Publisher's Summary

Jordan helps kids on the run find their way back home. He's good at that. He should be - he's a runaway himself. Sometimes he helps the kids in other stranger ways. He looks like a regular teenager, but he's not. He acts like he's not exactly human, but he is. He treads the line between mundane reality and the world of the supernatural.

Desdaemona also knows the nonhuman world far too well. She tracks Jordan down and enlists his aid in searching for her lost sister, Fay, who did a Very Bad Thing involving an immortal. This may be a mistake - for both of them. Too many people are interested now, and some of them are not people at all.

Ben Macallan's urban fantasy debut takes you on a terrifying journey, lifting the curtain on what really walks our city streets.

Clever story line

Story line is refreshing for this genre. Characters are complicated and broken which I like. Dark story line that doesn’t leave you feeling dark. Very enjoyable.

I highly recommend

It started off at a fast pace, but did a good job at developing the characters. It was a unique and interesting take on urban fantasy. The narrator made it feel as though you were living in the main character’s head.

Hard to follow

Unfortunately I can't really rate the book. The narration is so horrible I can't even pay attention to the storyline. The narrator muddles all the lines together, whether it be from different characters speaking or not. This makes it difficult to understand who is speaking what line. It sounds like he is speed reading. The only thing going for the narration is the nice accent. Glad this book was free.

Jordan

The story was basically a good story but I felt there was too much left out left unsaid. Jordan in particular, everything about him was eluded to, talked around; I felt most of the book was spend wondering when the characters would be explained. I still feel like I missed a large chunk of the story but it was not told. I will likely give the 2nd book a try to see if it fills in the missing pieces.
Also, the book is called Desdemona which she was part of the story but most of this story is about Jordan. He is the main character and story teller. So, I think it has the ability to be excellent but it needs more info more details. I am left thinking, it is over but I am missing so much!

Desdaemona

This is a most excellent story! Well written and well narrated. Suspicious of series where the 1st is free because there are usually like 5 to 8 more books, but glad I didn't pass this up. As with many books in this genre, there was no gratuitous sex scenes and no long drawn out plot. This is a well-crafted tale of life, which could be human or supernatural. Loved it and can't wait to listen to the next.

100% Not sure what other reviewers listened to.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The narrator did a fine job with the entire book in my opinion. Negative reviews about it not having a plot - what the... what are you listening to? This has a great story and a very good through line beginning to end.

The author doesn't hand hold you at all with the world building and characters and I legitimately couldn't have appreciated that more. Things are learned dynamically and in a way that makes sense for the characters. There's no "info dump" or expository mess. It was hours in before you get a real sense as to who is who and what is what I'm relation to them. Good writing.

There are multiple reviews that complained about sex or assault in the book - it's a horror novel (though personally I think it fits mystery just as well) and the MC is a 17 year old male with 17 year old hormones and the author doesn't spend time throwing anything at all in anyone's face. Instead, he writes about afterthoughts or experiences with in all honesty is very dialed back in terms of description. If you are looking for a book with more of that in it, you will in fact be very disappointed. As for assault - there are vampires, demons, and all other manners of characters in this book and they don't all get along. If you have sensitive sensibilities - maybe choose a different genre?

This was a great read. I finished it in less than a day and enjoyed it. Give it a shot. It's worth your time.

Awesome

Don’t write many reviews… and this is not my usual read. Loved the fast pace story and the narrators accent was awesome. Great read with minimal characters I hate all these books now with 100 main characters and names that all sound alike…. I will def get more from this author.

Seems like a good story

I can’t concentrate. It just feels like the narrator is talking to himself. Doesn’t even try to differentiate between characters. Guess I could just say it’s boring listening when doing anything like driving or anything else!

What a wonderful surprise

I chose this book in my includeds. I listened to the sample and wasn’t immediately drawn in. I am so glad I clicked play !
The narrator was really good. He really told the story well, putting real drama into his reading.
The story was slow but not boring. I was worried it would be a teenage type book because of the storyline but I’m 52 and I usually love disaster books and I really enjoyed it.
I’m going to look to see if there a book two and will buy it if I have to.
Some of the writing is really beautifully put , very descriptive and I really cared what happened .
Give it a go , it’s a hidden gem

Struggled

I feel bad saying this but I really struggled to finish this - found that sometimes the back and forth with characters hard to keep track of as the voices were exactly the same in the 2 main characters. I didn't really like either of the main characters either so weren't really routing for them in the end, especially with the turn of events close to the finish. It is an interesting world the writer has made, so potential but not for me I'm afraid!

Brilliant narrator! Blew me away.

What a fantastic narrator! His presentation was second to none and with such an engaging story to tell I was spellbound. Can't wait to listen to book 2.
