Story
Tommy Phan is a successful detective novelist living the American dream in Southern California. One evening he comes home to find a small rag doll on his doorstep. It’s a simple doll, covered entirely in white cloth, with crossed black stitches for the eyes and mouth, and another pair forming an X over the heart. Curious, he brings it inside. That night Tommy hears an odd popping sound and looks up to see the stitches breaking over the doll’s heart. And in minutes the fabric of Tommy Phan’s reality will be torn apart. Something terrifying emerges from the pristine white cloth....

Publisher's Summary
Harry Lyon was a rational man, a cop who refused to let his job harden his soul. Then one fateful day, he was forced to shoot a man--and a homeless stranger with bloodshot eyes uttered the haunting words that challenged Harry Lyon's sanity: "Ticktock, ticktock. You'll be dead in sixteen hours...Dead by dawn...Dead by dawn...Dead by dawn..."
Critic Reviews
“A razor-sharp, nonstop, suspenseful story.”(The San Diego Union-Tribune)
“Tumbling, hallucinogenic prose....‘Serious’ writers...might do well to examine his technique.” (The New York Times Book Review)
“Perhaps more than any other author, Koontz writes fiction perfectly suited to the mood of America...novels that acknowledge the reality and tenacity of evil but also the power of good...[and that] entertain vastly as they uplift.” (Publishers Weekly)

Great book
I have read this possibly a couple of times. Listening to it confirms my suspicion that I am a 'skimmer' reader! I rush reading passages as I really want to know what comes next. I am being pleasantly surprised with audiobooks in that they sound like a story I may have read about rather than actually read. Thoroughly enjoyed this and narration was good. Really liked that he read slightly faster at the exciting parts bit like I would've read it! I love Dean Koontz and am happily looking forward to listening to more that I've previously read.

Almost...
This was the first Dean Koontz book I ever read. My mom borrowed it from a coworker of hers when I was thirteen. I found the story to be very interesting. Indeed it was what made me want to read Koontz. The narrator, however, leaves something to be desired.
It all began when Harry Lyon, a California homicide detective, stops at a burger joint for lunch while on the streets with his synical, wisecracking partner Connie Gulliver. RIght inte middle of the meal a bland-faced man enters the establishment and unexpectedly peppers the place with bullets. After a successful chase which ends in the gunman being shot to death, Harry leaves the restaurant for a breath of fresh air only to have an unsettling encounter with a molevolent, red-eyed vagrant with a gravelly voice, who warns Harry he'll be dead by dawn before suddenly dissolving into a cloud of evryday trash. This is only the beginning of a bizarre chain of supernatural events that not only put Harry's and COnnie's lives in jeopardy but force Harry, a straight-laced and often stubborn man, to make some difficult emotional changes in order to cope with the impossible events that have befallen him.
As I said te story was extremely well-written. J.O. Sanders' anrration however, though not horrible, does leave something to be desired. He doesn't have quite the right voice for this kind of material, though I will give him major props for his various characterizations, particularly in the matter of the menacing vagrant. When it comes to the narration parts however, he falls somewhat short, particularly in those parts where the story is told from the point of view of this novel's villain. In that area narrators such as Steven Lang or Anne Twomey generally do a better job. Even so, this was an enjoyable listen overall.

Creepier as a kid...
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I just remember being more creeped out and intrigued by the concept behind Drackman's golems. As a teen, I was legitimately terrified by the idea of someone being able to stop time and kill a bunch of people, and resume time as if it hadn't stopped. The book didn't carry the same terror as it did when I read as a younger kid.
Which character – as performed by Jay O. Sanders – was your favorite?
Jay O. Sanders is a strong narrator. I would listen to another book by him.

Mixed Feelings
I had very mixed reactions with this book. It is another re-release of one of Koontz's earlier books. I had a difficult time staying with it until about 80% of the way through. It doesn't read like a typical DK book. I really don't know how to explain it. Even if you are an avid Koontz fan, as am I, you may or my not like this one. It is scary, stupid, brilliant, gory and overall a jumbled mix of emotions and actions.

Tick Tock -- Bomb?
This is my second Koontz book and I enjoyed his "Lightning" far more. Although his writing talents shown through on this, I thought the plot wasn't very creative and, even for a work of science fiction, it was much too contrived. The cops deduced things pretty much out of thin air and the dog talk became boring and tedious after a few minutes. Narrator Sanders also did his level best to make me shut off the book with his grating renditions of Tick Tock and the guy with the hand grenades. The fact that I liked the lady cop character pushed this book from two to three stars. I have another Koontz book in my library and I'm hopeful it's more like "Lightning" than it is this one.

Imperfect but still Koontz
Dragon Tears is not one of my favorite Koontz, but it is not bad. The story is a little preachier than I like and the story is a little Koontz-formulaic. That formula has a mildly interesting supernatural bad guy, strong female cop, a conflicted male cop, a very good dog, and other assorted characters. I found the powers of the bad guy over the top. After a nice setup the story concludes too rapidly without a resounding ending. So, it you love Koontz, give it a try.
