Publisher's Summary

A Recorded Books Audio Original production of songs and stories performed by Dolly herself, Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics goes beyond the glitz, glamour, and rhinestones to the warmth, heart, and soul of a treasured pop-culture icon.

In this exclusive audio performance, the 10-time Grammy Award-winning artist weaves her words with music and memories to give listeners the stories behind the stories of her most cherished songs. And with some 3,000 songs to her credit, Dolly uses her gift for lyrics to connect to people of all genders, generations, and geographies.

Showcasing nearly 100 of her most popular songs, including “Jolene”, “I Will Always Love You”, “9 to 5”, and “Coat of Many Colors”, to name a few, this one-of-a-kind audio experience delivers answers to fans’ most burning questions: How close did Dolly come to singing “I Will Always Love You” as a duet with Elvis? How did she become an actress? And exactly who was Jolene?

Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics is a must-have memoir for fans of country music, music history, and (of course!) Dolly herself.

Editor's Pick

A treasure trove of songs and stories
November is turning out to be quite the musical month here at Audible. So while I typically go for fiction finds when choosing my picks, I just had to jump on the bandwagon (get it, “band” wagon?) and join in on the fun. How lucky are we to have a new memoir—filled with personal stories, life wisdom, and, yes, musical interludes—from the American treasure that is Dolly Parton!? She frames her story through her songs—taking the listener on a real musical journey. Dolly is timeless. Her authenticity and talent shine through, and she reminds me of all that is good in this world. —Tricia F., Audible Editor

Interview without questions

This is great for Dolly fans, but unlike a usual memoir it felt more like an interview with a male voice guiding the conversation without asking direct questions. It could also pass for a podcast with super short episodes aka 180 chapters of about two minutes each that could make a great daily Dollyism listening for super fans to hear a bit of her song and the story behind a song before starting a day. Best part was definitely hearing her sing bits of the songs and then explain the meaning and stories behind the lyrics.

More like an interview

I wish I could give it 5 stars, but it didn’t read like a book to me. It felt too much like an interview for me.

Dolly for the Nobel Peace Prize

Just a perfect gift from Dolly Parton! The audiobook is like having a conversation with her as she recounts writing her favorite songs! Between this, her song catalog, the Imagination Library, and funding a COVID vaccine, it’s easy to see why she deserves the Nobel!

Hearing Dolly- better than reading

This was a joy! She is genuine- a study in contradiction. Weaving in musical clips is something you can’t experience in the book. Made me happy- uplifting in difficult times- joyful!!

A bit disappointing

Not really sure what I expected but I though that there would be more of Dolly's songs. There are just snippets on here when surely we could have had the whole song. Her chat in between was nice, like having her over for a cup of tea but I don't think there are too many insights here.

This is not a book

There were only a few reviews when I bought this, none at the time said that this was more like an interview.
It’s also not a very good interview, there is no flow or conversation. It’s like Dolly had a page of questions and then answered them one at a time.
It’s actually hard and annoying to follow, because there is no flow.
I have never wanted to return a book before, but I want to return this one - how do I do that? I am so disappointed, because I absolutely love Dolly and I so wanted to love this “book” too.
There are better Dolly stories and interviews than this one. Save your credit.

Cheerful and fun

You will laugh in the car, or where ever you’re listening. The format is one question or comment read by a voice that sounds straight out of six feet under ( remember that show ?) , then Dolly Parton chatting for 30 min, and singing her favourite lyrics to her songs ( spoiler they are all her favourites) And it’s perfect. She’s open about her life, and if you want to know a bit about the means of songs you’re in luck. The Epstein comment shocked me . The sound production is super easy to listen to. No echos or background noises. Great fun. More interview then book. And some promos in there, but you don’t mind cause it’s a fun listen .

Repetitive and not a book

I wanted to like this but it is really just an extended interview. If I had started a drinking game every time Dolly said "it's one of my favourite songs", I would have dropped down drunk less than halfway through.

Delightful and Easy Listening

Don’t be disappointed as this does not read like a book and contains several stories from Dolly’s life that influenced her song writing. Dolly’s narration is cheerful, funny, and engaging that makes for a relaxing and easy listen. The multiple song clips throughout the narrative are a bonus.

Very Interesting

I really enjoyed listening to Dollys story. I learned a lot eg that she had written 3000 songs. Snippets of songs let me hear several I had never heard before. Also some TV movies. I now have some research to do to find them as I've been a fan for years

Beautiful story of some of her favourite songs and the people who have passed though her life

Wonderful story of faith, family and love. Perfect example of raising up children in the way they should go with a God centred moral compass. Raised with compassion for all God’s creatures and strong love and respect for self and family. Shows how everything may not be exactly how you want and certainly not easy but Ms Parton has been smart enough to know that He works all things for good and she is an example of where hard work and belief in something bigger than herself can take you. Well worth listening. (P.S She mentioned Weinstein not Epstein)
