Publisher's Summary

In this revised best-selling book, Peter Scazzero outlines a road map for discipleship with Jesus that is powerfully transformative. He unveils what's wrong with our current definition of "spiritual growth" and offers not only a model of spirituality that actually works, but seven steps to change that will help you experience authentic faith and hunger for God.

Peter Scazzero learned the hard way: You can't be spiritually mature while remaining emotionally immature. Even though he was the pastor of a growing church, he did what most people do:

  • Avoid conflict in the name of Christianity.
  • Ignore his anger, sadness, and fear.
  • Use God to run from God.
  • Live without boundaries.

Eventually God awakened him to a biblical integration of emotional health and the spiritual practice of slowing down and quieting your life for to experience a firsthand relationship with Jesus. It created nothing short of a spiritual revolution in Scazzero, in his church, and now in thousands of other churches.

In this updated edition, Scazzero shares new stories and principles as he outlines his journey and the signs of emotionally unhealthy spirituality. Then he provides seven biblical, reality-tested ways to break through to the revolutionary life Christ meant for you.

The missing piece of my Christian walk

I have been a Christian for 23 years and this is the first teaching I have ever heard that marries Biblical truth with basic human psychology of emotions. I am so grateful for this teaching and I will be sharing it with every Christian friend I know!

Something to read once a year

Excellent and practical. Will now be my go to book to work through in small group. So many areas to read and learn from again and again. When is part 2 coming?

Great Book!

Very applicable to daily life. As someone who has recently done and is doing a lot of work on anxiety and depression, this book nails down a lot of issues Christians face by ignoring their problems. We push it down thinking we should be happy in Christ and are embarrassed to show our weakness. You can only push it down for so long before that pain manifests itself in ways you can't control. Then, you have a bigger mountain to climb than the original. There are several great ideas on how to get healthy and push forward into an emotionally healthy relationship with others and God. I can't wait to start some of these aspects for rule of life.

Intentional

Loved the daily office, the practice of resting and being quiet helped me to know how being busy doing and saying nothing is insignificant. The Lord God delights in spending time with me and i am learning to delight in Him.

A Must Read for Every Follower of Jesus

I read this book last year and knew immediately this would be a book I’d read annually for the rest of my life.

I have just completed it again for a second time and feel I gained even more this time around.

Pastor Pete’s ability to describe emotional maturity and how to grow in it is simultaneously convicting and encouraging, like any “sermon” should be.

This is truly a must read for anyone who truly wants to grow in a healthy, relational way.
