Darkness falls.... Despair abounds.... Evil reigns….

Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empire. Now Eragon must travel to Ellesméra, land of the elves, for further training in magic and swordsmanship, the vital skills of the Dragon Rider. It is the journey of a lifetime, filled with awe-inspiring new places and people, each day a fresh adventure. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and Eragon isn't sure whom he can trust.

Poor narrating

What disappointed you about Eldest - Part One?

The narrator. The story is brilliant!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Saphira, but the Narrator killed her voice. It is supposed to be nice and pleasant sounding voice yet he gives her a gravely throat cancer voice which made me cringe every time she had a vocal line.

Would you be willing to try another one of Gerrard Doyle’s performances?

No!!

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Eldest - Part One?

N/a

Dragon voices

Why does he make the dragon characters sound like they’re big, unintelligent, chain smoking bruts? Really distracting

Great but

This is a great title and story but I have one piece of criticism. I imagined that Saphira sound like a calm woman, not like a chainsmoker

My god the narrator is bad at dragon voices

More dragons = more awful accents. It’s just too gravelly to listen to comfortably. It’s a shame because his other accents are okay, but he’s overcommitted to an awful idea here

Chapters do not match

The chapters in the audiobook are a mess. They need to be reorganised. One chapter can contain two or three chapters with the last one being cut off and carrying onto the next ‘chapter’ according to audible.

Was annoying trying to sort it out while listening to it in between reads as I have the physical copy of the book.

Other than that, decent book. Just fix the chapter issues.

Child hood

The Inheritance cycle is where my love of the fantasy genre comes from and each book when I read them I could not put down. I have listened to them all probably 5 times on top of this as well, Gerrard Doyle’s voice is one from my childhood.

Again the Saphira's voice

As with the first book it is great! But again the voice for Saphira just doesn't fit.

Alright, will listen again

Well, i can say its all well read apart from the voices of the dragons and the werecats, in my opinion they are jarring and ugly where they should be powerful and impressive, it's akin to a tiger trying to roar but instead grunting like a pig. Once one gets used to that its perfectly brilliant!

Loved it

One of my favourite young adulthood-hood books, I felt so much nostalgia and eloquently read.

Baskerville Book Reviews

Eldest picks up right where Eragon left off. As events unfold quickly for Eragon at the start of the book, the majority of the story is rather slow-paced. Eragon and Saphira continue their education as dragon and rider while learning more about the culture of the elves.

The story alternates between Roran and Eragon every few fapters, giving you something exciting to focus on. One thing that always annoyed me while reading this book many years ago, was how and when the chapters end. They often end on a cliffhanger, leaving you desperately wanting to catch up with the character you just read while trying to focus on the current protagonists’ story.

Both Eragon and Roran are built upon as characters and grow as people while the story progresses, giving book 2 another epic journey. Paolini did a nice job of bringing Eragon and Roran’s journey’s together at the finale to set up book 3. Sadly, I don’t have the audiobook for book 3, though this has just left me hyped for the opportunity to read it again.

Much of what I have to say about the narration was covered in my Eragon review. There were 2 – 3 instances where music was played during a scene or character intro. I just found it obnoxious since it was done only a few times and seemingly came out of nowhere.

Overall, I didn’t enjoy Eldest as much as I enjoyed listening to Eragon. The scene’s where Eragon is with the elves just bored me and left me uninterested. When the main character goes from traveling across the known world to sitting in a forest, it’s easy to see why. I do still recommend this audiobook for the same reasons I recommended Eragon. The convenience above all, though the name pronunciations are also a huge benefit.

Cookie dragon

The dragon voices are incredibly annoying, so much so that I had to stop listening to books that I adore. Do not buy this audio book! It will ruin the story, but the book or find one read by someone else

Great story; terrible narration.

the books are good. please don't let this dissuade you from the books:
This narrator is a joke. his dragon is, as someone said, a cookie monster interpretation. he mispronounced so many words it jolts the listener out of the mood. like 'trebuchet' does not have a hard T at the end!
alas that there is no other narrator for these books on Audible.

Saphirra's voice was gravely Yoda

got a handful of minutes in before I had to stop, usually I love this series and I'd deal with bad narration for the story, but Saphirra sounds like a gravely version of Yoda and by her second line I was completely done. I understand that some people prefer 'a proper dragon voice' but I'd always imagined her with a female voice, so it was a bit of a shock when I heard her speak 😂 otherwise, great story

Brilliant 2nd installment in the series

As in the first book the dragon's voices are irritating but the story and performance of all other characters is wonderful. I do wish they would re-record the dragon's parts but overall I love the books and am enjoying the audiobooks

Terrible Narrator

The book is amazing, great story and plot. However the narrator dissuades you from reading. The dragon sounds awful and so many words are mispronounced. Book one narrator was great but he hadn’t narrated a full version of book 2. Overall great book but awful narrator

could have been good if an editor had been able to massively trim this work but regrettably its just another very formulaic novel with very few surprises along a very predictable line overly long with to much squeezed in for the sake of it glad its over not going to bother with the rest
