Story
What peace Helo had hoped for by defeating King on the Tempest is short-lived. Evil doesn’t go quietly, and it’s always hungry for revenge. After his parents are murdered, Helo rejoins the Ash Angel Organization ready to hunt creatures of evil and obliterate the six remaining Dread Loremasters. But terrifying portents from Tela Mirren’s dreams and dire warnings from Aclima hint that crossing darkness incurs a terrible price, and Helo will be the one who pays.

In the spring of 1903, the 311, known to locals as “The Majestic”, carried more than 100 passengers on board toward a tunnel mouth that would allow the 13-car locomotive to pass safely through the underbelly of the Canadian Rockies. Rex Walker always wanted to be like his father: a daring, adventurous man, traveling the world in pursuit of mysterious relics. While teaching anthropology at a Boston college, Rex attempts to bury the past, until he discovers a hidden clue he can’t ignore. With the help of a former student, he teams up with an alien-obsessed billionaire, and they search for the fabled Bridge. As an unidentified object nears Pluto, speculation surges. Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Publisher's Summary
When Trace took a bullet for his wife’s lover, his life ended...but didn’t.
By the divine promise of sacrifice, he awakened an Ash Angel with a new body, new powers, and a new war to fight. Cassandra, his temperamental trainer, tries to get him ready to battle Ghostpackers and Dreads, but it might be too little too late: for the first time in history, the Ash Angels are faltering against the fury of an evil more ancient than they are.
While he fights to survive run-ins with a Sheid-hunted pop star and a gorgeous but dangerous Dread, Trace realizes his new life cannot erase the trauma of the old. Thrust onto the front lines of a violent war with ancient ambition, Trace finds that the deadliest demons are the ones lurking in his own mind.

Feels like a Christian genre to me
Made it about three quarters of the way through the book I will say in advance I bought it simply because RC Bray was the narrator and he never fails to impress but overall just not enthusiastic about the read while well done with the characters well-defined and interesting story it feels like a going to the Catholic Church confessional main character beating himself up every time he's torched that along with the lack of profanity from both factions gave it a very strange religious vibe that I found unappealing just my two cents all in all so far I believe that the story is worth the read the reader is worth listening to but I won't continue the series personally

Take my money and give me the crack!
I found this one hard to put down. In fact I was tempted several times to speed the narration up just so I could hurry up and find out what would happen next.
The author and narration make a excellent combination. I’ll do my best to explain why I think this, by starting with the story itself.
The author certainly has a grasp on the the traditional theology of angels and demons. He raises questions such as ‘can angels still fall? Can angels be saved? How do angels compare to humankind? The order or structure of angels? These questions have been discussed by many scholars before and will probably continue to happen. However, the story itself makes this ‘interesting’ aspect of religion more believable… no not sure believable is the correct term. Definitely, more enjoyable anyway!
I loved the themes of sin, forgiveness, revenge, grace. But please don’t go thinking this a religious book. It certainly does have religious tones. I mean it has to given the subject matter. The very human themes creates tension within the characters that are very relatable to all. This along with the twist and turns in the plot made for a very enjoyable listen.
Now the narration. RC Bray once again knocks it out of the park. The guy is a freak.. end of story… nothing more needs to be said it is that good!
At over 17 hours worth of listening, this one has to be excellent value for money. The title does say it is part of a series. If it is I would pre order the next. But unlike so many first books in a series. This one does not leave you hanging for an ending. It just leaves you hanging waiting for more!

I will never look at a McRib sandwich the same way
"I see dead people" ! Then getting run over by a truck is a start of a very bad day. But for Trace, it opens up an entirely worthwhile existence, albeit in a new and entirely unexpected way . I sniffed out this audiobook by following the bread crumb trail of R.C. Bray and he always delivers a sumptuous meal. I am so happy to find this gem and I will get in line for the next one in the series.
Got it all, Action, Love, Regret, Honor and a captivating story line. After binge listening to the audiobook, I woke up to a sweat in my bedroom seeing the red glow of the room and realizing it was only my Digital Clock red numerals illuminating the room. But what a rush of a memory.
The storyline was not too evangelical and was light enough that I enjoyed the plot twists and the final chapters blew me away.
I cracked up at the reference to the age old mystery proposed, Did Adam and Eve have a belly button? Har har.

Good book
Overall it was a good book. the only thing that got to me were little inaccuracies, for example, when you shoot a gun it "recoils". It does not "kickback", a Marine would know that. Marines do not say HUA. They yell Oorah. These are fairly minor issues but they do become annoying after awhile. Everything else kept me listening. Loved the depth and descriptions.

Exciting but... religion.
I did enjoy the premise of this book, and it was exciting, but I got really fed up with the Christian stuff. Angels, demons, preachers etc can all make for great fantasy, but this is just a bit keen on the Christian message, which makes these angels just too earnestly good.

genuinely surprising
came for rc bray left loving this new series. extremely well designed storyline. the firearm mechanics are a bit meh but passable dozens of shocking reveal that you were sure you had figured out but hadn't. coming from an atheist author did a great job of making the religious aspects neutral. read/listened to about 300 novels at this point and for quality of story and writing this is easily in my top 5.

Engaging Story and RC Bray
This is the first new story I have found in a while that I really enjoyed. And RC Bray makes everything better.

Angels and Demons, well - Ash Angels and Dreads
Good story arc, looking forward to the next book. Interesting take on afterlife/angel/demon/ (not to give too much away) a family lore.
good character and story development and portrayal. R.C Bray has an easy listening voice (not quite raspy/ med deep), good pace.

A move from sci fi to quasi zombies
Wasn’t sure I was going to like this change but RC Bray just made it a silky smooth ride - hooked from the start to end - and now onto book 2 - I want more

What a find!
Just by random I thought I’d have a listen. Couldn’t stop. Very good. Like a drama action version of Paulo Coelho. Loved the lore and the story travelled well. Well done. Thank you for writing it.

fantastic unique take on angels
in general, loved it. Some parts left me dubious whether I wanted to continue such as overwhelming bureaucracy and young earth tropes but I came to enjoy the bureaucratic plodding as the running joke it was and able to ignore the young earth literalism for the sake of the story.
r.c. bray, as usual, was fantastic.
