Story
Young Kindan has no expectations other than joining his father in the mines of Camp Natalon, a coal mining settlement struggling to turn a profit far from the great Holds where the presence of dragons and their riders means safety and civilization. Mining is fraught with danger. Fortunately, the camp has a watch-wher, a creature distantly related to dragons and uniquely suited to specialized work in the dark, cold mineshafts.

Story
Sassinak was 12 when the raiders came. That made her just the right age: old enough to be used, young enough to be broken. Or so the slavers thought. But Sassy turned out to be a little different from your typical slave girl. Maybe it was her unusual physical strength. Maybe it was her friendship with the captured Fleet crewman. Maybe it was her spirit. Whatever it was, it wouldn’t let her resign herself to the life of a slave. She bided her time, watched for her moment. Finally it came, and she escaped. But that was only the beginning for Sassinak.

Hard Boiled Morally Ambiguous Epic Fantasy
- By Jefferson on 03-18-11
By: Glen Cook
Publisher's Summary
For two centuries the dragonriders have been practicing and training, passing down from generation to generation the Threadfighting techniques learned on the fly by their besieged ancestors. And most of the Lord Holders are prepared to protect their people, to provide sanctuary, to assemble groundcrews to search out and destroy any Thread that might be missed by the dragons soaring overhead. All but one.
Even now the ominous signs are appearing: the violent winter storms and volcanic eruptions that are said to herald the approach of the Red Star and its lethal spawn. Impossibly, one stubborn Lord Holder, Chalkin of Bitra, refuses to believe - and that disbelief could spell disaster for all of Pern. So while the dragonriders desperately train to face an enemy they've never fought before, they and the other Lord Holders must find a way to deal with Chalkin and protect Bitra.

Narration is distracting.
This one is a great chapter in the Pernese saga.
The narration severely diatracts from the storyline. The articulation of speech is too strong: it feels like a forced performance. The narrator's depiction of the characters give every single character a distasteful persona. However, the dragons' speech was very cleverly differentiated.

Another fun and exhilarating adventure on Pern!
What a wonderful book! The characters and plot were so intriguing! I loved having both dragonrider and non-draginrider PoVs in the same book! I loved learning about the forming/creating of the Teaching Songs, and about what life was like as they started losing the more advanced technology of the "ancients"! And Dick Hill's performance was great! He had such distinct voices for each individual character and was able to convey different emotions for each!

Dragonseye
Another fantastic book from the Dragonriders of Pern series. This story begins 250 years after the first fall. That is a lot of time in between each fall of thread. With so much time it is understandable that some begin to question if thread will ever fall again.
One of those that doesn't believe thread fall will return is a cruel Lord Holder. A lot of the story is around this despicable and cruel man. They go into how he treats his guests as well as his own holders. He doesn't get ready for the imminent fall and thus puts his own people in jeopardy.
I loved getting to know the other Lord Holders and the Dragon riders who are all getting ready for the thread fall to come. They train and clear land around each hold. They have lost so much of the technology that they came to this planet with. It is interesting to hear how they get along without that technology and the steps they take to fix issues that they have with more simple or non technological ideas. It is a lot for these people to take with never having faced thread before and having to train and get ready for something that is so frightening.
The characters are fantastic and the story is wonderful. I am really enjoying reading these books in chronological order.

Excellent book, poor recording
The book itself is excellent (as are most of the books in the Dragonriders of Pern series). What was disapointed was the quality of the recording, it sounded like it was recorded in a tunnel...even when downloaded at the best audio quality Audible offers. The narrator was also not up to Anne McCaffrey standards for previous books. The audiobook overall sounded amateurish.

great reader for a good book.
This is not my favorite of Anne's Pern novels, but it is still really good. She is such a great world-builder and character-builder. As usual, the book skips around between viewpoints to tell different stages of the plot, but it all wraps together to give a great snapshot of life as Pern transitions from sci-fi colony to fantsy world. Its really cool to hear. And the reader is really good at building up the tension and giving enough pause and change of tone that transition between scenes, between moods, and between POV were easy to track. I was laughing and in tears at moments that never hit me like this when I was reading it to myself. Excellent job.
