Publisher's Summary
The floor was stone cold on her bare skin. Her heart pounded in her chest. Not a soul knows where I am, she thought as she took in the darkness around her. And then she heard his footsteps....
When a body is found stuffed into a barrel at a garbage dump, covered in long red lacerations, Detective Jenna Alton and her new deputy, David Kane, rush to the scene.
Nothing ever happens in the small American town of Black Rock Falls, so Jenna believes the victim must be one of two recent missing persons, and she fears for the life of the other.
Both were strangers to the town, but there's nothing else to link them. Jenna knows someone must have seen something, but no one's talking. How well does she really know the people around her?
Then a disturbing clue makes Jenna suspect a connection with other disappearances in the town's history. Just when she begins asking the right questions, she realizes she's being followed. Is she next on the killer's list?
In a race against time, Jenna and David must unlock the dark secret at the heart of the town before it's too late....
A completely addictive detective thriller that will have you guessing right to the end. Perfect for listeners of Robert Dugoni, Karin Slaughter, and Rachel Abbott.

Zero Stars if I could
Cheesy romance, title misleading. If I could get zero stars I would, this was the worst book I have ever tried to force myself through to no avail. The narration was so horrid I do not know if the book was well written, I could not get past the lousy reader. What I did get out of the story was unfathomable, the characters of the book weak, even the police force lacked sensibility. I’m sure there are people in this world that are full of this much stupidity but hopefully not in my small town law enforcement.
I could not even force myself to finish despite trying. I found myself missing most of it and having to rewind due to my mind wondering. I made it to chapter 30 before throwing in the towel giving it up and returning relieving my beloved credit back. Thank you audible for giving us the option to get our credits back.

Another naïve lead female character .. whyyy do most of these writers insist on making women seem clueless.
Ok so I was so looking forward to a strong trained female AND male professional law enforcement presence. But once again a writer makes the female end up looking like a weak untrained idiot woman who makes multiple mistakes. Why is it the male appears 100% competent here making no mistakes and a trained female agent is left looking like a total noob. Now that being said. The concept of the duo is awesome and the story was good. I am going to get the second one in this series HOPING its not going to continue to be a damsel in distress and gets bit more like a real female intelligent agent would be. I desperately want to read about a tough woman who can fend for herself for once. The narration was pretty good on this one.

Terrible book, awful narrator!
I can't believe the good reviews on this book. This narrator was the worst I've heard in a long long time. The main character is a woman sheriff who constantly tells her deputy she is in charge like a small child trying to be the boss. She is supposed to have all this specialized training but does stupid things. REALLY stupid things. The story line is inconsistent and immature. It was an effort to finish it. If I could have given the narrator a minus 5 I would have. I will never listen to this narrator again and if this is a sample of this writer's work I won't ever purchase another book by D. K. Hood! Don't waste your money or credit on this one!

More romance than mystery detective
While I enjoy a good romance, I hate those that hides behind another genre. The amount of time perfect, toned bodies are mentioned here is annoying. Equally annoying is a woman being depicted as independent and strong (saying she doesnt need anyone to take care of her every 5 lines) but is very unbalanced, fickle, and even relies on emotions to do her job as a sherif.

Not sure about this series
I nearly gave up after the first 20 minutes. I found the actions of the Sheriff totally unbelievable, didn’t really like either of the main characters, and the narrator isn’t brilliant! I persevered because I hadn’t got anything else to listen to. It was an ok story, I guessed who the murderer(s) was/were about halfway through, but I didn’t really warm to anyone except the rookie deputy. I will listen to the next in the series and hope it improves, safe in the knowledge that I can return it if I need to. Quite disappointing.
