Story
When linguist Andrew Dennison is yanked from his bed by the Secret Service and taken to a top secret facility in the desert, he has no idea he's been brought there to translate the words of an ancient demon. He joins pretty but cold veterinarian Sun Jones, eccentric molecular biologist Dr. Frank Belgium, and a hodge-podge of religious, military, and science personnel to try and figure out if the creature is, indeed, Satan. But things quickly go bad, and very soon Andy isn't just fighting for his life, but the lives of everyone on earth…

Story
It was supposed to be a harmless camping trip. Six wayward teenagers who'd run into trouble with the law, and their court-appointed guardians, Sara and Martin Randhurst. Three nights on a small, deserted island off of Michigan's upper peninsula. A time to bond, to learn, to heal. Then Martin told a campfire story about the island's history. Of the old civil war prison hidden in there, and the starving confederate soldiers who resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. Everyone thought it was funny. They even laughed when Martin pretended to be dragged off into the woods.

WOW.......GREAT BOOK!!!
I have become a HUGE Jack Kilborn fan. I listened to "Afraid" first and couldn't get enough. I was so excited to begin "Endurance" and I was not disappointed. I use to be a big fan of Dean Koontz but I have to admit Mr. Kilborn has him beat. If you love horror stories you will not be disappointed in this book. Just be prepared to listen because you will not be able to press pause!!!

Awesome
This book was amazing. The horror and fast paced action was great. Truly a story of people who go through hell and back. I've bought every Jack Kilborn book he puts out and I will continue to do the same. If you like gruesome horror with and a lot of action then look no further.
I thought the narrator did a great job. His southern style made a lot of the characters really come to life. I have listened to many books where four or five characters sound exactly the same and its hard to know who is who. I could definately tell when each character was speaking. Excellent.
Five stars!

perfect narration made for a creepy novel
If i had read this book on my own I don't think it would of had the same feel. Christopher Lane's narration made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up on end. The book it's self was typical Jack Kilborn. Gruesome and a bit over the top, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I truely recommend to all horror novel fans.

Amazing narrator
This book is the right amount of creepy. It gave me chills. Was a bit over the top but it still worked! I’m never going to the south. The narrator was amazing and kept me in the story! I don’t think I’ve ever had much praise for the narrator before, they can really make or break a story.

Loved it! Is there a sequel??
I couldn't stop listening to this-- it's definitely a page-turner, and the narrator really sells the story and outdoes himself with the different voices, in a good way. Wonderful characters, especially the grandma, Florence. It's got loads of gore, but that's just part of the charm in this case. Outrageous premise, reminiscent of Wrong Turn and that season of American Horror Story with the creepy backwoods family, but way better than both of those put together. Every time I thought the book was about to fall into a cliche, it outdid itself with a surprise that I hadn't seen coming. The action starts pretty much out of the gate and doesn't let up. Fans of creature features, splatter movies, mutant stories, freakshows, and the like will love this. I know I did! I would read a sequel in a heartbeat, and the end is set up for just that, so JA Konrath if you're reading this, please write one!

This is a genre treat
Okay, if you are looking for an uplifting, introspective yadda, yadda... keep looking. This hits the same vein as staying up late and watching "Friday the Nightmare on Elm Chainsaw".
I have listened to a few of Jack's books and like them because they prod at the same nerve that weirded me out when I was 13, camping and someone starts telling a scary story that you were like "no way" but it creeped you out later in the dark.
I thought Christopher Lane should be commended. He got a pretty into it with some unsettling vocalizations that made me wonder what the hell went on in his childhood.
Hey its fun, its like a carnival ride. This book was never meant to compare to "Grapes of Wrath"!

Much more than another scary story!!
I am a multi-book a week reader and am bad at writing reviews. However, this story deserves one.
I recently found Blake Crouch who led me to J.A. Konrath. While I was an avid Stephen King reader in my youth, his stuff became a little too disturbing for me as I got older and I found I wasnt appreciating the story he was telling.
Ater deciding to start with Konrath's Origins and ultimately wanting to read his most recent Dark Thriller series book, Haunted House, I decided I needed to learn about the characters in this new book. The characters of whom are from many of the stories in Konrath's Dark Thriller series.
After reading the reviews for Konrath's Endurance and the many comparisons to King, as well as the descriptions of gratuitous gore and violence, I finally made the dive.
The narrator was amazing and at first, a little surprising. After listening to Christopher Lane tell the story, I can't even imagine reading it in print. It honestly would not have moved me the way it did, not hearing Lane's masterful performance.
Yes, Endurance has a lot of gore, as well as disturbing violence. However, this story keeps a fast pace and scary tempo; has many endearing moments; and made me chuckle outloud a half dozen times.
Endurance is much more than an scary story, it's a very well written and well narrated scary story.

Before i purchased this book i had a listen to the narrator,as i think this is most important when listening to audio. At first i thought no way can i listen to that old deep south twang, but the story sounded so good,so i took a risk, thank god i did as it goes the narrator was in fact perfect for this kind of story, its gripping, disturbing and i think it would make a excellent film!!
If you are not in to the sort of inbreed type films then do not listen, you need a hard stomach too,as it is quite Gross in parts.
I enjoyed every minute highly recommended.

This was my first “horror” type of book . And I guess if you have to start somewhere this is a good place to start. Although I won’t rush to read any more in this genre, I must say that it was well written and amazingly well performed! JAKonrath and Christopher Lane. Make an terrific duo. But in furores I’ll choose the genre more carefully.

Endurance by Jack Kilborn
I do hope that this is meant to be a parody of a splatter/gore/blood&entrails thriller. If so the author really succeeded. It is so gross I laughed my head off - !!
I do admit I chose the book for the reader, Christopher Lane. He is EXCELLENT and is the only reason for me to listen to this book. He gets ***** for his performance.

Not a dull moment!
Wow, I loved this! It's odd because, for a horror novel, it's not actually very scary. It's pretty obvious from the start what is going to happen because it's the same as every other horror story, but strangely that doesn't detract from it. It is extremely gorey, very blackly comic in places and touching in others. There is good character development for a novel of this type, although many of the bad guys are completely unbelievable - that was quite a relief as I'm not a fan of exploring the psychology of the baddies too deeply. Quite a lot else is unbelievable, especially how many injuries people can take and still live, but I suppose it's hard to write a horror story without that.
The narration is brilliant, one of the best I've heard. Christopher Lane has just the right accent and tone for a story like this and he puts on good voices for the different characters.
I really recommend this for fans of gore, but not for people who prefer subtle psychological terror from horror.

Brilliant read...'' Wrong turn'' as a book!
Again my second novel by this author (will work my way through his books now, as so far I have loved all of them!) This book, for me was made by not only the brilliant (and like someone said, not original but hey, some stories just work so why not do them over again!) storyline but also the characters. Very likeable and you do root for them... And they certainly need rooting for as by now I have realised that these books are not mild but full on terror need to get out of there situations. Very thrilling which of course is only made moreso by the authors ability to create a scene and bring you into the horror!
If you enjoyed at all the theme to the film Wrong Turn.. Then you will absolutely love this. Brilliant fast paced book.

A True Horror Story
A true horror/ thriller novel for lovers of the genre. Gory and filled with suspense, this one cannot be put down! Fantastic narrator and a real nail-bitter of a story. For the brave only!
