Story
Doug Stanhope has been drunkenly stumbling down the back roads and dark alleys of stand-up comedy for over a quarter of a century, roads laden with dank bars, prostitutes, cheap drugs, farm animals, evil dwarfs, public nudity, menacing third-world police, psychotic breaks, sex offenders, and some understandable suicides. You know, just for levity. While other comedians were seeking fame, Stanhope was seeking immediate gratification, dark spectacle, or sometimes just his pants.

Story
Misanthrope. Iconoclast. Apostate. Drunk. Many words have been used to describe Doug Stanhope, but rarely has “hopeful” been one of them. However, heading into 2016, Stanhope peered through the apocalyptic fog and saw a forecast that was more rainbows than acid rain: His first book was set for release, his new stand-up special was in the can, and he was about to film a television pilot with his friend and confidant Johnny Depp. The only thing that could stop Doug was himself, and that’s exactly what he did.

Tom Segura is known for his twisted takes and irreverent comedic voice. But after a few years of crazy tours and churning out podcasts weekly, all while parenting two young children, he desperately needs a second to himself. It’s not that he hates his friends and family—he’s not a monster—he’s just beat. In this collection of stories, Tom combines his signature curmudgeonly humor with a revealing look at some of the ridiculous situations that shaped him and the ludicrous characters who always seem to seek him out.

A collection of outrageous stories by the stand-up comic, TV host, and inspiration for the movie National Lampoon's Van Wilder. Bert Kreischer doesn't know how to say "no". If he did, he wouldn't have gotten himself mixed up with a group of Russian mobsters on a class trip to Moscow, earning him his nickname "The Machine". He wouldn't have wrestled with a bear or swum with sharks on national television. He wouldn't have (possibly) smoked PCP with a star of Saturday Night Live.

As this book's title suggests, Norm Macdonald tells the story of his life - more or less - from his origins on a farm in the-back-of-beyond Canada and an epically disastrous appearance on Star Search to his account of auditioning for Lorne Michaels and his memorable run as the anchor of Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live - until he was fired because a corporate executive didn't think he was funny. Debauched, divorced, and courting death, Billy Ray Schafer is a comedian who has forgotten how to laugh. Over the course of seven spun-out days across the American Southwest, he travels from from hell gig to hell gig in search of a reason to keep living in this bleak and violent glimpse into the psyche of a thoroughly ruined man. Ex-inmate, ex-husband, ex-father - comedian is the only title Schafer has left. Trapped in the wreckage of his wasted career, Billy Ray knows the answer to the question: What happens when the opportunity doesn't come - or worse - it comes and goes?

Fame can be addictive. From his early days videotaping crazy skateboard stunts to starring in the blockbuster Jackass franchise, there was little that Stephen “Steve-O” Glover wouldn’t do for attention. Whether it was stapling his nutsack to his leg, diving into a pool full of elephant crap, or routinely risking death invading the private lives of sharks, lions, tigers, and bears, almost nothing was out of bounds. And as the stunts got crazier, his life kept pace.

Bob Odenkirk’s career is inexplicable. And yet he will try like hell to explicate it for you. Charting a “Homeric” decades-long “odyssey” from his origins in the seedy comedy clubs of Chicago to a dramatic career full of award nominations - with a side trip into the action-man world that is baffling to all who know him - it’s almost like there are many Bob Odenkirks! In April of 2004, the long downward spiraling of Amy Bingaman's mental illness could no longer be hidden or ignored much less written off as a side-product of a colorful and quirky character. With no family able to help and no resources, she was involuntarily locked up in the draconian, archaic labyrinth that is the Wyoming Mental Health System. Armed with only a pocket dictionary and any paper she could find to write on, Amy wrote not only as a journal but at times as her only coping mechanism to salvage what was left of a breaking mind in a love/hate relationship with her alter-ego.

Story
Marc Maron was a parent-scarred, angst-filled, drug-dabbling, love-starved comedian who dreamed of a simple life: a wife, a home, a sitcom to call his own. But instead he woke up one day to find himself fired from his radio job, surrounded by feral cats, and emotionally and financially annihilated by a divorce from a woman he thought he loved. He tried to heal his broken heart through whatever means he could find - minor-league hoarding, Viagra addiction, accidental racial profiling, cat fancying, flying airplanes with his mind - but nothing seemed to work. It was only when he was stripped down to nothing that he found his way back.

