Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

The enchanted island of Corfu was home to Gerald Durrell and his family for five years before the Second World War. For the passionate young zoologist, Corfu was a natural paradise, teeming with strange birds and beasts that he could collect watch and care for. But life was not without its problems - Gerald’s family often objected to his animal-collecting activities, especially when the beasts wound up in the family’s villa or even worse - the fridge.

Story
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Story
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Great story and reader but too much static noise
Would you listen to Every Living Thing again? Why?
Yes. I love James Herriot and his heart-warming escapades. The animals and their owners all feel so authentic.
What did you like best about this story?
The author is able to create a positive spin on everything.
What three words best describe Christopher Timothy’s voice?
British expressive melodious
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed a few times. One reason I enjoy this author is that the stories are pretty easy to listen to, without huge drama or unbearably emotional stories.
Any additional comments?
The only thing that would make it better is to remove the static background noise in the first nine parts. Ten through thirteen have a clear recording.

Every Living Thing
I really enjoyed this. I grew up watching the narrator play James Herriot in the British T.V. series and don't think I could imagine any one else reading this. He reads it really well. As he reads the stories you can hear the warmth and humour in his voice. You can even almost "hear" him smiling.
I would definitely recommend it.

I have loved the James Herriot collection for years and am now ecstatic to have it on my iPod. All his stories elicit a 'feel good' feeling for the listener with his brilliant writing and subject matter. My Favorite audio book
James Herriot is great, and Christopher Timothy, who played him in the TV series, does a fantastic job doing all of the voices of the different characters.
This book is my favorite because of Calum, 'the vet with a badger', and Tricky-Wu, the pekingese who bets on horse races!
Wonderful, true stories of life as a country veterinarian, expertly read! A delight for all ages!
