William "Wild Bill" Guarnere and Edward "Babe" Heffron were among the first paratroopers of the U.S. Army - members of an elite unit of the 101st Airborne Division called Easy Company. Arguably the bravest, most efficient, physically fit, and tight-knit group of soldiers the Army has ever produced, the unit was called upon for every high-risk operation of the war, including D-Day, Operation Market Garden in Holland, the Battle of the Bulge, and the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden.

Publisher's Summary
Sgt. Don Malarkey takes us not only into the battles fought from Normandy to Germany, but into the heart and mind of a soldier who beat the odds to become an elite paratrooper and lost his best friend during the nightmarish engagement at Bastogne.
Drafted in 1942, Malarkey arrived at Toccoa Camp in Georgia and was one of six soldiers who earned their Eagle wings and went to England in 1943 to provide ground cover for the largest amphibious military attack in history: Operation Overlord.
In the darkness of D-Day morning, Malarkey parachuted into France and, within days, was awarded a Bronze Star for his heroism in battle. He fought for 23 days in Normandy, nearly 80 in Holland, 39 in Bastogne, and nearly 30 more in and near Haguenau, France, and the Ruhr pocket in Germany.
This is his dramatic tale of those bloody days fighting his way from the shores of France to the heartland of Germany, and the epic story of how an adventurous kid from Oregon became a leader of men.

Solid American Greatness
I've read through nearly all the materials surrounding Easy Company and this account is fantastic for fellow enthusiasts as well as people new to the story of this remarkable company. Malarkey and Welch make sure they explain everything they encountered as if the user has NOT seen the HBO miniseries or read other books, but there is also a great deal of the personal stories and perspectives of Don Malarkey that make it a valuable point of view for those that had read many of the other memoirs. Lloyd does a great job reading the story with expression and clarity. Malarkey and Welch begin the recount at a dramatic moment - in the frozen woods near Bastone and in riveting detail, describe the harsh conditions of life on the front line. Then they backtrack to the beginning of Malarkey's life and provide a colorful view into prewar America on the rural west coast (Oregon). From there the story progresses linearly through the prewar years, the attack on Pearl Harbor, basic training, crossing the pond, life in the UK, D-Day, Market Garden, Bastone, The Eagles Nest, the end of the war and post war life. What you come away with is a sense of awe about the WWII generation and the men that fought desperately, won and got on with their lives. I really wish I could meet Don Malarkey, but given I probably will not, this was an invaluable substitute and I am so glad I listened to it.

I AM SO PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN
If ever you find yourself disappointed in our great country listen to the book "EASY COMPANY SOLDIER". UNABRIDGED) It is the most heartwarming true story I have ever listened to. After completing the listen, I realize how lucky I am to be an American. I also realized how much our soldiers gave and continue to give to our great nation without expecting anything in return.
It is a story about the sadness of war, and how one person survived it. The book describes in detail the horrors he experienced. There is no movie that could come close to Don Malarkey's experiences. If I could give this listen more than five stars, I would rate it over a thousand stars for its honesty. I'm sure I will listen to it again and again.
EASY COMPANY SOLDIER IS BRILLIANT.
Thanks for reading my review PLEASE READ IT. YOU WILL BE HAPPY YOU DID.

Another remarkable Easy Company story
This is my 3rd Easy Company/Band of Brothers book and I cannot say enough good things about it. I really like Sargeant Don Malarkey and his account of his life and being a World War II paratrooper. Before I listened to Band of Brothers I never realized just how long the paratroopers might be on the ground after they parachute into dangerous battles and situations. I remember seeing the movie "The Longest Day" about D-Day where paratroopers were such an integral part of the offensive, but I didn't make that connection.
I like the way this is written and narrated. I'll be listening to more books about Easy Company, D-Day, and World War II. I plan to watch the "Band of Brothers" miniseries as well as "Saving Private Ryan", neither of which I've seen.
I would highly recommend this, but maybe you should read or listen to "Band of Brothers" first.

Is there anything you would change about this book?
err, the narrator. He made the story feel cheesy. My husband put it best: "I keep waiting for him to try and sell me something." Distracting.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved hearing a more in-depth part of the Easy Company experience.

War is worse then hell.
This book gives rich detail on being a Private joining the Army. Training to be a paratrooper, actually going to war and fighting to get back to the Airborne units after D-Day and freezing in the Battle of the Bulge--all these experiences made me wonder why we go to war in the first place. To say "war is hell" is a oomplete understatement--made by a General.

Any biography/ narrative involving first hand WWII soldiers is a winner. You can’t go wrong. Most people are familiar with “Band of Brothers” and Sgt. Band of Brothers
For anyone who has read Stephen Ambrose' classic Band of Brothers this book offers little in the way of new material but, it does offer updates from the HBO series. A few of the scenes are not correct. The story is still nonetheless a good tale of life as an airborne trooper & the courage it took to do something that had never been done before. I couldn't do it now nevermind back then with a 100lb pack on your back & a 60lb mortar hanging from my legs. Due to the serious guts it took to do most of what he does I can forgive the John Wayne style quotes. In today's world he would be diagnosed with PTSD but because his generation, men talking about feelings or crying was a sign of weakness or whining, it comes as no surprise that alcohol was the medication of choice.
If you haven't read the books of seen the mini series then I highly recommend this book

Good read for Easy Company History
At times I felt this was a retelling of the events of Band of Brothers, but with a lot of Marlarkey's take on events, but that aside, this is a very well done account of his experiences in war. Some of the things they correct about the series is interesting in itself, like how he cannot understand why they change where the Ameican fighting for the Germans was born. The insight into the depth of his friendship with Muck was also very well laid out and moving. Very enjoyable book.
