Story
The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: Become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway.

Story
When 17-year-old Katy Swartz moved to West Virginia right before her senior year, she'd pretty much resigned herself to thick accents, dodgy Internet access, and a whole lot of boring, but then she spotted her hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up...until he opened his mouth. Daemon Black is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. It's hate at first sight, but when a stranger attacks her and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens. The hot guy next door? Well, he's an alien.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Publisher's Summary
Every choice has consequences - but 17-year-old Layla faces tougher choices than most. Light or darkness. Wickedly sexy demon prince Roth or Zayne, the gorgeous, protective Warden that she never thought could be hers. Hardest of all, Layla has to decide which side of herself to trust.
Layla has a new problem, too. A Lilin - the deadliest of demons - has been unleashed, wreaking havoc on those around her, including her best friend. To keep Sam from a fate much, much worse than death, Layla must strike a deal with the enemy while saving her city - and her race - from destruction. Torn between two worlds and two different boys, Layla has no certainties, least of all survival, especially when an old bargain comes back to haunt them all. But sometimes, when secrets are everywhere and the truth seems unknowable, you have to listen to your heart, pick a side - and then fight like hell.

Not up to par
I am usually a huge fan of Armentrout's work, but this series just really failed for me. The premise was interesting and obviously I had to finish the series. However, with every page turn I became increasingly astounded by how often I would roll my eyes. The overuse of similes and metaphors really ruined my overall enjoyment. There was an exceeding amount of fluff. Don't get me wrong- I love my fluff, but when I say exceeding... It was over the top and completely unnecessary. I repeat, the storyline was intriguing, but be warned that you will have to muddle through redundant descriptions and less than provocative character development. (The reader reminded me of Mulan when Mulan had to pretend to be a boy- I've had better readers, but she wasn't the worst I've heard) Overall, this was a mediocre book- that could have potentially been phenomenal with only better editing.

Mostly filler
What disappointed you about Every Last Breath?
The first two in the series were decent. Definitely up to par with other books I've read from this author. This one almost felt like it was written by a different person. The majority of the book was just filler. I feel like if you grouped up all the ridiculous and childish "dirty" talk, kissing, describing how hot the guy is and the main character describing whatever just happened back as though we are too stupid to know what just happened, this book would be half the length. The story itself could have been fine but this book was sadly hard to get through unlike the first two in the series.
Has Every Last Breath turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, but I won't likely buy more from this author.
What does Saskia Maarleveld bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She did a good job bringing life to the characters.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Relief. I was really glad when it was over. Not something I can say about many books.

Usually, i love Armentrout’s work because the plot twists are so unexpected, and you are really hanging in there for every word. But this book... so... many... expected... turns... and... twists...
So I can’t help but feel disappointed with this book. :/

Wonderful series
Seventeen year old Layla has a tough choice to make between the Warden she has been crushing on her whole life and the sexy Demon who recently swept into her life. Then there is also the matter of the Lilan, the evil step-brother intent on bringing about Armageddon. And Layla is the only one who can stop him.
Action-packed and steaming, the third installment of The Dark Elements series lives up to the high expectations set by the first two books. The story resolves the relationship issues and turns to more internal struggles as Layla faces her fears and discovers her inner strengths. Further questions are raised surrounding the true nature of ‘evil’, and Layla’s moral mettle is tested to the fullest extent, bringing her character development to a mature and sweeping end.
I do feel that the novel would have been a 5 star and not a 4 star if it had ended slightly earlier than it did. I’m a reader who likes to know that the conflict has been resolved, but still wants a little room for dreaming up my own ending. Armentrout really tied double knots on this ending though, and it ventured a little too far into the soppy soap for my tastes.
But, I still loved this book and adored the series!

Difficult to listen to
Just like the others in this series, this was hard to listen to. The narrator was unsuccessful at distinguishing voices between characters to the point where you couldn't always tell who was speaking. The plot was also just okay.

Love love this book! I don’t know why I hold off reading it this long! Roth is just the sweet even if he’s a badass lol I love all the characters in here and I feel so bad for Zen but I love the way she chose and am so glad that he was not change to a bad guy like some of the books I’ve read. He’s true to himself.

Does It Really Have to Be the End?!
What did you love best about Every Last Breath?
I loved that Layla finally picked her choice from her love triangle, but it was hard for me to let go of the other. I was so torn. I think the best part aside from Roth and Layla was getting to know Cayman. He just made me giggle!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Every Last Breath?
There were so many amazing moments. I cried so much and laughed more than I ever thought I would through this series. I'll quote Layla by saying, "I was the corniest cornball in a cornfield of popcorn!"
Have you listened to any of Saskia Maarleveld’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes! She is my favorite narrator here on Audible, and considering she has a younger sounding voice, she is perfect for the role of Layla. I also quite like her reading of male voices. I have never struggled to separate characters because of her superior narrating.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Absolutely!
Any additional comments?
Why oh why does this have to be over?!?!! I must have more Layla, Zayne, and Roth in my life! I cried more than I'd like to admit, I laughed hysterically out loud, and listened to all 3 books in a little over 3 days, so you know they were good! I could not put them down! With any good series I feel the loss of characters, but especially so with this one. I'm incredibly sad to move on. Do yourself a favor and buy this series; You won't regret it!

Loved the Series, just got a little bored with all the emotions
I absolutely loved this series of three books. The narrator Saskia drew me in from book one and I was hooked. Very easy to listen too and not annoying like other narrators. The story line on all three books was great, I love fantasy, romance and drama, so suited me to a tee. The only thing that I would say negatively was that in the third book I got a little bored with Layla talking about her feelings of love for Roth all the time and it not really getting anywhere. I found it a little over done on this area and not needed. This book is defo a teenage romance novel, so if your looking for anything more than that, it’s not for you. However defo worth a listen regardless.

Mixed emotions
The thing I love most about JLA is the surprising endings and the unpredictable events, which I feel the Dark Elements is lacking. Everything played out exactly as expected. The "hidden" is always too obvious. She also managed to turn a fascinating male character into nothing short of a lovesick puppy. There was also a few lose ends that I feel could have been dealt with better. It was a good story overall with some pretty awesome ideas along the way but it was a bit slow going and cliché. I'm glad she only used "the kiss deepened" phrase a handful of times in these series, unlike in the Covenant and Lux books that contain it in every chapter.
