Critic Reviews

"Devotion is utterly original. A glorious, heartbreaking love story of infinite beauty." (Heather Rose)

"Hannah Kent's latest novel is stunning—full of magic and adventure. I fell in love with language again reading it. So beautiful and so raw. Devotion is impossibly good." (Evie Wyld)

"Such a glorious love story. And the poetry of the landscape had, for me, a Whitmanesque sensibility. A mighty impassioned cry to love and the land." (Sarah Winman)

Hannah Kent is a poetic novelist

Hannah Kent’s writing is so beautiful it sings as you read it. She is a true master of her craft, and her research is second to none.

This audiobook, however was spoiled by the narrator, Emily Wheaton, who did *NOT* do her research, and couldn’t even pronounce the main character’s name correctly! Her name is “HAHNNA” , not ‘Honey’

Hannah Kent should be devastated to hear the butchering of the pronunciation of her beautiful prose. Particularly the name of the main Character, Hanne (HAHNNA)!!! Whom I heard heard her speaking fondly of when being interviewed by Richard Fidler. I wonder if she didn’t kick herself for not recording the book herself. She has a beautiful voice, and none of her word choices would’ve been butchered by someone who didn’t take the time to look up how an unfamiliar word is pronounced!

My neighbours must’ve been sick of me yelling “GUNNELL” each time the narrator said, ‘Gunwhale’ for “gunwale”!

It’s another amazing “Must Read” book from Hannah Kent, but I’d truly suggest the hard copy…

A highly recommended novel ruined by the narration

I was looking forward to this highly talked about in a large FB book club, yet could barely finish a page on Audible on account of the breathy, over dramatised female voice. The voice ruined the ability to listen without coercion to buy into the dreamy, wistful, yearning ridiculous voice. Don’t do this audible!

A book of poetry, Insights into Australia’s past

Such a descriptive and emotional story. A love as deep as the ocean propels this novel into a world unto itself.

Must Read/Listen

Absolutely loved it. I'm not a fan of stories set back in time. I don't know why? I don't even like old movies, so I was a bit sceptical about having to read this for book club. I work alot so listening to books in the car while driving between jobs is my best bet. I listened to this in 2 days I was so hooked. I never wanted it to end!

Beautiful

This book was just beautiful, the imagery, the poetry and more was such a beautiful read. The story was fantastic and didn't go where I thought it was and how it turned half way was so creative and perfect. Highly recommend this book

Historical Drama

An engaging read with a completely unexpected twist. An insightful perspective from the protagonist. I would choose this author again.

Became a bit wishy-washy for me

Followed the story along for first 2/3's of book but after twist in character's circumstances I struggled to continue. Seemed very promising book until then. Not sure I'd recommend it.

Mystical

I devoured this story but Hannah Kent never disappoints. The research she puts into her work is unfailing and always helps to create stories that sweep the reader up and totally immerse us in the culture and world of her novel. Cultures wo which we may neither otherwise become aware of. Devotion did not disappoint. I found it mysterious, ethereal, so moving and although I didn't want it to end, I couldn't wait to hear what would happy next!
