In The Archer we meet Tetsuya, a man once famous for his prodigious gift with a bow and arrow but who has since retired from public life, and the boy who comes searching for him. The boy has many questions, and in answering them Tetsuya illustrates the way of the bow and the tenets of a meaningful life. Paulo Coelho's story suggests that living without a connection between action and soul cannot fulfill, that a life constricted by fear of rejection or failure is not a life worth living.

On the occasion of the centenary of Mata Hari's execution for espionage in 1917, Paulo Coelho reconsiders her life and character in a fictional memoir. In a series of letters written from prison on the eve of her death, Mata Hari reflects on the choices she has made to always pursue her own truth - from her childhood in a small Dutch town to unhappy years as the wife of an alcoholic diplomat in Java to her calculated and self-fashioned rise to celebrity in Paris and across Europe as an exotic dancer.

Eventually, Maria's despairing view of love is put to the test when she meets a handsome young painter. In this odyssey of self-discovery, Maria has to choose between pursuing a path of darkness, 'sexual pleasure for its own sake', or risking everything to find her own 'inner light' and the possibility of sacred sex, sex in the context of love.

Good start - became boring.
I enjoyed the first chapters of this book and rather liked the narrators. I found the concept interesting but it was as if Paulo Coelho ran out of inspiration and decided to write about sexual fantasy. I found some of it fairly nauseating and otherwise was simply bored. I really wanted the book to end. I would not really recommend this book.

This is best book i have read in many years, it fills you up, energizes and gives answers. I am in love with the story and Coelho's talent to express the magic of love, desire and search for inner harmony in his unique and captivating way. The story touches, brings all of the inner hidden desires and thoughts to the surfaces and acts as a mirror by looking at which you see a reflection...

Good book. Bad choice on the reader.
I like Paulo Coelho a lot, but didn't like the reader of this book. Very think and pompous accent. He gave a sense of distance from the character. Perhaps if it would have been a woman... The story is very interesting from the main characters point of view about sex, sexuality and prostitution.

Interesting but unrealistic love story
I can see why the story is compared to a fairy tale. I prefer Veronica decides to die. The dark side the human experience isn't explored in this story leaving it a little unsatisfying. As always Coelho asks some thought provoking questions. This is a good read but not, in my opinion, his best work.

Story
The Witch of Portobello is the story of a mysterious woman named Athena, told by the many who knew her well - or hardly at all. Like The Alchemist, The Witch of Portobello is the kind of story that will transform the way listeners think about love, passion, joy, and sacrifice.

Story
Kemal, scion of one of the city's wealthiest families, is about to become engaged to Sibel, daughter of another prominent family, when he encounters Füsun, a beautiful shopgirl and a distant relation. Once the long-lost cousins violate the code of virginity, a rift begins to open between Kemal and the world of the Westernized Istanbul bourgeosie - a world, as he lovingly describes it, with opulent parties and clubs, society gossip, picnics, and mansions on the Bosphorus, infused with the melancholy of decay.
