Publisher's Summary

Kate, born to abusive, drug addicted parents, identifies an inner God voice when she is very young. This voice, and the support of her grandmother, helps her overcome her circumstances instead of falling victim to them. However, as she grows up she finds that the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree, and she discovers that she is an addict herself. Deciding not to go down the path her parents went, she rises above her circumstances again and chooses the path of recovery. Now eight years sober she shares how faith helped her continue to take positive action and avoid victimization every step of the way.

"Impossible to put down. Both funny and yet often terrifying, this is a raw, unflinching account of a chaotic and abusive childhood overcome by inner strength and an enduring sense of humor."

Good book, Valley girl narration

I really enjoyed this book. Sad as it was, it was a very good listen about two horribly addicted parents who never changed. The abuse the Author suffered was sickening.
I wish the Author went with a narrator instead of using her own voice. She was very Valley girl Kardashian like and I feel it took a bit away from the story.

Spoiled little brat

Wow- hard to believe this ungrateful spoiled brat thinks she had a rough childhood- she should volunteer at a woman’s shelter and she may understand just how lucky she is and had wonderful she had it

Extreme foul language ..

I did not the language or the very negative tone. It was not very uplifting at all. It was dark.

Intense!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I was surprised by this book. It was well written and Kate does an amazing narration. I am so happy that she did it herself as she is able to catch all of the emotions rather than leaving it to chance that another narrator would be able to convey her feelings properly. This is a terrible story of abuse and neglect. I felt so bad for Kate from the beginning and - I admit- I didn't realize it was a true story. My heart was breaking for the children even before I realized everything in here was Kate's own past. Unfortunately, this is a very common story for thousands (millions?) of children which abusive, alcoholic, drug addicted parents.

Very well written and well performed. I would definitely listen to it again and read it again

Great story!!

I'm not normally a big fan of authors who narrate their own books, but not only was this a great, heartbreaking book...but she did an excellent job of narrating. The story line got down to the nitty gritty of what addiction is like, the victims who suffered for it, the addicts themselves, who want to put the blame on others, & the hope that people who want to change can. This invoked all kinds of emotions in me...& isn't that really what a good book does?
Two thumbs up for this one!

I was given this book free, for an honest review.

Sad, but brings into reality what some kids really do go through.

This story is heartbreaking. However, it is very well written in terms of the timeline. Not jumping back and forth. So sad what addiction can do to one. Congrats to Kate for realizing that she did have an addiction, getting help and getting clean. I hope you continue to better yourself everyday.

Heartbreaking Story told by a true survivor!

Kate Russell is a true survivor! What she (and her sister) went through is just horrific! I loved listening to her tell her story and how she did throw some humor in there!! So needless to say I laughed and cried.
Kate, if you ever see this review, thank you for sharing your story. I felt as if I watched you grow. I could picture your “Gamma” & “Pa”. I wish you all the best.

A great read for anyone who has struggled

This was a great read for anyone who has grown up with abuse, addiction or struggled with addiction themselves. I loved that the audible was read by the author so you get the true experience of her story telling. Overall theme is overcoming it all and growing.