Sixx Review

By: Nikki Sixx
Publisher's Summary
Doug Stanhope is one of the most critically acclaimed and stridently unrepentant comedians of his generation. What will surprise some is that he owes so much of his dark and sometimes uncomfortably honest sense of humor to his mother, Bonnie. It was the cartoons in HER Hustler magazine issues that molded the beginnings of his comedic journey, long before he was old enough to know what to do with the actual pornography. It was Bonnie who recited Monty Python sketches with him, who introduced him to Richard Pryor at nine years old, and who rescued him from a psychologist when he brought that brand of humor to school. And it was Bonnie who took him along to all of her AA meetings, where Doug undoubtedly found inspiration for his own storytelling.
Bonnie's own journey from bartending to truck driving, massage therapy, elder abuse, and stand-up comedy and acting never stopped her from being Doug's genuine number one fan. So when Bonnie's alcoholic, hoarding life finally came to an end so many weird adventures later in rural Arizona, it was inevitable that Doug and Bonnie would be together for one last journey.
Digging Up Mother follows Doug's absurd, chaotic, and often obscene life as it intersects with that of his best friend, his biggest fan, and the love of his life: his mother, Bonnie. And it all starts with her death - one of the most memorable and amazing farewells you will ever hear.
BONUS: As fans of his stand-up and listeners of his podcast will attest, Doug is not a "by-the-book" type of guy. This audiobook is no exception. In what he refers to as the "director's cut commentary," Doug forgoes the confines of a straight-read and creates a truly unique listening experience, going off-script to riff throughout its sections and bringing in a cast of colorful characters – childhood friends, his podcast co-host, and fellow comedians and musicians – to voice letters from teachers and guidance counselors, diary entries from his mother, and even old homework assignments. Additionally, Doug has several of the folks mentioned in the book expound on and give their version of events and stories, often remembered quite differently. The result is a wildly fun audiobook that's as distinct as the comedian's own brand of humor.
A special note from the author:
Good news for all my blind and/or illiterate fans! The audio version of my book Digging Up Mother is now available on Audible!
It's read podcast-style by myself and the golden-throated Chad Shank and features guest performances from those who appeared in the book, dropping in to share their own blurred memories of our sloppy pasts and ugliest stories. Guests include my childhood delinquent partner in crime Chris O'Conner, and Greg Chaille, Bingo, Mat Becker, Sarah Hyland (now Sarah HylanDER) and more.

Exactly what I hoped for!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Highly recommended to friends that truly understand "humor, tragedy, and love" rolled up into a spitball.
Who was your favorite character and why?
All characters involved were my favorites.
Have you listened to any of Doug Stanhope and Friends’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I like all of his material. He stands out like a hammered thumb.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Nothing "par-tic-u-lar-ly" moved me. All of it moved me.
Any additional comments?
I listened to "Diggin Up Mother" in two days. Doug is a weed in the rose garden. He has survived pesticide sprays, droughts, and floods. One doesn't have to be pretty to survive and thrive. I want to shake his hand and say, "I understand." I will listen to it again to pick up on subtleties I may have missed.

Doug Stanhope, with a little help from his friends, brings new insights and emotions into this already astounding story of love. However, the breakout performance, and the real reason to buy this book is the sultry tones of the one and only, Chad Shank. His voice is guaranteed to make you moist(especially you, fella), even in the saddest of moments.

Digging up Doug Stanhope
I usually will read anything except gruesome hurting. This book beat me. I choose to not finish it. Bought as comedy it isn’t. I found the JR high school humor and escapades boring and good for nothing. It is all shock value and it doesn’t progress from there. Wish I knew how to return for credit. I find the book to be nonredeemable. Save ur time n money. Don’t bother trying to read. M

What a great book. I had to turn it off multiple times so I wouldn't erupt into psychotic level laughter in my cubicle. It also genuinely brought tears to my eyes a couple times and caused me to reflect on my own life in a fresh way. A beautiful love story. hopefully responsible for a paradigm shift in how audiobooks are performed
I read this book in analog form and now hope that more people follow Doug Stanhope's example by doing an audiobook that's more a director's cut than merely the author or a stand in reading.
Hearing and in an odd way meeting the people in his stories was fascinating.
The golden pipes of Chad Shank should soon be all over audible as well.

Not my thing.
I tried to like this guy and thought the bit about his mother dying was a sweet, if not exactly conventional story. But then he lost me. The stories of him growing up as a miscreant and a bully, all the while trying to sell it as “creativity” was preposterous. The truth is that he was a disturbed kid with a pretty sketchy childhood. That he was able to turn it into a career as a comedian and not a serial killer is commendable. However, I don’t think his brand of humor is particularly funny. I’ll admit I only managed to get about two hours in before I couldn’t take it any more. Maybe he turns it all around in the end. But I doubt it.

Surprising results
Any additional comments?
I listened to this earbook on an crowded, busy, loud, foul-smelling overnight sleeper train in China. It made the journey much more bearable, which made me much less keen on the idea of suicide. I think this is ironic, given Doug's personal beliefs and the contents of this book, because I don't know what irony is. One part made me laugh so hard, I accidentally knocked a chicken burger off my bunk and onto the head of the guy below me. He was a Muslim, and I'm pretty sure the burger wasn't halal. I tried to apologise profusely, but as we didn't share a language I can only be so certain that he understood.

