Publisher's Summary

Private investigator and World War II veteran Aloysius Archer heads to Los Angeles, the city where dreams are made and shattered, and is ensnared in a lethal case in this latest thriller in #1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci’s Nero Award-winning series.

It’s the eve of 1953, and Aloysius Archer is in Los Angeles to ring in the New Year with an old friend, aspiring actress Liberty Callahan, when their evening is interrupted by an acquaintance of Callahan’s: Eleanor Lamb, a screenwriter in dire straits.

After a series of increasingly chilling events—mysterious phone calls, the same blue car loitering outside her house, and a bloody knife left in her sink—Eleanor fears that her life is in danger, and she wants to hire Archer to look into the matter. Archer suspects that Eleanor knows more than she’s saying, but before he can officially take on her case, a dead body turns up inside of Eleanor’s home . . . and Eleanor herself disappears.

Missing client or not, Archer is dead set on finding both the murderer and Eleanor. With the help of Callahan and his partner Willie Dash, he launches an investigation that will take him from mob-ridden Las Vegas to the glamorous world of Hollywood to the darkest corners of Los Angeles—a city in which beautiful faces are attached to cutthroat schemers, where the cops can be more corrupt than the criminals . . . and where the powerful people responsible for his client’s disappearance will kill without a moment’s hesitation if they catch Archer on their trail.

Wow! Old Hollywood at it’s peak…

I really enjoy the Archer series. I won’t say too much as Audible seems to be monitoring/scrutinizing posts very closely. I’m not sure why, even the 5 star reviews that are 100% positive. Go figure …

Anyway, this book and series are excellent as it appears everything written by David Baldacci these days are. This series takes place in the late 1950’s. Everything is dated for that time period and although I didn’t make my debut until a few years later much is still relevant to my generation. For me this adds to the entertainment value.
This book is complicated with an ever changing plot. It is fast paced and has plenty of action. In just 3 books Archer has come a long way. I look forward to many more.

Edoardo Ballerini does a phenomenal job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Very sorry for this purchase!

No story line. Political and WOKE opinions. Incorrect Las Vegas history and old Hollywood stories. I don’t need the author’s ideas, philosophy or opinions. I needed a good read and this was not. A waste of money and time and I couldn’t finish it.
First time I’ve ever reviewed a book.

Terrible ending! So hated the ending!

Don't read this as is a total spoiler. I think the book needs to be released this year wth a good ending. Ending ruined the book for me, sorry to be sentimental but after so much build up to a good ending after three stories , ends in disaster. sucked big time ending. WTF David! Anyway. My 2 sense . Reg

I Liked it a lot

When I saw it was another Archer novel I honestly thought “oh brother. Do I really want to buy this?” That entire genre is not my favorite. The long descriptions. The cheesy quips. It is a bit tedious to me. BUT, i took a chance and I loved this book! I could not guess what was happening until Archer discovered it. Even at the end. One or two F bombs, but otherwise clean. I buy every book this guy writes. He can hook me in unlike most authors I read. Except for Brandon Sanderson there isn’t an author I like better!

Painful

This was painful to listen to, due to the extreme detail of the color the roses are, eye color, what the room looked like. How about a little excitement, more action, something to get and keep your attention. Could have been shorter by at least 3 hrs due to filler lines and quotes. Don’t waste a credit like I did.

Narration

I have over 250 titles in my library and have never written a review. This book, however, deserves a big zero because of the narration. The voices are totally unrealistic and grating. Be sure and listen to a sample before buying.

Disappointment

I’ve listened to half of his books and have loved them, but this was a letdown.

I love Archer!

I love the series with Archer. Interesting story, kept me wondering what was going to happen. All the characters were well rounded. Looking forward to the next book. I need to know Archer's future shenanigans!
