Publisher's Summary

Four complete books of explosive, military sci-fi action complete the entire first arc of the best-selling Drop Trooper series.

Go to war or go to jail. For small-time street hustler Cam Alvarez, the choice is simple....

He has no family, no friends, no place in the world...nothing to lose. When his latest con results in the death of a cartel hit man, Cam opts to join the Marines and leave Earth to fight a vicious alien enemy.

Drafted into the Marine Drop-Troopers, Cam discovers there’s one thing he’s even better at than running street-con games, and that’s killing the enemy. Wrapped in an armored battlesuit, Cam finds purpose amid the horror and destruction of the war, and the opportunity for a new sort of friends and family...if he can break the habits of a life spent alone, trusting no one.

And if he can survive....

Of you’re a fan of Galaxy’s Edge, Buy This.

In all honesty I wasn’t expecting what Rick Partlow delivered in these 4 books. I was hooked by the 3rd chapter and by the end I was checking how much time was left and wishing I just had a little more time of this story. Yes there are 2 more books after this, both of which I already purchased.
I’m a veteran and even in Mil Science Fiction there are a few ways to get it right and a whole lotta ways to get it wrong. Rick got it right. Every single time. I can’t say enough good things about his writing taken, his skill, his mastery of his tradecraft within this genre. I will just say that the enjoyment I experienced listening to to these 4 books equaled anything I experienced reading Galaxy’s Edge and I have an affinity for those books because 2 is the authors are former Army Rangers. RLTW.
If you are a Military Sci-Fy fan, I cannot imagine you not thoroughly and completely enjoying Rick Partlow’s work. Mentally observing Cam’s evolution from a civilian to a Private and other rank was real. His struggles with losing soldiers, I mean Marines was authentic. The Marines he served with remind me of soldiers I’ve led. It really is that good. Worth every bit of 10 credits, one credit was the best thing since free ice cream on International Ice Cream Day.
Thank you Rick.
As always forgive my misspellings, I blame my two rebellious thumbs.

Book One, Quite Good. The Rest, Not Good.

Book one is actually quite good. The premise is interesting and there’s some character development and a coherent plot. The action is done well too. However, books 2-4 are awful. The writing is as pedestrian as it gets, the main protagonist gets dumber and less streetwise, the story becomes more and more repetitive, and the writing and grammar borders on atrocious.
In someone’s review they state that this series is “as good as Galaxy’s Edge”. Sorry, fellow reviewer, but you’re plain wrong. I’m fact, that’s an epic insult to Jason Anspach and Nick Cole.

If you're 14yrs old, good choice

Basic training for the marine corps, but using ray-guns. Maybe i would have liked it when I was 14yrs old, but back then I was reading Dune and 2001 Space O and the Foundation Series .... so maybe I would not. Books okay for some, but perhaps not so for adults.

Are you kidding me!

I realize there are only 400 to 500 reviews, but the reviews gave it a 4.7 so I thought I’d give it try. Found out they must be bogus! This book has no storyline, he uses word to describe things just to use words “making absolutely no sense at all” I guess as a filler. I kept hitting reverse to make sure I was hearing it correctly, I was!
I am unable to give the narrator a review because I feel sorry for him.
My review is 0.99 because l’m hoping they save a tree and didn’t make a paper copy!

Meh

I bought the full 4 books bundle with a discounted deal, and found it a bit interesting but not like the top writers such as John Scalzi or Jeremy Robinson; so I kept semi-listening to it without being fully focused.
The story has some good plots but with too much additional nonsense.

If the narrator was not talking so fast like he was getting paid by word counts, I would give him a 4 star. I had so slow down the play to 0.9x to make it more tolerable.

Wow. The author has a new fan!

I came to Drop Trooper via a recommendation from a Galaxy’s Edge message board. I really enjoyed this set of books. The character development was spot on. The pacing very quick. The only improve I would have is that there was so much crammed into each minute of the books so that these four books could have easily been six books. The author did a great job. I’m off now to read/listen to book 5!

marines in space

it's not too bad. main character is likable. it honestly sounds like this story is therapy for the authors own PTSD. lots of insight to issues of combat.
lots of combat.
also it sounds like these maybe a lot of marine Legends put into a new setting. I listened to the whole thing. I likely won't listen again but I don't regret listening.

VERY GOOD LISTEN

Good story. As a former Marine, it took me awhile to get past the 'trooper' nomenclature. Once that was done it was a fine listen. Well done military sci-fi. Well worth the price.

Interesting Series

I can't equate any of fighting to my time in 'Nam but the feelings & thinking involved are what I felt a lot. Please read these books and try to ignore the bullshit and the superior thoughts. W/o triggering my PTSD I read and understood where Alverez stood!

“The only easy day was yesterday. The only good time was last time”

A great military sci-fi book. Tons of action, all really well done and hard fought. Great stories, made even better by them all being in 1 book (only 1 credit!) and they all link really well together.
Great narration too with good pacing and character voices.
Would definitely listen to anything by author or narrator again!
This is my honest opinion on a free review copy.

Sleepless nights due to this book

Hooked from the offset! Non-stop action from the outset. Well worth a credit to have all 4 books in a single hit. Bit of a blessing really as I couldn’t stop listening once I had started. This has a good story arc and the author isn’t afraid to break tradition with some of the characters to keep the story fresh. Stop reading and buy it already!

As a disclaimer and to be honest and open. I was given a free credit for this specific book. I already had the first book in my library which I really enjoyed, but for the extra 3 books I said yes. Needless to say I wasn’t disappointed. This review is unbiased.

Very generic space war book

Pretty boring overall, not much suspense or variation. Not worth the time listening to. Not much happens.

Great Boxset

This is a great set of audios, the only gripe is the 1st half of the first audio where it took me a while to get into it.
However Partloq writes well and your soon captured by his prose and joined with the great talents of JPC doing the audio this is a great buy.
Would like to hear more from the author and this world so dhall be keeping an eye out for more.
I requested this audio and have decided to leave my thoughts for everyone to see.

Classic space war Sci-Fi

Much in the line of Starship Troopers and The Forever War, Drop Trooper provides an excellent addition to the genre.

in the military some things stay the same

it's amazing how after losing an entire ship they could still find folding chairs.
this book proves that no matter how hard a war is that bureaucracy will always win.

A story of personal development mostly

Unfortunately the sci fi was mostly secondary to the mc going through personal and professional development.
The background war was interesting but very few thrills amongst the cliche struggles of egotistical human in fighting.
Combat sequences were good.

Couldn't get past chapter 16

If you like every fight described blow by blow, then you might like this... I couldn't get past chapter 16. Maybe it get's better, I'll never know. Narrator is no RC Bray and story is quite bland, no surprises.

Finally a sensible sci-fi military series

Far too many of the sci-fi mil series I've attempted in the last few years left me cold. It is not easy to build a solid and consistent setting, populated by realistic , raw and fallible characters, and weave a well-paced narrative.

Drop Troopers is a series that nails all of that.