Doug and mother
I listened to the final installments this morning as I lay awake in a hospital bed. It was an emotional experience. I am an avid fan of Doug's podcast and am used to his bleak no holds barred approach to comedy and life in general. This was that normal full frontal attack on your sensibilities plus the tender underbelly of a man who had a truly loving and understanding relationship with his mother. Read this book or better still listen to Doug, Chad and co. Reading and chatting in between.

The greatest story ever told.
Tragic, funny, sickening and beautiful.
This is, without doubt, the most open, human and graphically honest, celebrity autobiography that will ever be written. Even if the author misremembered and stumbled through the entire book. His friends were there to help him along.
It somehow manages to stay laugh-out-loud-funny, poignant and interest all at once.

Audiobook as concept album.
Best innovative use of the audiobook media format ever. Admirably honest, eloquent and funny AF.

Solid book
Well worth the time and money. It is more of an extended podcast than an audio book

Did not like this book.
I knew nothing of Doug Stanhope or any of his friends or his mother. When he is talking to his friends it is stilted, embarrassing...definitely not my sort of book, which is a shame, as I was looking forward to some comedy and hearing about his tale of his relationship with his mother.

The most entertaining audiobook available.
This book is beautifully deranged. It's a highlight reel detailing the life of a man who, for better or for worse, didn't let the millstone of life grind him into a normal, functioning, member of society. Far from it. His reluctance to conform has led him into some crazy, messed up but hilarious scenarios where, if you could play the same events back again, nine times out of ten he'd be dead or in jail.
This dude is a stuntman, hurling himself off the mountain of existence without a parachute, ricocheting off boulder and rock but always getting himself up, dusting himself off and going again - once more into the breach.
Never in my life would I ever have thought that I'd be envious of man who was pissed on by a Mexican gangbanger but, as I sit here listening to this book, my small office cubicle seems a little more monotoned, my colleagues seem a little more vanilla and my life seems a little less lived.
Don't mistake this review for fan w*nk. I consider myself to be quite a dark humoured kind of guy but, at certain points in this book, even I was drying my teeth to chalk.
Whether you're offended, entertained, or horrified by the antics documented (admittedly loosely) in this book, you'll have to concede that it's one hell of a ride.

The best audiobook I've ever listened to.
I just loved this from the get-go. Funny, emotional, disgusting and honest - everything I love in a book! Stanhope' narration is hilarious, and the additional riffs are an excellent touch. Listen to this at once!

Shock and aww
Disclaimer: I'd already read "Digging Up Mother" and passed it on to my millennial son who, although possesses an aversion to paper, has nearly finished reading it. If this is the first or only actual "book" he reads, I expect my contribution to humanity to at least get one tick on the right side of literature. Yeah, you read me Poindexter.
As for the Audible version?
It's more of the same. In the best possible way.
It's the same raw/raucous story telling typical of Stanhope's stand-up, rolled into a tale that drips off the page like the sloppy wisdom of ancient drunks, capped with a satisfying whiff of middle-age reflection. But now with extra added reflection! As supplied by people-that-were-actually-there first hand accounts, a voiceover cast worthy of whatever accolades there are for such things, all strung out and together by an increasingly and appropriately inebriated Stanhope.
Chad Shank excels at co-narrating the story, his rich timbre perfectly suited for an audiobook format and no doubt a sirens' song for Killer Termites.
You may get a little teary-eyed, unless you're dead inside - but either way you will be entertained. Hand the man his freedom.

I found this book completely disgusting.
Just when you thought you'd found an unsurpassable curmudgeon, Doug ruins it with a nuanced, beautiful and complex take on the human spirit.
Gross.

Stanhope, bloody Stanhope
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
A long time coming, of course I'd recommend Digging Up Mother to a friend! Everyone should read this book, it should be in Universities across the world and worshiped as point of study for centuries to come.
Who was your favorite character and why?
That Stanhope guy, he was alright.
Have you listened to any of Doug Stanhope and Friends’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I think I've listened or seen every recording available (probably many Doug wishes weren't available), this is Doug more refined, more concentrated and obviously performed with a more collaborative approach from his standup material.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It both horrified and sexual aroused me, I'm not sure in which order that happened.

Better than a Movie!
This was an amazing story about Doug Stanhope's life.
Not only did he read the book with a life long friend but he has a discussion with friends and people that were involved at the end of each or most chapters, making a perfect blend of story and podcast.
I will definately re listen to this!

ladies and gentleman mr doug stanhope.
I've laughed at dougs comedy since i stumbled across his videos in 2015. I lost my mother two years ago and wanted to read "digging up mother" to hear dougs perspective and aid in my own personal grief but never found the time. thanks to lockdown restrictions ive finally had my chace (the only silver lining to this madness) i laughed and cried at the similarities with my own relationship with my mum. if you're a fan of Doug you'll love his naration, guest readers and abrupt directors cuts. loved it
