Story
A Lie Too Big to Fail asserts the idea that a government can never investigate itself in a crime of this magnitude. Was the convicted Sirhan Sirhan a willing participant? Or was he a mind-controlled assassin? It has fallen to independent researchers like Pease to lay out the evidence in a clear and concise manner, allowing listeners to form their theories about this event. Pease places the history of this event in the context of the era and provides shocking overlaps between other high-profile murders and attempted murders of the time.

It exposes the questionable origins of Reclaiming History in a dubious mock trial for cable television, in which Bugliosi played the role of an attorney prosecuting Lee Harvey Oswald for murder, and how this formed the basis for the epic tome.

Story
Almost 50 years after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, his murder continues to haunt the American psyche and stands as a turning point in our nation’s history. The Warren Commission rushed out its report in 1964, but questions continue to linger: Was there a conspiracy? Was there a coup at the highest levels of government? On March 1, 1967, New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison shocked the world by arresting local businessman Clay Shaw for conspiracy to murder the president.

At the height of the Cold War, JFK risked committing the greatest crime in human history: starting a nuclear war. Horrified by the specter of nuclear annihilation, Kennedy gradually turned away from his long-held Cold Warrior beliefs and toward a policy of lasting peace. But to the military and intelligence agencies in the United States, who were committed to winning the Cold War at any cost, Kennedy's change of heart was a direct threat to their power and influence.

Publisher's Summary
If you thought you already knew everything there was to know about the Kennedy assassination, think again.
If you enjoyed the chilling experience of In Cold Blood and were at the edge of your seat while watching Oliver Stone’s JFK, you’ll love this investigative look into all the facets of one of the top conspiracies of the 20th century and beyond. DiEugenio, who has spent decades researching the Kennedy assassination, takes both an analytical and conversational approach to his fascinating exploration of the pivotal historical events and scandals surrounding that day.
Twenty years after the first edition of Destiny Betrayed, DiEugenio is back with his ever-expanding investigation into the life and death of JFK. But this is no simple reissue. It is a greatly revised and expanded version of the original book, including updates on all the topics it introduced back in 1992. DiEugenio has used the declassification process of the Assassination Records Review Board (ARRB) to obtain the most current information on topics like the Garrison investigation and Clay Shaw; the newly exposed fallacies of the Warren Commission; U.S.-Cuban policy from 1957 to 1963; Kennedy's withdrawal plan from Vietnam; Kennedy's challenge to the Cold War consensus in 1961, and where those ideas originated; the ARRB medical inquiry demonstrating conspiracy and cover up; and the problems with the investigation of the Kennedy case. DiEugenio’s primary focus is on the Garrison inquiry, the New Orleans aspects of the Kennedy murder investigation, and the revelatory new information that bolsters Garrison’s case and has been withheld from the public.
All of this and more is contained in the narrative of this complex crime, with twin focuses on the victim, John F. Kennedy, and the investigator, Jim Garrison.

Essential Book but Narration Almost Ruins it
Would you listen to Destiny Betrayed, Second Edition again? Why?
No. This is a book I will go back to but I will read my paperback edition
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jim Garrison. An American hero. It's amazing how much his investigation uncovered and a tragedy that so many of his files have been destroyed or lost.
How could the performance have been better?
Let me count the ways. It almost seems like he is deliberately trying to sabotage Jim's terrific book. I don't know what kind of say Jim has in choosing narrators for his audio-books but I'm so glad he got someone else for "Reclaiming Parkland." I wish Jim had read this himself. First there are the mispronunciations. Then there are the impressions and accents. Every time there is a quote this guy does it in a highly distracting vocal impression. And they are just awful. Absolutely painful to listen to.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I almost gave up several times because of the narration.
Any additional comments?
This is the worst narrated book I have ever listened to. I have listened to hundreds of audio books and there have been some poor narrators along the way. The main problem usually is mispronunciations of names. But this guy Rohrer takes the cake! Maybe he does a good job with other books but he was a terrible choice for this one.

I'm trying so hard to listen
I don't know if I'll listen to this. The first JFK impersonation might have been tolerable if I'd never heard the actual man speak. But I did and, although he's giving a good effort, the dialogue by the different important people in the narrative is too distracting. Each rendition of JFK speaking is making me angrier at the disruption and it's impossible to listen to the story. A straight reading would have been much more enjoyable.

OMG, get someone else to narrate this.
What made the experience of listening to Destiny Betrayed, Second Edition the most enjoyable?
The content, very well laid out and considered.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Paul Neal Rohrer?
Anyone who does a better Kennedy impression than this guy, the really super awkward voices were jarring. For basic narration he was fine.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
23 hours is kind of long to listen to anything in one sitting :-)

What’s my motivation?
Good content, really worth while and informative. However, the narrator has obviously approached his task as if he were suffering from schizophrenia. The accents. The acting. The shame! The narrator’s performance compels me to laugh at various parts of this book which are not humorous.
Solely because of this bizarre performance (and certainly not the content), the performance should be called, “The Muppets Solve The Assassination”

The impersonations!!!!!!
I enjoy Jim DiEugenio’s work and having read this book I went into listening to the audiobook with some excitement... the reading is pretty good until you hit the impersonations of JFK, Johnson, Nixon and others. Holy moly! In my opinion the impersonations are just not in tune with the character of the text.
Anyhow, Destiny Betrayed is an important book and I would recommend reading it. If you don’t have time for that, go ahead and listen but prepare yourself for a horrendous Kennedy imitation to appear here and there.

Interesting but distracting
I've read quite a few books on the assassination of JFK and this book was able to provide information that I have never come across before.
It is a very in depth look at what happened and gives a tonne of background information.
The only downside is the narrators insistence on doing over the top impressions when reading quotes (especially those of JFK, Nixon and worst of all Martina Oswald), this makes it very distracting and completely pulls your attention away from the facts being presented.

Why oh why?
Am a total Kennedy nut and have read/listened to a large number of them. This one looked really good as it goes back to the formation of the CIA after ww2, it's development and spheres of influence before even starting on JFK. THEN WHY FOR GODS SAKE LET THE NARRATOR ATTEMPT IMPERSONATIONS OF ALL CHARACTERS? It totally makes the book ridiculous and I gave up after chapter 4. It wouldn't be so bad if he was any good but he is rubbish. Not impressed and very let down.

JFK Story Reveiled
What did you like most about Destiny Betrayed, Second Edition?
Stunning insight into the background of the JFK story from Cuba to Assassination. Truly enlightening, and much of the Jim Garrison enquiry is brought to the fore and explained why deliberate attempts to undermine his case was instigated. No attempt to force you to accept the evidence, but what is written is quite compelling. 5star+
What other book might you compare Destiny Betrayed, Second Edition to, and why?
Several, but the JFK books all have their own angle, and I have read or listened to quite a number from both sides of the argument. This book however sets out the Garrison vs Warren Commission Investigations in its true colours.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The were so many moments within the book that raised my eyebrow, and facts that I had not been made aware of prior to listening to this audio book; and the fact that newly uncovered material played a part in proving Garrison's case is eye-opening.
Any additional comments?
Superb book. Narration a little off when accents of people are attempted; but thankfully it is the material and subject that holds the readers ear.
