Tim Scott, an African-American US senator, and Trey Gowdy, a white US congressman, won’t allow racial lines to divide them. They work together, eat meals together, campaign together, and make decisions together. Yet in the fall of 2010 - as two brand-new members of the US House of Representatives - they did not even know each other. Their story as politicians and friends began the moment they met and is a model for others seeking true reconciliation.

It Worked for Me is filled with vivid experiences and lessons learned that have shaped the legendary career of the four-star general and former Secretary of State Colin Powell. At its heart are Powell's "Thirteen Rules" - such as "Get mad, then get over it" and "Share credit" - that introduce his principles for effective leadership: conviction, hard work, and, above all, respect for others. A natural storyteller, Powell offers warm and engaging parables with wise advice on succeeding in the workplace and beyond.

In 2012, on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, an improvised explosive device left Dan Crenshaw's right eye destroyed and his left blinded. Only through the careful hand of his surgeons, and what doctors called a miracle, did Crenshaw's left eye recover partial vision. And yet, he persevered, completing two more deployments. Why? There are certain stories we tell ourselves about the hardships we face - we can become paralyzed by adversity or we can adapt and overcome. We can be fragile or we can find our fortitude. Black Americans have long been shackled to the Democrats. Seeing no viable alternative, they have watched liberal politicians take the Black vote for granted without pledging anything in return. In Blackout, Owens argues that this automatic allegiance is both illogical and unearned. She contends that the Democrat Party has a long history of racism and exposes the ideals that hinder the Black community’s ability to rise above poverty, live independent and successful lives, and be an active part of the American dream.

Publisher's Summary
Number-one New York Times best seller
Former congressman and prosecutor Trey Gowdy teaches you how to effectively communicate and persuade on the issues that matter most to you, drawing on his experience in the courtroom and the halls of Congress.
“A must-read for people who want to learn how best to succeed.” (Dana Perino, Fox News host and best-selling author of Everything Will Be Okay)
You do not need to be in a courtroom to advocate for others. You do not need to be in Congress to champion a cause. From the boardroom to the kitchen table, opportunities to make your case abound, and Doesn’t Hurt to Ask shows you how to seize them. By blending gripping case studies from nearly two decades in a courtroom and four terms in national politics with personal stories and practical advice, Trey Gowdy walks you through the tools and the mindset needed to effectively communicate your message.
Along the way, Gowdy reflects on the moments in his life when he learned the most about how to argue and convince. He recounts his missteps during his first murder trial, the conversation that changed his view on criminal justice reform, and what he learned while questioning James Comey and Secretary Hillary Clinton.
Sharing the techniques he perfected advocating in law and politics, Gowdy helps you identify your objective, understand your personal jury, and engage in the art of questioning so you can be heard, be understood, and, ultimately, move others. Whether it’s getting a boss to take a chance on your idea, convincing someone to support your cause, or urging a child to invest more effort in an important task, movement requires persuasion. Doesn’t Hurt to Ask shows you how to persuade, no matter the jury and no matter the cause.
Critic Reviews
“Gowdy was tough when he was a federal prosecutor, and he drew on that experience when interrogating individuals who appeared before Congress, during his tenure as a South Carolina representative. He possesses an uncanny ability to ask the right questions to pull out the truth from those on Capitol Hill - no easy feat. Doesn’t Hurt to Ask demonstrates how to ask questions to move people and get the answers you need to make decisions and become a stronger communicator.” (Sean Hannity, nationally syndicated radio and TV host and best-selling author of Live Free or Die)
“If I could have anyone in the world argue my case, it would be Trey Gowdy - the person I trust the most to make common sense. Whether it’s made on a football field or in a courtroom, a good argument is a good argument, no matter the authority. In Doesn’t Hurt to Ask, Gowdy is the authority.” (Lou Holtz, hall of fame coach and best-selling author of Wins, Losses, and Lessons)
“Gowdy, one of our finest courtroom lawyers, has written a very fine book on the art of persuasion. In Doesn’t Hurt to Ask, you’ll learn a lot about the importance of listening to evidence, using words with precision, and, above all, asking good questions. You’ll also learn some things about being a better person. In the end, this is a book about finding a purpose bigger than yourself, and then moving others toward that purpose with you.” (William J. Bennett, best-selling author of The Book of Virtues)

Using questions to persuade!
Our nation is poorer for not having Trey Gowdy in Congress anymore. But DOESN'T HURT TO ASK is not about politics and it is not political. It is about the power of using properly framed questions to communicate, connect and persuade. It is an outstanding book by a marvelous person. Gowdy is not a professional narrator but he narrates his book with the authority that only he can provide. Doesn't hurt to ask is recommended for everyone. I also recommend UNIFIED by Tim Scott and Trey Gowdy.

Good points, but not the most persuasive.
Lots of stuff to take away from it, but a lot of political speak interspersed. I didn't know who this guy was by name, but he's certainly accomplished. Unfortunately his reading of the work is hit or miss, sometimes great and passionate, other times dull and uninspiring. He's clearly not an author but he does a good job presenting persuasion techniques.
The latter part of the book is heavily politicized because of his career. He caveats this multiple times and says he's just trying to present an examples of the techniques. Despite his caveats the book loses track of the educational core and veers close to trying to persuade you of certain views. This is not 100% detrimental but it does color my opinion of the back half of the book. He also is a Dallas Cowboys fan so he clearly is not a smart man.

I miss his voice in Congress.
He speaks from the heart; sometimes with strong but emotional voice. He tells of his transition from being terrified of public speaking in a courtroom, to being eager to start talking. How he was afraid of TV cameras, and stared at his shoes during a Meghan Kelly interview. He’s now the greatest orator I’ve seen in decades, yet he shares the challenges to develop that skill. If you’re a brilliant introvert, read this.

Teaching an extraordinary experience
There is so much to share. I will be brief.
The author, Gowdy, teaches very important elements of courtroom procedures important in winning cases. Asking the right questions at the appropriate times are very crucial. It takes time to do it right. I was very impressed when he said " it all conected and came together one day in the middle of a court procedure ". It took work, work, work. You have to really want to win. He has a big wonderful family. These teachings can also be applied to having a loving family life. His three daughters can attest to this!

Informative and entertaining at the same time
As a layperson who has (mostly successfully) defended himself in court appearances multiple times for minor traffic offences I found Mr Gowdy's revelations and experiences to be very insightful and inspiring.
Through my personal sojourns into the 'shearing sheds' of the magistrate's courts down here in Australia I learnt to never make claims, or if needing to do so, form them into questions whenever possible. Gowdy goes much deeper into the 'whys' of this tactic and backs them up with very informative examples and different techniques of questioning.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in not only law and politics but also those interested in learning how to persuade those around them in non-belligerent ways and trigger contemplation rather than conflict... be it family, friends, work colleagues or social media 'antagonists'.

Autobiography/Overview of the American Legal Syste
An enjoyable listen. A semi-autobiographical, legal system synopsis more than an illustration of using questions as tools. I think a couple of chapters covered 'questions to communicate' adequately, however, I was expecting some powerful or useful techniques but I didn't find any.
I don't live in America so I'm unconcerned with Trey's politics, though he sounds a decent chap. Talked at length about Hilary and her emails, and assumes everyone is a Christian believer or religious at least. I have no interest in either subject though I did smile listening to his presumtions.
