Story
In his first-ever Doctor Who novel, Tom Baker’s incredible imagination is given free rein. A story so epic it was originally intended for the big screen, Scratchman is a gripping, white-knuckle thriller almost 40 years in the making. The Doctor, Harry and Sarah Jane Smith arrive at a remote Scottish island when their holiday is cut short by the appearance of strange creatures - hideous scarecrows who are preying on the local population. The islanders are living in fear, and the Doctor vows to save them all.

Publisher's Summary
Before the astonished eyes of his companions Ben and Polly, the Doctor's whole body has apparently been transformed. Now they are confronted by a stranger who claims to be their old friend...but how can they know whether to trust him?
The TARDIS's arrival on the swamp planet of Vulcan brings its own problems; the Doctor is mistaken for an official come to solve the Earth colony's in-fighting, and soon he and his companions are embroiled in political wranglings. However, a far more serious threat lurks within the colony. The scientist Lesterson has discovered a crashed space capsule, within it a group of inert metallic creatures which the Doctor identifies as Daleks.
By the time the Doctor and his friends discover the Daleks' true plan for the colony, it looks as if it might already be too late to stop them.
Anneke Wills, who plays Polly in the story, narrates this debut story for the second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, first broadcast in 1966 and long since missing from the television archives.

Electrifying Dalek thriller
If you could sum up Doctor Who in three words, what would they be?
This is the daleks at their most chilling. Possibly never beaten, certainly right up there in the best with the likes of Genesis, Evil, the original, the Invasion of the Earth & Remembrance. The story conforms to the great elements of greek tragedy, and the plot cleverly uses devices such as usurpation and multiple conspiracies, impersonation and mistaken identity, secrets and lies.
What did you like best about this story?
It is very hard to go past Power in terms of depth of agency given to the daleks and the degree of character growth afforded them. They are also up front and centre throughout the story. It is a Dalek fest.
Have you listened to any of Patrick Troughton and full cast ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I love the Troughton era and this is one of a number of unsurpassable gems.

Classic Doctor Who at its best.
This was a great way to introduce a new Doctor. By having the first monster he fights be the Daleks. Patrick Troughton was a great Doctor and I will enjoy listing to his adventures.

Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, arrives on scene
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes - this first Patrick Troughton's Doctor Who story from 1966 is precious as only the soundtrack exists and no video. Ben and Polly are confused that the old man with white hair has changed into a lively black haired man, who insists on playing a recorder. If that is not enough the Daleks are back and are not happy with their lot - cue some exterminating!
What other book might you compare Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks to, and why?
Any long running science fiction saga such as star wars or start trek
What does Patrick Troughton and full cast bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Great acting and narration to transport you to the Tardis and alien worlds.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
yes - about 2.5 hours long
Any additional comments?

beeb exterminates the daleks
Where does Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Very good, such a shame we can watch Patrick troughton's first story *shakes fist at the BBC* if only they had seen video tapes becoming a house hold thing

A new beginning
Would you listen to Doctor Who again? Why?
Such a shame that there are so many black and white episodes of Doctor Who missing but the recent discovery of 9 missing episodes gives me hope that the others including this gem are out there somewhere. 2nd Doctor Patrick Troughton's debut story taking over from William Hartnell and where his final story The Tenth Planet left off, this sees the newly regenerated Doctor come face to face with old enemies The Daleks on the planet Vulcan. No, not that one from Star Trek which would have been fantastic but instead an Earth colony where The Doctor gets mistaken for an ambassador from Earth and he decides to go along with it to find out what is going on after he finds the real one dead. Patrick Troughton is magnificent as The Doctor trying to convince companions Ben and Polly that he is the real thing and not an imposter and the soundtrack does give you an idea of what is happening on screen with linking narration by Anneke Wilks who played companion Polly. An excellent debut.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Doctor Who?
The Daleks sound fantastic.
Which character – as performed by Patrick Troughton and full cast – was your favourite?
Cast on a whole are good but it's Troughton who is the best here.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Didn't quite have time to listen in one sitting.

From when Daleks were smart as well as scary
Whether you're a new-who or classic series fan this story should be on the curriculum! Too often you meet the daleks as something a bit bumbling, only happy to shout out their plan to a non-dalek at the first opportunity. Here they're properly sneaky, smart and manipulative.
Recently the show tried to recreate some of the magic from Power of the Daleks in Victory of the Daleks but soon lost the subtler (and best) parts of the story in favour of things like spitfires in space and it just goes to show that they're going to struggle to ever beat the original.
The last reason to get this audio book is that you can't watch the original episodes anymore! The narration is more than up to the job of describing the scene though and, besides, imagination creates the best pictures...
