An excellent audiobook!

This was a fantastic book that sheds light on the inequalities in today’s classroom settings and the issues that the educational system develops.

It’s a topic that is not often discussed in our politics today, unfortunately, but this book really outlines the how, the what, and the why of it all and explains some pretty straightforward solutions to the current problems.

If you’re less familiar with this topic, this id absolutely the book for you!

Message is Desperately Needed

This audiobook really spoke to my heart. I felt all of the problems that the author mentioned when I was going to school. But following the recommendations, which are based on realizing that students are diverse, they have different talents and interests, is really important. The strategies like, listening to your students, appreciating diversity (as opposed to denying differences) is the more reasonable thing to do. Over all much needed book!

Very insightful and informative!

I am not a teacher, but this book intrigued me as the topic is a very important one–increasing equity in schools to provide students with a better chance at success after gradation. This audiobook explains how to efficiently implement Universal Design for Learning to do so. It also teaches the listener about the importance of social-emotional learning. Whether you are a teacher or not, this book gives great insight to the flaws in our education system and how we can adapt to fix them and create a better future for our kids. Very interesting listen!

A very insightful book!

Although geared towards teachers, it's still suitable for teaching our kids at home to have a complete understanding and something that I can use while helping raise my grandson. I appreciated that Cruz also included the fact that standardized testing doesn't always show the potential of a child that has tried hard and motivated not being included. Including that outside factors can contribute to low test grading, such as hungry at the time or language barriers often occur. What also happens is that if kids don't do well on the standardized tests, it makes the teacher look bad, and then the teacher has to attend classes.
Recognizing that if a child fails on a test, they are a failure that attributes to that child having low self-esteem. Cruz explains that most GPAs are a compilation of required classes to increase and not a measure of intelligence as a whole. This book targets mindsets and improves social and emotional learning that will enhance equity. Parents' involvement in getting outside help if a child is not doing as well to improve equity. For teachers, learning more about the child's likes and dislikes to personalize their learning. Teaching them that even if they fail shows them that something didn't work and that they are still learning. Also, the teacher needs to listen to the students to create successful communication and increase empathy, improving a better relationship and assisting in learning. This also includes emotional learning and how a child's emotional issues are also attributed to understanding.
I really enjoyed this book and recommend it. This book delves into the underlying issues when focusing only on IQ instead of EQ, and how to target and improve them to assist students in the long term.

Equity concept will help significantly!

Through the UDL program, people of different races and nationalities can have equal opportunities for education at any level, which is a very powerful point of view and strategy. Of course, the book explains how to communicate with all kids in general as well. This book is a great message and a short-cut guide to an educational department on how to improve education. I see in this book some good suggestions on how kids can improve emotionally and personally and be more responsible. There are some good motivational tricks for students for studying in class, not just through traditional methods but through technology as well.

Excellent resource!

I recently started teaching, and I was introduced to this topic by a peer. I wanted to learn as much as I could, and this book was an amazing A-Z resource. It's well-organized. I could follow it easily with very little prior knowledge. And the narrator is fantastic. Great book.

What they don't teach you!

I can still remember finishing high school and feeling not in the slightest prepared to become successful, even though this is what I desired most. Although mainstream education holds some weight in how you may fare in your adult life there are a set of un-taught skills which can greatly improve your chances of success in life. Learning 'SEL' Social Emotional and Learning skills is a vital part of just the skills you need to succeed

Down to earth matters

The information in this book may be worth more than all you learn in four years at university. At University, you get all the educational information you need, but this book shows you how this all works out in real life. Worth its weight in gold!
