Publisher's Summary

From Western word-slinger and Anthropologist W. Michael Gear, comes an entirely new type of western - a contemporary apocalyptic western.

For anthropology graduate student Sam Delgado, headed to the wilds of Wyoming, this is his last chance to save his graduate career. He and his urban classmates see this as the adventure of a lifetime: They are going to horse-pack in the wilderness to map and test a high-altitude archaeological site.

Until a cyber-attack collapses the American banking system and an already fractured nation descends into anarchy and chaos. All credit frozen, Sam and his archaeological field school are trapped in their high-altitude camp. With return to the East impossible, Sam, the woman he has come to love, and the rest of the students must rely on hard-bitten Wyoming ranchers for their very survival.

Guided only by an illusive Shoshone spirit helper, Sam will discover the meaning of self-sacrifice. Even at the cost of his life.

Haunting, provoking, frightening and prescient - in the end, all that stands between civilization and barbarism is one young man’s courage and belief in himself.

“Gear is a master when it comes to vividly described settings: You can smell the smoke, hear the wind in the trees, and feel the cold".

YUCK!

The author tries not to be Trumpian, (didn’t know it was political when I bought it) but it becomes more obvious as you go, until I finally put it down. I hate it when authors try to manipulate your ideology through an interesting tale. I did like where the story was going, but couldn’t handle all the reasons the author “exposes” well-meaning, but ultimately, bad Democrats.
Really? So done!

Sad but could be true fiction of 2010 America

Simplistic progression, with a few missing chapters. The evil of men in modern times. Survival of a few with duel point of view.

A Fiction of what Truly Could Happen

I was surprised by how logical and well written this story was. The Author did not gloss over reality nor was his political talk anything but an intellectual exercise to make the reader understand the differences in logic between various ideals. Differences that emphasize the need for true Law and Order.

"Cold Hard Facts That Portray Reality As It Is." This Book Quotes.

Civilization does indeed run on laws not morals. In fact it is usually the lack of morals that destroy Civilizations. Once it becomes acceptable to ignore the rule of law all that is left is Anarchy.

While our MC Sam was young and not ready for life in such a harsh new reality, he faced down the challenges before him choosing to remove the blindfolds of naive society in order to do everything he could to protect the one he loves. While he showed many moments of weakness his strength of character always came to the forefront when it mattered the most.

My only issue with this book was that it was sometimes hard to determine the difference between various characters. There were times when for a moment I was unsure of which character was speaking. The narrator did a great job but I think it would have been an amazing narration if a woman had voiced the female characters. Solely because I believe that it would have allowed Kearney to better emphasize the difference in male voices.

Pretty Good Read

I'm a fan of the genre but do get a bit tired of the cliché gunfighting stuff. Enjoyed the historical anthropology angle a lot for something refreshing. Find it amusing that some reviewers want to go political whilst complaining about the writer somehow being political. The irony is delicious. Look folks, reality is somewhere else. Nobody is going to last long shooting their way through a collapse type situation... But....if you think that you are going to hug it out with someone determined to control you or hurt you, you are sorely mistaken.
Using my monthly credit to get the second book in the series today. This is entertainment and, in that regard, team Gear does a great job. Their espionage thriller was also a blast.

Authentic

Mr. Gear writes this story as a man who certainly has lived the Wyoming life described - as have I. Much appreciated! The story is not only authentic, it is captivating and thoughtful. I’m looking for another work from this master writer as soon as I hit submit on this comment!

A good read/listen!

With all the doomsday stories out there, it can be fun trying to find one that really peaks my interest. Seeing that it was starting off with a different approach by using a group of millennials as the main characters I was drawn to it out of curiosity. I am glad I did as this book was never dull!
The character build up in some books can be boring. Not this one!
Plenty if action for those who enjoy that (me included)!
The narrator is excellent!
Enjoy the story!

Fantastic flow

The author did an excellent job developing the characters. Can't wait for the next book!!!
Loved the blend of native American folk lore. The book was very recent in how it tied current supply chain break down after covid, then topped with a banking crisis. VERY believable.

p.s. Not sure why "Yuck" was frightened off and rated this so low. I guess because the author posed questions -- to ALL sides - on how we could have proceeded better as a society to protect ourselves from dependency on other nations. We can only grow as individuals and a nation if we allow everyone to openly discuss and understand different viewpoints.

Simply the best of its kind.

As I said above , simply the best of its kind. To the naysayers, the hard core ; don’t believe those so far “in the tank” even if the tank is empty.
