Publisher's Summary

Reese Eddings has enough to do just keeping her rattletrap merchant vessel, the TMS Earthrise, profitable enough to pay food for herself and her micro-crew. So when a mysterious benefactor from her past shows up demanding she rescue a man from slavers, her first reaction is to say "NO!" And then to remember that she sort of promised to repay the loan. But she doesn't remember signing up to tangle with pirates and slavers over a space elf prince…

great story, odd choice

I love this book, but I had a hard time listening to it because of the narrator. I find it off putting when a story about a girl is narrated by a guy... especially a guy who sounds like he should be narrating is Zane Grey novel. His scratchy and weathered voice just doesn't fit with the space fantasy theme.

I couldn't get pass the first sentence.

Money wasted. I couldn't get pass the first sentence. The narrator gave me chills and not the good kind. He sounded like a creepier.
This might be a good story but I'll never know.

Narration faltered but thought-provoking story

Male narrator's voice for strong female protagonist sounded unpleasantly like a hoarse old man. Voices for other characters were distinctive and seemed to fit. Multi-culturAL story was interesting and engaging.

One of the best stories I've listened to this year

Any additional comments?

I'm a fan of many of Hogarth's books. While I enjoy reading them, I usually listen to them first. Her choices of voice actors makes listening to her books a delight. Daniel Dorse creates terrific voices, and uses them consistently. In addition, he understands her stories, and uses his narration to emphasize the points she is trying to make. Hogarth is excellent at describing different cultures through the relationships of characters in her books. While I may not always agree with her conclusions about culture and behavior, I always come away thinking more deeply about what she said. But she is not writing essays hidden in fiction. Her action and dialogue are wonderful, and the pacing of her stories draws you in. Highly recommended.

Disappointing. Unimaginative Story,Crappy Narrator

Bought for Audible. First off, the Narrator uses a voice for most of the book that is deliberately Scratchy and low, and takes FULL concentration to understand.

Second, story was garbage. Angry , man-hating "dark-skinned" woman with issues .
Characters were the cliche SCIFI tigris, centaurs, ect.
Wasted $9 and 3 hrs of my life I will never get back.

Worst performance EVER!!

I would give this a Negative 5 stars if possible! In general, if I don't have something nice to say, I just don't say anything! This performance sound snide and condescending from the FIRST sentence spoken!! I read the book, previously, and would rate it 3-4 stars. I thought the audio version would be pleasant to listen to while I went about my tasks about the house....Big NO, HECK NO, & NOT Gonna happen! Thank goodness I only paid $2.15 for it!!!!

Good story bad narration

The story takes a fun and novel approach to interspecies relationships. The narrator makes it difficult to listen, though, by whispering whenever he is not in character. He seems to have a good voice but does not use it.

A few improper tenses should have been corrected at editing.

Firefly Fans will love this!

Would you listen to Earthrise again? Why?

Finally a story that is fun, full of adventure, lots of crazy characters. Well, developed characters that win you over immediately and the way in which scenes are laid out makes us feel right at home with them all! Which is amazing seeing as how everything is happening in a futuristic other world of outer space. Haven't liked a new Sci-Fi story so much since Star Wars!!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Earthrise?

When the Eldridge discovered what the crystals really were.

What does Daniel Dorse bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I believe he brought out the depths and descriptions is such a vivid manner as though he were a grandfather sharing stories from his own past to his family.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and no. Yes because i was enjoying where it took me and no because it was a two day long read .

Any additional comments?

I really got to know the characters well by the end and only wished that Reese wasn't so combative. I liked her better when she was calmer.

Good story

I enjoyed the mix of characters, but had a hard time with the Captain. I wanted to give her a 'chill pill'.
Her complaints were voiced a little too frequently and she had too many emotional fits about the wrong things.
I wanted her to be smarter because she was The Captain. She missed the whole pirate/trap angle which she should have caught.
Otherwise, I did like the book and I will read the next one.

Earthrise

At first I found the narrator a little frustrating but more I listened the more I realised that his voice suited the story. The story is not complicated but was surprising pleasant to listen to. Although this type of story of an off beat crew that seems to constantly find themselves in situations that are dangerous to their well being, the writer has written in such a way that it is a fresh and intriguing. The balance between seriousness and humour is just right. If you don't want to listen to something heavy, I suggest you give this a try.
