Almost Useless

Extremely basic 45 min into the book. So far has been a description of basic human emotions and lots of promising that one can increase their EQ. Extremely basic reference to business, nothing about leadership so far. Narrator is understandable but annoying and has long and awkward pauses. Returned.

A let down for me

I was excited to finally add this book to my library, it had been sitting in my wishlist for a while. My experience greatly differs from other reviewers. I am sure this is a great book for some, but it was a let down for me.

I would consider myself an intermediate leader. I have many years of teaching adult learners in emergency management fields. I also lead small teams and have been a supervisor. I do not consider myself an advanced leader as I need more time and practice to get there.

I tried twice to listen to this book and I only made it 30 minutes into it. The narrator has an odd speaking rhythm that inserts emphasis and pauses in odd places. Again the topic is a great one but the part of the book I listened to really only hit on very surface level details. This is the only leadership book I have ever returned. Please keep in mind I am not saying this book is bad, I am saying why it did not work for me.

Good for brush ups

I wouldn't recommend this book as the first touch point for a reader new to the topics of communication and or leadership. The contents is very 'acedemic' and lacking the human touch, or anecdotal stories. I personally find these good to make the concepts more tangible and memorable.

That being said, the information in this book is universally good. It skates over many relevant topics without going into any of them in great depth. I think this is the purpose of this book and therefore makes for a great quick read to recap on one's existing knowledge. For this reason, I'm likely to read it again in a few months time. All in all it was a good and useful read, but not a life changer. And that is OK as not all books need to be.
