All four series of the hilarious historical sitcom set just before and during the American Revolution. Baltimore, 1770, and shopkeeper Samuel Oliphant has much to worry about. Barney and Cathy. Evan and Fiona. David and Alice. Three couples who have beaten the odds and stayed married - but is that simply because they haven’t got around to divorcing yet? In these three series, we follow this group of friends throughout weekends away and tricky date nights, weddings and funerals, Christmas celebrations and counselling sessions - all of which give them plenty of opportunity for flirting, fighting, competitiveness and reprehensible behaviour. We listen in to their innermost thoughts, feelings and motivations as they break the fourth wall.

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Not what I expected
I didn't know what to expect from this dramatization. I expected fantasy set in an alternate universe as it was written. But.. the synopsis doesn't do it justice. This is very funny with a lot of tongue in cheek humor. I started listening and had to back up several times for the jokes and funny happenings. Most of this is due to the background music and sounds blocking out softer voices. The humor is adult but not graphic. There should be more about the villain and about the dog. It is omitted in the synopsis that the dog is changed into a human. But he remains the faithful canine companion. He behaves as I would expect my dog to behave if he became human. His values are that of the loyal canine who doesn't really understand why he is now human. But he goes along with it because of his master. The villain and his side kick are funny too. The supporting cast is great. I am glad that I browsed and got the entire series on one audiobook. Anyone who enjoys radio type dramatizations and humor should give this a try. My only complaint is that the background music and sounds made the voices hard to hear at times.

saved by the evil characters
coming to this straight after Hut 33 I wasn't initially sure I'd done the right thing. However, with the first couple of set up chapters out of the way, things got interesting. I shan't spoil it with details, but suffice to say that the combined characters of the Lord of Darkness and his right hand sycophantic 2iC, Creech are worth listening to all by themselves. Overall I gave this a decent rating, but do believe that without the talent of those actors it wouldn't have got above the 3/5 mark

I love it! Please, please make more!!
This comedy series is a perfect blend of three of my favorite kinds of entertainment: radio "drama", fantasy tropes. and british sitcom humour. Elvenquest worked amazingly well for me as a series, and I would love to see more of it or more like it. A pity that it ended right around the time Game of Thrones was gaining purchase in the cultural zeitgeist, as it could have given this show a boost that led to additional series. Series 1 took a bit of time to find its voice and balance of tone, but series 2 improved on the format and characters and by midway through I was beginning to really enjoy the journey. Series 3 and 4 were pure bliss.

Loved this, hours of laughs
What made the experience of listening to Elvenquest the most enjoyable?
Looking forward to every episode, I listened to these in the gym, made me look forward to going!
What did you like best about this story?
Great performances, well written episodes every time, lots of laughs, I could go on and on.
Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favourite?
Hmm, a tough one, Stephen Mangan was great in this, it was a good ensemble cast, perhaps Alastair McGowan edged it as Lord Darkness.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I'm not sure about being moved, but I laughed in every episode.
Any additional comments?
I've already recommended this to a few people, great series, good value (24 episodes, 4 series in one collection), and won't disappoint.

Enjoyable but not particularly engaging
I listened to a random episode of Elven Quest on radio 4 extra a while ago, and I remember thinking that it might be worth buying a whole series to get the full experience. Which is why I was so pleased to find this bumper audiobook that includes all 4 series!
On the plus side, you don't need to be a fan of Dungeons and Dragons to enjoy this programme as most of the jokes are based on relationships, gender stereotypes and a typically English changing-room humour. The relationship between Lord Darkness and his hideous sidekick Kreech is particularly well-imagined, and involves some of the funniest moments.
On the down side, most of the jokes are so familiar and well-worn that they're not particularly funny, just mildly amusing, and some of the performances feel a bit lacklustre.
In general, it never really lived up to my expectations and I came away feeling that if the writing had been a bit tighter, then this could have been an extremely funny and successful series. I think I was spoilt by listening to the hilariously funny, anarchic and surreal Bleak Expectations before I moved onto Elven Quest. If you're looking for a good laugh from an audiobook then I suggest you try that instead.
Having said all that, I was pleasantly surprised that this audiobook includes all 4 series in one go. Not only does it make it a lot easier to listen to, as you don't have to keep chopping and changing between files, but it's also a heck of a lot cheaper!

Good fun but a bit repetitive
We've enjoyed it, it's nicely produced and funny but each season is very similar and the jokes to get repeated

Join the quest for the sword of Asnagar!!
I loved listening to this to go to bed! Definitely an adult bedtime story. I stumbled upon this gem after searching for Stephen Mangan and this did not disappoint!!!
