Publisher's Summary

Evangelical Theology: Audio Lectures, a companion to the textbook Evangelical Theology, presents systematic theology from the unique perspective of a biblical scholar. Author and scholar Michael Bird contends that the center, unity, and boundary of the evangelical faith is the evangel, or gospel, as opposed to doctrines like justification by faith or inerrancy.

The evangel is the unifying thread in evangelical theology and the theological hermeneutic through which the various loci of theology need to be understood, thus these lectures present an approach to Christian doctrine that begins with the gospel and sees each loci through the lens of the gospel.

Filled with humor that will keep viewers engaged as they learn the foundational doctrines of the Christian faith, Evangelical Theology: Audio Lectures is an ideal way for beginning students and laypeople to explore theology.

Theologically Rich and Challenging

I have thoroughly enjoyed this lecture series. Dr. Bird clearly and concisely describes evangelical theology without compromising the integrity of the Gospel it is founded on. His wit and humor are fun and enjoyable. The content is weighty, but anyone can listen to this and be educated, enriched, and more equipped to understand the basic tenets of the Church and the Gospel’s centrality in the daily Christian life.

Heady and Funny!

I throughly enjoyed this book. It is divided into short lectures that are easy to hear. The author has also got a great sense of humor. I am listening to it again in order to hear what I might have missed the first time. Heady but Funny, what a great combination!

Dr. Bird knocks it out of the park!

I've read several systematic theologies, and this is my favorite. I'm not a Calvinist or even an Anglican (as the author is) but the author presents all the major views on each issue and is open about any biases he has. The result is a very informative, broad, primer to systematic theology that is, as far as I know, unrivaled.

While Dr. Bird covers all the major topics, he does so in a way that is very approachable. A Christian who is serious about their faith will find the content easy to grasp. On the other hand, I think this would be an excellent text for a master's level systematic theology course. Dr. Bird manages this balance of approachability and depth in a way that few others manage.

I'm a charismatic arminian who is convinced of sacramental theology -- and I love this book. I know cessationist calvinists who love this book just as much as I do.

Great Overview

I loved Bird’s focus on the essentials and his ability to hold my attention even while driving (and it’s theology!) His only difficult to follow section was on gender. I would recommend this to anyone interested in Christianity, and I might use it with some disciples.

Simple, fun and inviting

This audio lecture is a great introduction and overview to evangelical theology. Michael F. Birds humorous and quirky personality shines through, while he opens up complex conversations of theology in a simple yet inviting manner.

There is a few places I think the chapter could have started a minute earlier or so. However for the most part the chapter dividing is good.

I’d recommend this to anyone who wants to get to an understanding of evangelical theology, but have some experience with academic studies. Though be aware that you will have to look up theological terminology if you don’t know them already.
