Story
When street musician James Bowen found an injured cat curled up in the hallway of his apartment building, he had no idea how much his life was about to change. James was living hand to mouth on the streets of London, barely making enough money to feed himself - the last thing he needed was a pet. Yet, James couldn't resist helping the strikingly intelligent, but very sick animal, whom he named Bob. He slowly nursed Bob back to health and then sent the cat on his way, never imagining that he would see him again. But Bob had other ideas.

Helen's heart melted as Sam held one of the kittens in his hands with a look of total adoration. In a trice the deal was done - the kitten would be delivered to them when she was big enough to leave her mother. A week later, the family suffered a terrible tragedy. Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Sweet Story!

Publisher's Summary
Dewey's story starts in the worst possible way. Only a few weeks old, on the coldest night of the year, he was stuffed into the returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by library director, Vicki Myron, a single mother who had survived the loss of her family farm, a breast cancer scare, and an alcoholic husband. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of them in a gesture of thanks and love. For the next 19 years, he never stopped charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility (for a cat), and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most.

Heart touching story
Where does Dewey rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
1
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dewey?
The death scene when Dewey's eyes faded
Which character – as performed by Susan McInerny – was your favorite?
Dewey
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I liked the Dewey shoulder carry and also the extreme loss experienced when he died
Any additional comments?
I lost a red long haired cat many years ago, like Dewey he waited for me before he died, his name was Red and he was only 5 pounds full grown and his place was on my left shoulder to avoid our-racing adopted ex greyhounds who viewed him as prey. One day I came home from work and found Red frozen on the floor mat in front of the kitchen sink. His rear end was balded. Our black greyhound, Charlie, had pulled all of Red's hair from his rear and Red never moved. After that we kept Charlie away from Red. Red purred loudly continually and slept on top of me every night. Even though it has been years since death I still can imagine him purring in my ear and the little warm lump sleeping on my waist at night. I loved that cat. The death scene with Dewey was so real to me. I cried for about an hour. No book has ever had that effect on my emotions. This is the best book ever. An addendum to Dewey is the life of the librarian who loved him. The town of Spencer is portrayed from the eyes of long time residents so I came away from the book with the feel of how it must have felt to have lived there for thirty years. BEST READ EVER

I'm not even a cat person!
I LOVED this book. I laughed, I cried, and I liked a CAT. I'm not a cat person, but Dewey is more than a cat . . . he's a person in cat fur. The story is about an entire town and I fell in love with not only the town, but its inhabitants. A beautiful, simple story of how an animal can galvanize people and make a difference in the world.

Dewey will forever live in your heart!
The story of Dewey's life will captivate you and warm your heart. It is amazing how this little fluffy orange kitten changed people's lives and a town's heart. The story lavishes the reader with irresistible tales of Dewey's antics and brings you from laughter to tears. The author also takes time to give you some background information about the town, it's history and it's destination. The only fault i give to this book is the somewhat indulgent time spent in the local and familial histories. Some of the information is important to understand the role Dewey played - but the rest of it could have been left out without damaging the story. More Dewey stories could have taken up that time. But all in all I really enjoyed my time with Dewey and his family. He will always live in my heart.

Good Story
If you could sum up Dewey in three words, what would they be?
Very Cute Story. A little too detailed but over all good plot.
What other book might you compare Dewey to and why?
None
Have you listened to any of Susan McInerny’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, First one
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
NO
Any additional comments?
Too many minute details. A little dragging.

Dew-opoly
Besides our beloved Orange Mackerel Tabby domesticated house cat that could easily pass as a direct descendant of the "Dew", The Dew has become our most loved pet that was never known. Definitely a "tail" for any cat-lover. Vicki quite quickly and with enough detail to make you think you were living in the moment with her sets up the scenes and provides effective background, surrounding and necessary details without overly decorative language or minutiae while keeping pace of the story well maintained with the reader wanting more and more. Being as much about Dew as possible, Vicki could not help but to spill her life into the leaves of the story; however, it was more that Dew taught her about living and being satisfied in self than not and trying to attain status inconsequential to need. Easily one of my favorite non-fiction reads as the personal stories, the socio-political settings and happenings, and the triumphs, tribulations, and losses all resound in the soul with the yearning to just do the right thing, to take care of this world if even all that amounts to is taking care of one frozen kitten.
Susan McInerny will be on my watch list of narrators as she brought this story to life in a way that I have not had the previous pleasure.

Amazing, Heartwarming, & Purrfect for the soul
Dewey is one of the best books that I have ever read. The author, Vicki Myron, did an amazing job at capturing the legendary Dewey’s life, the people he touched and the small town with a big heart that he was from. I haven’t read a book in awhile that had me laughing as much as I did with each Dewey story. This book also made me cry during the heartfelt moments both happy and sad. The words are so beautifully painted to create such vivid imagery, leaving nothing to the imagination. It is a beautiful book that was also very well read. The performance of the reader kept my attention and read each moment the way I’m sure the author would have. This is the perfect book for anyone at any age! I am a 29 year old law student who loved it!

Touching and heartbreaking
As a transplanted Midwesterner, I was particularly moved by the story of Spencer. I've also felt the same love for a pet. The story of Dewey is the story of many pets and their owners. It's universal. Art has the power to change lifes and this book has that power. It has made me search my soul for answers in my own life. I'm so happy Vicki wrote it.
