Tom Reynolds, now chief superintendent, is no longer head of the murder squad. But when it transpires the woman escaped from a house fire started deliberately and that there are more victims, including a baby, Tom is sucked in. What begins as a straightforward case of arson, soon becomes something much more sinister. The people in that house never wanted to be there in the first place. Now more of them are missing.

The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

Publisher's Summary
From the best-selling author of The Perfect Lie.
In the exclusive gated community of Withered Vale, people's lives appear as perfect as their beautifully manicured lawns. Money, success, privilege - the residents have it all. Life is good.
There's just one problem.
Olive Collins's dead body has been rotting inside number four for the last three months. Her neighbours say they're shocked at the discovery but nobody thought to check on her when she vanished from sight.
The police start to ask questions and the seemingly flawless facade begins to crack. Because, when it comes to Olive's neighbours, it seems each of them has something to hide, something to lose and everything to gain from her death.
A compelling psychological thriller, perfect for fans of Liane Moriarty, C. L. Taylor and Sarah Pearse.
Critic Reviews
"Sensational...taut and claustrophobic, wickedly plotted and laced with the kind of dark humour that lifts Jo Spain to the top of my reading pile every single time." (Chris Whitaker)

Absolutely loved it.
This was one of those books that I both couldn’t wait to finish, and yet didn’t want to end at the same time. The narrator is excellent and does a great job of giving life to the cast of characters that form the gated community in which the story is set. The story is deliciously compelling, everyone has secrets, but were they really motives for murder?
I’ll definitely seek out more of Jo Spain’s novels and more books narrated by Michele Moran too.

A Delightfully Different Style of Thriller.
Delightfully different to ubiquitous "domestic thriller with the woman as the lead character", story. This book is a creatively new approach to thriller writing. (I can't say exactly how it is different without spoiling some of the pleasure.)
The prologue in particular is wonderfully written. It grabbed me right away and set the tone for the remainder.
Set in Ireland, we find a group of 6 large and expensive new houses, plus one original small house that was in place years before the developers came along. The now 7 houses are part of an exclusive gated community. We gradually learn that the occupants of the houses all have their own dirty little secrets, and just about all the people in the community have some reason why they might have killed Olive - the one who died.
The two detectives aren't the main focus, but we see them as human beings who have their own personal issues.
I loved the style of writing, some nice subtle humour. Good narration too.

Fantastic
Fabulous narration, you could tell who all the characters were without the narrator resorting to silly voices.
Story wise, really good plot with good pacing.I find this author very addictive and I was not disappointed with this book. Although a large cast of characters it doesn’t become over complicated, just the right amount of detail is given to each character to make the feel believable and for the listener to be invested in what happens next.
Amazing book again, fast becoming one of my fav authors.
Side note- I am from Scotland and I am loving the Irish narrators; (Scottish ones too) I have been listening to mostly theses accents and I find the American and English accents far too harsh now when listening.
If you like soothing voices, without compromising on plot jo Spain books are a good shout

Oh yes!
This is a really good one. I enjoyed this book very much and as my husband would tell you, I’m difficult to please. It’s well read on the whole, the story is quirky, not your usual flawed detective blah, blah, blah and it kept my interest right to the end. It’s not corny or silly and the picture of each household built gradually, changing my thoughts about them as it went along. Clever. Definitely worth a precious credit in my opinion.

Disappointing.
I found this book very disappointing indeed, having read Jo Spain before I was looking forward to this book, I did listen to a few chapters But it was just full of sex within a gated community and its various inhabitants. It became tedious to listen to and I returned this book.

Loved it.
Another fabulous story from Jo Spain, beautifully read by the wonderful Michele Moran. Jo Spain's wit and sense of humour woven together to create a drama of intrigue between families living within a small gated community. As always, Jo made the characters come alive and this is why I think the narration of a book is so very important. It can make or break a story for me. There are a lot of characters in this story and that is sometimes off putting for me because I have trouble keeping them all sorted. In this story though, Jo sights the house number at the beginning of each paragraph and I found this really helpful. I highly recommend this book.

Great story, never got bored, a murder mystery with a fun / funny element, good mix of characters, not hard to follow, very "Desperate Housewives". At first I didn't think the narrator was right but that ended up making more sense as the characters were developed . Definitely recommend this one

Really struggling with this
There are so many characters and the narrator doesn’t attempt or cannot change voice. It’s the same Irish accent for every character. I’m only a few chapters in and I cannot tell one character from another. I’m sure it’s a good story but I think it would have been better to have had a couple of narrators.
I will try to finish it but it’s very disappointing and confusing so far. Shame.
