Publisher's Summary

Life was easier when rival detectives Quaid Valor and Aslan Doyle kept to their own sides of the building. They could forget the one glorious night they’d shared and move on.

But when Aslan is called to a homicide and discovers one of the victims has a personal history with Quaid, he knows a confrontation is inevitable.

When news about the case spreads, Quaid can’t help but get involved. He wants answers; if not for himself, then for the families of the victims.

Joining Aslan and his partner, Quaid uncovers more than he bargained for—too many secrets and lies in a case that is dangerously personal.

Plus, the more time he spends with Aslan, the harder it is for Quaid to ignore his attraction to the playboy detective.

Aslan, who doesn’t believe in repeats, can’t seem to stop flirting with the grumpy MPU detective, and his rules go out the window as they’re drawn deeper into the case.

But what happens when one more night turns to two, and two turns into three?

Does Quaid want to risk his heart again?

Has Aslan developed feelings?

Can they put a stop to their fun and walk away?

Do they want to?

The Valor and Doyle mysteries are a same-couple ongoing series and should be enjoyed in order. The main mystery plot of each book will be resolved within the story, but there are elements that are overarching throughout the series.

Riveting!

Nicki James is one brilliant writer. She kept me guessing and second guessing. The story captured me from the very intense prologue up until the very end of the story. Masterful.

Nick J Russo, he has outdone himself just on that prologue performance alone.

I can’t wait for more. 🤩

Overall a good gay fiction novel

I did enjoy this book for the most part but there were some moments where the author prose was a little bit predictable and contrived. especially the two gay characters which were stereotypes. perhaps if these two characters were a little more human and fleshed out and not so obvious. I wish the characters had a little bit more depth and uniqueness to them. I did not like the narrator's acting some of the time because it was too dramatic and too over the top sometimes. but again overall a good book.

Love overcomes everything

I just love listening to Nick perform Nicky's words. This is one of those great author and writer combos. Aslan and Quaid are just some of the best written MCs. This new universe she's created with this series is very well written. The world building has been incredible, I can just visualize the world these two live in. As always Nicky's characters are well thought out and serve a purpose to the progression of the story and it's arc. She gives Nick lots of great details to work with, when he is performing her fabulous words. A few disclaimers, if you've not read any of this series (or listened to it) you need to. Each book in the series builds on the previous one and characters carry over from each previous book. That being said I highly recommend listening to Nick narrate this book and series. Can't wait to get my hands on the next book in the series.

Loved this one! Aslan figuring out he might not just be able to move on, and Quaid being his usual vulnerable self hidden behind a scowl.

A seriously great follow up👌🏼

Elusive Relations is a seriously great follow up, the professional and personal relationship between Quaid and Aslan intensifies and deepens as both realize their feelings are more than either of them expected. Miscommunication, personal bagage and the weight of their current case, to Quaid very personal, blur their ignited, now sparkling relationship. But as time goes by, they are having trouble ignoring and denying what is really going on between them...

The plot in this book is even more thrilling as in the first, and very well done. The side characters are well outlined, and Nick Russo is yet again performing an amazing voice acting, from airhead Dylan to uptight female principal and all the other side characters(there are many!), to the intimate steamy scenes with only Quaid and Aslan. So well done💪🏼

I can't wait to read the next one!

Amazing

I loved this book! Nick J Russo is a brilliant narrator and brought this story to life perfectly. Quaid and Aslan are once again working together which makes it harder and harder for them to ignore their growing attraction. I loved this book as they're forced to face their feelings even if they're still unsure. Nicky James is doing a brilliant job with these two and I cannot wait for the next book.

Fantastic listen.

Nick J Russo always gives a captivating performance and this audio is no exception. I binge listened to the first 9 hrs and only stopped as my ear was tender from my ear buds. Each and every character was easily distinguishable from the others and Nick J Russo never faulted throughout the entire audio maintaining the tone and cadence to the very end.
This was a binge worthy listen that had me hooked from the very start to the jaw dropping final line. A great cast of characters combined with an intriguing plot blended together perfectly by the story telling ability of Nicky James makes for a remarkable experience.

Simply fabulous

Nothing Nicky James writes could ever be described as run-of-the-mill. She continually surprises and enthrals me with her fabulous writing and unique storylines. So memorable are her characters that I remember each and every one of them with affection long after finishing her books. I’ve already returned for comfort re-reads/re-listens of much of her work despite having only discovered her in the past year and I’ve devoured her entire backlist with relish. There’s nothing bland about this talented lady’s writing - it’s gritty and has totally commanded my attention. I’m in awe of the fascinating and diverse subjects she has so far covered with such obvious attention to research detail.

In this instalment of Nicky James’s Valor and Doyle series there is a violent attack on two men to investigate which leads to the death of one of them, with the other left clinging to life in ICU for many weeks. It’s not in Valor’s normal remit as he is a detective in the Missing Persons Unit, but the crime is personal to him and he therefore sets out to persuade homicide detective, Aslan Doyle, and his partner, Torin Fox, to allow him to join forces with them and consult using his insider knowledge of one of the victims in his argument to their compliance. Before the end of Elusive Relations is reached we are also given a hint that a MPU cold case is to be re-opened. I really hoped for this and am salivating with anticipation.

It’s difficult to write a review of an ongoing series without giving away spoilers. I know there are some who prefer to wait for completion and then read or listen back-to-back… myself included generally - so it’s these people I’m considering by not giving too much of the story away. However, so addictive is this series and the developing attraction between Nicky James’s two fabulous detectives that I simply couldn’t wait for the series to be completed and I had to jump in, to both read and listen as soon as the books and audio books were released. Do yourself a favour, if you love a clever mystery with many twists and turns, fabulous writing, two perfectly imperfect men who are poles apart but who just can’t stay away from each other then you’ve found the perfect series.

