Publisher's Summary

For nearly two decades, Scott Jurek has been a dominant force - and darling - in the grueling and growing sport of ultrarunning. In 1999, as a complete unknown, he took the lead of the Western States Endurance Run, a 100-mile traverse over the old Gold Rush trails of the California Sierra Nevada. He won that race seven years in a row, setting a course record along the way. Twice he won the Badwater Ultramarathon, a 135-mile “jaunt” through Death Valley. Recently he set an American record of 165.7 miles in 24 hours - six and a half marathons in one day. And he was one of the elite runners who traveled to Mexico to run with the Tarahumara Indians, as profiled in the bestseller Born to Run. His accomplishments are nothing short of extraordinary, but that he has achieved all of this on a plant-based diet makes his story all the more so.

In Eat and Run, Scott Jurek opens up about his life and career - as an elite athlete and a vegan - and inspires runners at every level. From his Midwestern childhood hunting, fishing, and cooking for his meat-and-potatoes family, to his early beginnings in running (he hated it), to his slow transition to ultrarunning and veganism, to his world-spanning, record-breaking races, Scott’s story shows the power of an iron will and blows apart all the stereotypes of what athletes should eat to fuel optimal performance. Chock-full of incredible, on-the-brink stories of endurance and competition, fascinating science, and accessible practical advice - including his own favorite plant-based recipes - Eat and Run will motivate everyone to “go the distance”, whether that means getting out for that first run, expanding your food horizons, or simply exploring the limits of your own potential.

Couldn't Make it Through This One

I really wanted to enjoy and learn from this book. I found myself struggling to keep myself from fast forwarding through sections. I also found Scott's narration to be very disconnected and flat. He's one of the greats, if not the greatest, no question about that though.

Grateful for this Greatness...

I appreciate Scott Jurek telling his story. No better time for me to have gained this knowledge. If you've dealt with a tough childhood and found solice in movement and challenging yourself physically, this is for you. If you were drawn into nature or grew up with an appreciation for it this also could be for you. Meditation isn't only found in stillness.

Wonderful listen for this newer runner

Loved hearing Scott’s story and grabbed a lot of inspiration and encouragement from it. I have to admit, I’m so far committed to my animal protein, but I’ll give a few recipes a try or cycle some plant-focused months to see how it works on my training.

My only fuss: I wish the pdf had some of his little workout tips that came right before the recipes at the end of each section! Loved those and would love to have a handy reference. I guess I’ll have to tough it out and relisten where I can take notes. :-)

Eating Well = Running Well

Steve offers lots of valuable information on the subject and I plan to read it again as I develop into a stronger, fitter runner. Food is definitely medicine. Plus Scott Jurek's narration made the reading sing and what a difference that made too.

First listen of many, I suspect.

I’m not sure Scott has any particular interest in people looking up to him… but I found his story inspiring and moving, and certainly aspire to his approach to food, body, mind, and the earth.

With regard to the book, it’s well written and well narrated, and is well worth reading or listening to. 5 Stars.

Interesting and sad

I wish there weren’t the expletives as I was listening around my children, but beyond that. I found it incredible. The end was so sad though.
