Story
Summer, 1976. Jesse and his brother, Edgar, are on the road in search of victims. They’re rovers, nearly indestructible nocturnal beings who must consume human blood in order to survive. For 70 years they’ve lurked on the fringes of society, roaming from town to town, dingy motel to dingy motel, stalking the transients, addicts, and prostitutes they feed on. This hard-boiled supernatural hell ride kicks off when the brothers encounter a young woman who disrupts their grim routine.

Everyone has wanted their favorite book to be real, if only for a moment. Everyone has wished to meet their favorite characters, if only for a day. Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Publisher's Summary
Winner of 2021 Voice Arts Award, Audiobook Narration — Science Fiction
Narrated by award-winning actor Dan Stevens (Beauty and the Beast, FX’s Legion) Ever Winter is a vivid and eloquent story of loss, rehabilitation, and revenge set in a post-apocalyptic ice world.
Far from the savage remnants of humanity, Henry and his family have managed to survive the grip of desolate, perpetual winter on a vast tundra that was once an ocean teeming with life. When the family is discovered, their peaceful existence is shattered and their lives changed forever.
Henry’s siblings are kidnapped, leaving him alone in the ruins of their home. Broken, altered, and tormented by all that has befallen him, he is driven to wreak vengeance upon those who assume him dead...by any means necessary.
Fans of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road or Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven will enjoy the raw, emotional pull of debut author Peter Hackshaw’s writing.
Critic Reviews
"Stevens proves once again that his acting training translates perfectly to audiobook narration." (AudioFile Magazine)
"Peter Hackshaw’s writing is immersive...and I knew while reading it that listeners would feel like they’re entering the post-apocalyptic world with Henry and his family. I’m delighted to join Podium Audio in bringing Ever Winter to life.” (Actor Dan Stevens, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga; Downton Abbey)

Not sure whether to read or listen? LISTEN!!!
Outstanding all the way round! Whether this book is read or listened to, it is a wonderful journey. The story is thoughtful, exciting, stressful, you name it. Ever Winter is more than well written, futuristic science fiction. It is a story of love, loss, and revenge. Then add Dan Stevens as the narrator and THERE YOU GO! I have long enjoyed Mr. Stevens's work as both an actor and narrator but listening to this book, I could not get over how amazing he is at bringing the characters to life. Phenomenal work here! There are only a handful of books I reread or re-listen to (Moby Dick, Count of Monte Cristo, Frankenstein (narrated by Dan) ), and Ever Winter will DEFINITELY be on my revisit list!

Survival in the frozen Earth
Ever Winter tells the story of the fate of one family living through the post apocalyptic frozen Earth.
Father and Mother chose to live apart from survivors with their six children, knowing what is left of the world is a cruel place.
An intense hardship life is, but the family has yet to realize it's most harrowing experience; when their world is torn apart, not only survival, but revenge becomes the focal point of existing.
A dark story of Earth's afterlife, with a small glimmer of light that humanity will endure it's challenges to become an inhumane society when all around us collapses.
Enough can not be said for the magic of Dan Stevens' narration, so I won't even try.

Enjoyable
I like the concept of the book but I just feel it fell short just a teeny bit. It was a little on the adolescent side. I almost gave up halfway through because it was so depressing. But I hung in there and things finally picked up and the ending was satisfying. The narrator was new to me. Some of the character voices that he did were outstanding. In general he had a strong Australian accent. It reminded me of the Mad Macks world.
