Publisher's Summary

In the city of Magic's Bend, I protect what's mine. No matter what.

To the world, I'm a just a Conjurer. To my closest friends, I'm a FireSoul - a dangerous Magica with forbidden powers and a dragon's soul. The downside? If anyone discovers what I am, I'm dead. So I lay low, kicking butt with my weapons, not my magic.

Things get ugly when I witness the murder of a powerful vampire ally and become the key suspect. Soon, I'm hunted by the sexiest, strongest supernatural I've ever met. Ares is an unheard of vampire hybrid, and it's hard to say if he wants to kiss me or kill me.

I've got three days to catch the real killer. The bad news? It will take my forbidden magic to succeed. But can I control it, much less keep my secret with Ares watching my every move? Especially when the stakes get ever higher?

I'm used to protecting others...now I have to protect myself.

This is just the start of Pheonix Knight's adventures. This omnibus contains all five books in the Dragon's Gift: The Protector Series.

Captain Kirk

Narrator can only seem to read 4-6 words at a time like Captain Kirk from Star Trek
Got irritating after just s few chapters.
Story seemed good. Just lost interest due to choppy narration

A great fantasy trip

The age old struggle between good and evil with magic, love, and dragons thrown in. Laurel Schroeder does a great job of voicing the myriad of characters.

The protector complete series

The story line contains some portions of history,, and bits of mythology. The characters are likable and believable. The narrator did a nice job with providing unique voices for each character.

Pookies for the Win

So I listened to the complete Protector Series. A very long listen, but I was enjoying the story and the world that Linsey Hall had built.

But this is Nix's story, and it became evident as I was listening that this wasn't the beginning of the larger story and that the world and many of the characters had already been fleshed out in other books.

The books of this series all seem to follow the same formula. I could see the pattern of strong female characters faced with quests and trials like those out of a video game. Nix apparently cannot go a week without someone testing her worthiness or sending her on an impossible quest. Sucks to be her.

As a side note, there are book series telling the stories of Cas and Del, although I haven't heard or read them, that begin this overall story. And I wasn't at all surprised when at the end I was told there would be books about Bree and Anna.

Anyway, this is your standard urban fantasy with shades of romance. You know the formula – throw two incredibly attractive people together who are on opposite sides of a conflict and sparks are guaranteed to fly. Eventually they will begrudgingly admit that they are made for each other. I'm guessing the same thing happens to Cas and Del.

That said, I like Nix and her supernatural tale of Vampires, Dragons and Old Gods and I'm definitely glad I got to hear her whole story through to the end. My favorite characters, though, are the little dragons from the Vampire Realm. Who doesn't want a couple of Pookie buddies?

The narrator does a good job of embodying Nix's sarcastic nature. However, her narration is an acquired taste, like coffee (which I still don't like). When I first started listening, I was put off by her delivery. She has a weird cadence and some odd inflections. It finally grew on me so that by the time I got to book three, it was normal and I couldn't imagine anyone else as Nix. Although, I must admit that I really hated her Ares voice and still do.

If you're a fan of strong women in impossible situations, then give this series a try. And give Laurel Schroeder's narration some time to grow on you. You may end up enjoying the ride as much as I did.

And as a final note, it's way too convenient that the main character's full name is Phoenix.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Badly narrated

It was read not like a story...but like a bunch of sentences in a list. A pause after every period lasting much too long

couldn't listen

I don't know if the books are actually good. The narration was all I could pay attention too. I tried to give it a chance but the narrator isn't for me. There have been only a couple books I turned off but this is one of them. The story line sounded interesting but it wasn't enough to get me to listen to the narrator any longer.

Bad Narrator

Could not get past the first 10 minutes. Not only was the narrator very breathy and the way the story was read was off-putting.

Just a bad story the dragged on.

The characters where boring or under explained. The plot of the whole thing was just a mess and a mismatch of everything. The world setting sucked and the love story just is a tease. The ending was even bad that only thing i had hoped to be at least good. Wouldnt recommend.

Couldn't handle the Narrator's Voice

Couldn't even list for a half hour...the narration was very breathy as if she was always trying to talk sexy.

Cadence and Tone...

So far, (6 hours in) I really like this story line. Unfortunately, the reader reminds me of a wheel thats out of round. Zoom zoom bump, zoom zoom bump... She has a pacing style that makes her race through a few words and pause, then race pause, race pause.
So annoying & distracting!!!

I need to get the written version

Because the Audible one was bad. The narrator has the repetitive speech pattern that has ruined many a book for me. It becomes sing-song and predicable. She also has a limited range of different character voices and emotional range. I personally don’t like the lilting R’s, but that is just an accent, I think.
Because of these qualities I could not make it past Chapter 9. I think it would be an interesting story, but in the written version.
