Story
A vacation out of the city sounds like just the ticket for Tori Hunter and Sam Kennedy. Joining their Dallas Police Department pals Casey O'Connor and Leslie Tucker in a rented RV, they set out for the New Mexico mountains - and on a collision course with a manhunt. FBI agents Cameron Ross and Andrea Sullivan are tracking a deadly quarry in desolate territory. Story
FBI Agents Cameron Ross and Andrea Sullivan found the unexpected when they met amongst the warm red rocks and cliffs of Sedona - each other. That commitment, along with their ingenuity, courage and resolve, will be tested along the most barren of stretches in California's Mojave Desert. Someone is using the bleak highways to dump women's bodies, but in a landscape where an inviting road can curve into a sand-choked mirage, and a true oasis can be invisible under a white-hot sun, clues can blow away in the wind.

Story
Twenty-three years ago, a young girl went missing. Two days later her body was found lodged beneath the footbridge over Boulder Creek. The murder shook the town but they soon found it was only the beginning. A serial killer hides among them - a serial killer who strikes twice, sometimes three times a year. Mason Cooper couldn’t wait to leave Gillette Park. At 18, she headed off to college and the bright lights of Los Angeles, thinking she'd never return home to the broken family and forgotten friendships she'd left behind.

While the investigations go on in Dallas and Baton Rouge after the disappearance of a senator's daughter, FBI agents CJ Johnston and Paige Riley are assigned to the sleepy backwoods of East Texas for a dead-end assignment to infiltrate an all-girls school. Random disappearances dating back 50 years and more raise red flags that point to the tiny, isolated community of Hoganville. But CJ and Paige fear there will be little distraction from the memories of the one-night stand they shared six months ago.

Publisher's Summary
Two women vow to bring a killer to justice. Deputy Andrea Sullivan had hoped to leave the horrors of Los Angeles behind her, but the serial murders of college students in peaceful, picturesque Sedona are her nightmare case to solve. The complexities stretch local resources to the limit, and the FBI joins the case with Agent Cameron Ross in the lead.
The crime scenes are covered with the trademark signs of the fiendish Patrick Doe, whose handiwork has been investigated by Dallas detective Tori Hunter and others. But where Hunter failed Cameron intends to win. She will break the case, find justice and go home. No distractions. Unfortunately, Deputy Sullivan is very distracting. And Patrick Doe has other plans.

Engrossing
This is a new author for me. I noted she has created a story of strong female characters. Andrea Sullivan once was a Los Angeles police officer. She moved to Sedona, Arizona and went to work as a deputy sheriff. Then serial murders of college students occur. The FBI send in Agent Cameron Ross to lead the investigation.
The book is well written and fast paced. I picked up the book to read because the story was taking place in Sedona. I am very tired of serial killers and wish authors would give the topic a rest for a while. The plot twists and turns and the characters are interesting. The descriptions of scenic Sedona are great. I was disappointed that the two lead women had a lot of personal baggage, but that did not interfere with their excellent job performance. I wish an author would write about a hero who is emotionally healthy, brilliant and superb at their jobs. The book provides a good “who done it” story; but most likely I will not bother to read this author again.
The book is about 8 hours long. Abby Craden does a good job narrating the book. She is a new narrator for me. Craden is an actor, voice over artist and award winning audiobook narrator.

I Was Totally Into It
I didn't really care that much for 'Angel Fire' so I was a little leery about this one. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that I liked this work by the author much more than I did my introduction to these characters. To me Angel Fire came across as contrived but this selection had a story that seemed to flow naturally. I also liked the relationship between Andi and the sheriff; the author referred to this as a father/ daughter relationship and it 'read' that way. The who in the 'whodunit' is revealed fairly early in the narrative so there is no tension in that regard. The biggest flaw in this story; and it probably seems like a minor point to most people is the manner in which Andi reacted to Cameron's injuries after her flying leap off the cliff. Cameron had injured her ankle and Andi, an ex-LA officer and detective can't cease asking her if her ankle is okay, if she can walk on it; as if there's another option. The two of them are miles off any trail, without any other means of transportation there is nothing else to do but walk. This was after Cameron had shown her the numerous scars criss-crossing her torso, then she's worried about that a Special Ops warrior can be brought down by a sprained ankle. Cameron's ripping off her shirt to display those scars was far too melodramatic, but these are minor points I loved the book.