Nick Russo does a fabulous job with the narration of this book. His portrayal of Doyle’s partner, Torin Fox, stands out in particular; I can totally see this Jack-the-lad character in my mind’s eye… cocky and sure of himself he throws every obstacle in the way of Valor’s attempts to join their team. He’s also astonished to see that his normally promiscuous partner, Doyle, is apparently falling hard for their MPU nemesis. I really loved Torin and thought Nick Russo totally nailed him. I again found the fact that he didn’t give Valor and Doyle’s voices enough differences to distinguish between them a slight problem. But so slight that I adapted and listened carefully; the more upbeat, flirty tone he gave to Doyle helped when the two were in conversation. Also, there are dialogue tags, so my enjoyment wasn’t spoilt. And as I’m now more used to the differences in these two detectives simply from Nicky James’s description and development of them I’m not marking Nick Russo down.

Never have I waited with so much anticipation for the next book in an ongoing series. Quaid Valor and Aslan Doyle have carved a place in my heart and I can hardly wait to see where the author takes them on their journey. Highly recommended.

Love this series

Second book in the series and it isn't a standalone, you need to read/listen to it in order.
Quaid and Aslan, two lovely character. Opposites attract, low on erotica but high on emotions.
The narrator just perfect, I like listening to his narrations.
Recommend it! Can't wait the next one.

A compelling murder mystery and blossoming romance

Nick Russo's fantastic narration brought me right back into Quaid and Aslan's orbit with another thrilling mystery to solve, this time with a much more personal connection. I loved following along on the clue-finding missions, witness testimonials and late night think sessions as Quaid, Torin, and Aslan struggled to link the pieces together and figure out what motivated this killer. I genuinely could not have guessed who the killer was until the very end, and if anything that made it more exciting for me to experience every dead end and suspect crossed off the list. Along the way, I was delighted to see Aslan and Quaid's relationship take another turn for the steamy (and oh. my. god. did the two of them get steamy). It really is a shame that the two of them were so dang stubborn, because had it been up to me they would have been dating after that first epic night together. Thankfully Aslan and Quaid did start to realize that their feelings went much deeper than a no-strings hookup, and can I just say that it was so satisfying to see their relationship soften with flirting, silly jokes, and heartfelt conversations. Don't get me wrong--Quaid could still be downright prickly at times, but it was so cute to see all the little ways Aslan made him crack a grin (and even cuter to know how proud Aslan was of making it happen). The two of them made me swoon, and had it not been for the pressing investigation I was incredibly curious about, I would have happily basked in their growing romance without a care in the world. I was actually pleasantly surprised by how much romance there was in this story given how much action and suspense was packed in alongside it, but I should have known I could count on Nicky James to bring the best of both genres. That absolute bombshell of a reveal at the end has me SO desperate to see what happens next in Quaid and Aslan's lives, and I already know it's going to be a long wait to find out more about what it all means.

**I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

Can’t go wrong with this one

Story: there was never a Nicky James book that I didn’t love. This one is no exception. I must say these two MCs are one of my favorite couples, warts, dents and all. And the story? Top notch!
Narration: good as always. Nick J. Russo definitely knows how it’s done.

Total satisfaction by writer and narrator!

That huskiness in the voice of Nick J Russo,....sigh!
With just the right amount of warmth, passion, aggression in that voice he makes this story truly come alive.
Aslan and Quaid sound delicious.

My heart is warm and my smile is huge.
Book 2 has yet another complex crime for Aslan and Quaid to solve while killing us with
their attempts to stay away from their feelings.

While I really enjoy the workings solving the horrible crimes by these two detectives
it's their chemistry that is the star here. 2 alpha males, totally opposite in character
trying to stay away from each other, but, it's really not working.
They are rivals from different departments having to work together, yet after a long day
chasing clues, when they are alone, the passion cannot be held back.

There are so many layers to the mysteries in this series, it is so well written that you
cannot help but be held hostage by the words. A beautifully crafted story that will leave
you satisfied for now....Aslan and Quaid are still fighting that invisible pull, will these
two gorgeous men just let go and enjoy being together please, I'm dying here.

Addicting series

I really enjoyed it. I listen to a lot of audio books but this one really made me stop and enjoy the story quite a few times. It has one of my top author’s plus the narration by Nick J. Russo is perfect. He really knew how to give added personality to the story. I feel his voice and the way he has perfected the timbre of the story made it feel like it was something playing out before me. This is the kind of audio book that causes me to want to listen more than read.
I was so anxious to get this story and it did not disappointment me. The story really starts in Temporary Partners so I feel it is a necessity to read that one first. The attraction between these two Aslan and Quaid is unbelievable. But there are a number of issues that keep both from wanting more than a hookup. Quaid is trying to get over a bad relationship. Aslan is known as the playboy and addiction issues keep him from involvement. And these guys work in different detective groups that have a real dislike for each other.
When a murder and brutal beating bring these two together that attraction is rekindled. I enjoyed reading these two dance around each other. Kept saying this was the last time. And of course, they couldn’t stay away from each other so each time was the last time.
I feel the mystery part of the story is real good. Quaid having a personal involvement in this case and Aslan being assigned to it gave them an excuse to be together.
The teasing and flirting Aslan does to Quaid gave me more than a couple laughs. The development of the relationship is what I expected from this author. It is more the focus of the story rather than the case. The actions of both of these guys entertained me as the answers were revealed concerning the mystery.
I feel this story ends on a hrn and really makes me impatient to have the next in the series.
