Publisher's Summary
Penguin presents the audiobook edition of East of Croydon, written and read by Sue Perkins.
A few years ago I was asked if I'd like to make a documentary on the Mekong River, travelling from the vast delta in Vietnam to the remote and snowy peaks of Tibet.
Up until that point, the farthest east I'd been was Torremolinos, in the Costa Del Sol.
Here's the thing:
- I am scared of flying.
- I have zero practical skills.
- I can't survive if I am more than a three minute walk from a supermarket.
- For the last seven years I have suffered with crippling anxiety.
- I bolt when panicked.
- I cannot bear to witness humans or animals in distress.
- I have no ability to learn languages.
- I am a terrible hypochondriac.
- And I am no good with boats.
So I said yes.

A moving and funny read.
Really great writing and beautifully performed by the author. I would highly recommend if you are interested in learning more about an outsider perspective on asia, Sue Perkins or a very moving story.

P...ing your pants one minute, sobbing your heart out the next
Oh my lord what a listen!
Many many belly laughs equaled by many many tears
From her description of dreaming of bringing Rakki the street child home to the oh so familiar description of the passing of her dad, the tears I cried could start a new Ganges!
And the laughs came thick and fast ( the street mice chewing down on a pilfered power bar is only eclipsed by Simon the blessed miracle pig)
And all done with a self deprecating humour that, almost, hides a massive and formidable intellect
I defy you not to want Sue to be your best friend after listening to this!!

Liked Sue Perkins before, love her even more now. she made me laugh, she made me sad, and she is so painfully honest about herself. I will listen to this again at some point.

Just as great as the first one!
I was so happy to come across this book after enjoying Spectacles. Thoroughly enjoyed this and highly recommend it. I laughed out loud many times and was also touched by the honesty and raw-ness. Wonderful!

I love Sue
I do. I always have. I remember her TV debut alongside the equally delightful Mel and have watched everything they've done since (except bake off, sorry). Sue is a delightfully irregular yet familiar commentator on almost anything. Your friend, mother, daughter, favourite pundit, new observer, humorous participant. She brings a warmth, familiarity and tremendous wit to everything with a style that is completely natural. I love her. Completely. This is a raw, more vulnerable journey than most of her work and allows an insight into how imperfect she is, despite what our TV screens may suggest. And it's all the more interesting because of it. Add to that the wonderful journey she undertook and it's hard to foresee anyone being unable to gleen a great deal of satisfaction from this excellent production.

Loved it!
Sue Perkins achieves the most delightful balance and shifts between silliness, wit, sentiment and insight. I loved the raw emotion and brutal honesty. More please!

Please go on more adventures Sue!
I could listen to Sue talk all day, and I pretty much did for three. Be prepared to unexpectedly laugh out loud. People look at you funny. Be mindful that you may also cry. People also look at you funny if you have tears rolling down your face while doing the groceries. I loved every page and highly recommend Sue as an author, a TV presenter and a narrator. Huge fan.