Not my favorite
I usually love Gerri Hill novels, but this story felt really rushed. I wanted to care about the characters, but their dialog seemed unrealistic and their back stories shallow. Even the action and love scenes bordered on boring and predictable. Abby Craden's narration was wonderful, however. She's my favorite narrator of Hill novels.
I suppose this happens sometimes when an author's works set the bar high. They can't all be winners, but I will continue to be a fan of Hill and look forward to reading more of her work. If this is your first read from her, and you thought it was lackluster, just know that she has plenty of other gems.

Love this story
Would you consider the audio edition of Devil’s Rock to be better than the print version?
Yes & no. I love to read myself but due to my disability I have to listen to audiobooks sometimes. I personally prefer to read a book and use my imagination. However I really did love this book in audio. In fact it is one of my new favourites. So I can't really say if it's better or not as i will both read the book and listen to it again & again.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The first time I read it, yes. However because I have read it more than once I knew what was going to happen. I believe if you haven't heard the story before then yes it will intrigue you.
Have you listened to any of Abby Craden’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. I have quite a few books read by Abby Crayden and I LOVE her voice. This has to be one of my favourite books that she has performed. She really brought this story to life and I love the voices she gave the two main characters. All the secondary characters had their own voices too so you knew who was speaking. I could probably listen to her read the dictionary and be happy, although I am glad that she has much better options.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes, the bit where Cameron was really emotional and was telling Andi about her family. And the bit where Andi found out that Cameron had read files about her past.
Any additional comments?
I love this story and am a big fan of Gerri Hills work. I have read all her books and I hope that the rest will be released on audible in the near future. Gerri Hill is a talented writer and this is one of my favourite romance/intrigue stories by her. While I prefer plain romances normally I do enjoy Gerri's intrigue books. Hunters Way will be released soon and that is a must read/listen.
Abby Crayden does an amazing job with this book and really brings the characters to life.

Loved the Heck out of this book, my favorite from Gerri this far
I loved the bouncing from one character to the other with each chapter allowing readers to know what each was thinking! This book was suspenseful surrounding the case, the characters were so deep and hurt from their past, they helped heal each others hearts and (predictable spoiler) witnessing them fall in love was so emotional and pure.

Romance and crime, it works.
First to say I think, Abby Craden did an amazing job with this one, her performance is excellent. She does a great at making the two main characters different and fit their personalities.
The story introduces the two characters, Ross, ex-special-ops, Andy, ex LAPD. They meet and work a case in the mountains and fall in love.
The reason for not five stars, was that I found some elements of the story over the top, around Ross, her role, her background as well as that of Andy's. But that could just be me. It's a nice listen, and the romance parts are done very well. I liked that fact that the forceful Ross was quick to accept her affection for Andy, and act on it. I also liked how confident her character was, and in control/experienced. It was also nice that her character on the whole seemed compassionate, rather then aggressive. It made a nice difference. And matched how she reacted to assisting Andy with her guilt.

Loved it
I'm surprised I liked this book so much. The crime element was very much secondary to the love story. The love story was pretty cliched: 2 damaged women finding healing through each other. ..... I could go on but I won't because despite the flaws the book was engagingly written, the characters were mostly believable, especially Lola who steals the show and the narration was really, really good. I was very entertained and will certainly read more by the author. Usually when I give 5 stars it's because a book is tightly written, unpredictable, and multifaceted, this book isn't but at the end I felt warm and happy and that is also, I think, a sign of a good read. Entertainment with the feel good factor. Must say I will look for other books read by Ms Craden too.

A real dose of a cocky FBI agent.
Really enjoyed this. I know there were lots of dead bodies and I think there might have been too many but it did not stifle the story. The character of the FBI agent has been through the mill but I suppose that added to the depth of her anguish at times and her gung-ho nature.

Heart racing story from serial killers to new love
Gerri Hill does this storyline proud. Im loving this series and i know there are a few still in production as there are ones we are currently missing on Audible (as of Apr16). Hopefully soon we will have the full series and I can listen to them all again - in sequence. Strong believable characters and girls that will melt your heart as they grow ever closer. Cameron had me the moment she adopted the cat.
Narrator is Abby Crayden. There is no better so it is always 10/10.

Enjoyed this book from start to finish
I was sceptical when I first started listening. It’s hard to find good books written by queer women for queer women but this book exceeded my expectations.
Deep characters and a well thought out plot and a lesbian romance sprinkled it. It was just cliche enough.
