Publisher's Summary

Informative contribution to European history

This book covers a lot of territory--from growing up in the Austrian Empire in the 1890s as the privileged child of a well-to-do Jewish family in Vienna, only to see that world disappear in a series of monumentally stupid political catastrophes (First World War, inflation, advent of Nazism and state-sponsored anti-Semitism, German attack on Poland in 1939). Zweig writes not as a professional historian, but as a private individual who happened to particularly well situated to be an observer and lived through these events.

Grandios
