Publisher's Summary

Paige Winterbourne was always either too young or too rebellious to succeed her mother as leader of one of the world's most powerful elite organizations - the American Coven of Witches. Now that she is 23 and her mother is dead, the Elders can no longer deny her. But even Paige's wildest antics can't hold a candle to those of her new charge - an orphan who is all too willing to use her budding powers for evil...and evil is all too willing to claim her.

For this girl is being pursued by a dark faction of the supernatural underworld. They are a vicious group who will do anything to woo the young, malleable, and extremely powerful neophyte, including commit murder - and frame Paige for the crime. It's an initiation into adulthood, womanhood, and the brutal side of magic that Paige will have to do everything within her power to survive.

Critic Reviews

"As in Armstrong's debut novel Bitten, this story's special strength lies in its seamless incorporation of the supernatural into the real world." ( Publishers Weekly)

✫✫ 4.5 Stars ✫✫

This series is a favorite of mine and this is probably my 3rd or 4th time listening to the entire series. I loved the Paige, Lucas and Savannah story line. Paige and Lucas really go great together, I love how they work together and how he brings a little reality back into Paige’s life when she’s freaking out. I love all the new magical things introduced in each book, this one has a necromancer added for a great scene. As with each time I’ve listened to this book, I was enthralled from the very beginning. I did want to smack Savannah a few time for being a brat but I just reminded myself she is a teenager.

The narration is not my favorite. I think she sounds too old for the characters. This doesn’t ruin the audiobook for me, I get used to her every time :)

Not the best

Love the Kelley Armstrong series, however this was a little lame. I am hoping that the rest of the series is not a dime store series.

Ok story telling. Performance lacking.

I've read this story before. A decent early work for the author. But the narrator was lacking. Mispronounced words were the worst. She pronounced forte like FORT not once but twice. The whole thing came off as less than professional.

Interesting Series

First read this book years ago thru my library & got interested enough in Armstrong's Otherworld that I read the others in the series. I've been more interested in Paige & Lucas than Elena & Clay, on the whole. But, in listening to this story today, there were several times "Harvard" Paige was just TSTL and her intelligence did not shine through. I like Merlington as a narrator on the whole, but this recording is not a standout.

Don't Waste Your Credits(or money) on This Book

Would you try another book from Kelley Armstrong and/or Laural Merlington?

I don't know? I've liked a couple of her books, but this book was such a huge disapointment that I don't know if I want to waste more time and energy on a bad book.

What didn’t you like about Laural Merlington’s performance?

She made the book boring.

Any additional comments?

You need a better narrator for your books.

But I Like Paige

Paige was a multiple personality. First a strong caring decisive person. Second a dim whit too stupid to live. Each aberration had a preliminary "But I just couldn't" whatever; run into a burning building, try to stop the wind blowing, make it rain upside down; whatever. Always something incredibly stupid to do but she couldn't control herself. "But I just couldn't!"

The author is a favorite and I would buy this audio book again. The paper version is in my library. Not sure why Paige was so much a double personality here. She is much more impressive in INDUSTRIAL MAGIC.

Second time better than the first

Watching the BITTEN series has lead me to listen to the Outer World Series again. Kelly Armstrong is one of my favorite authors and I love theses books. The performances are mostly excellent.
