The spectacular fifth adventure in the genre-busting Ex-Heroes series.

The heroes are overjoyed when they discover another group of survivors living on a manmade island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. But there's something very, very wrong with this isolated community and its mysterious leader - a secret that could put every survivor in the world at risk.

The superheroes head out to sea.

Book 5 of the Ex-Heroes series sees Peter Clines return the series to something a bit more traditional than the last book. In fact, if this was a TV series this book would be considered a filler episode with only some minor character development going on. The larger story arc doesn't move forward all that much but since all your favorite characters from the series return it is still quite enjoyable. Book 4 was weird enough that fans of the series like me will find that a nice solid "back to reality" story really hits the spot.

There are two main story threads going on throughout this book. The first is a good will mission to a man-made island in the Pacific known as Lumeria. Zzzap, St. George, and Corpse Girl are sent off to make contact with the island's survivors see if there is a way they can establish some kind of relationship or help out. The second story line revolves around setting up a new remote base known as Eden where Danielle, Cesar and the Cerberus suit are sent with some super soldiers to help establish a sustainable food source.

Of course nothing is easy in a zombie apocalypse and each story thread is full of complications and dire situations. Both threads are enjoyable but mostly because of the super hero characters and their personalities. Zzzap and his penchant for geek trivia makes for some excellent interactions with Corpse Girl who has a limited ability to remember anything. Danielle is suffering from a crisis of self doubt since she has been without the Cerberus suit for so long and her rebuild of the suit is not quite ready when it gets called into duty to help at Eden. This means it will be Cesar in control of the Cerberus suit and not Danielle and that exposes her psyche to further doubt and fear.

Despite the fact that I called this filler earlier I still enjoyed it. All of the narrators once again do excellent jobs and really bring each of the characters to life. I continue to look forward to where Peter Clines will take this series in the future.

Binge Read

I really enjoyed this addition to the series... Missed a night of sleep finishing it... Kept trying to stop, but just couldn't... Not the book to start w/ in the series though as you'll be scrambling to figure what's going on w/ characters and story arcs... If you've enjoyed the series up to now you'll certainly appreciate this one... I particularly liked the self discovery of tthe cast of characters, especially Corpse Girl;). There's some fantastic tongue in cheek humor, nice pace and action, and better than average narration... Although I will say that if not prepared for the perspective switches the multiple voices might potentially confuse... All in all an utterly satisfying read and a nice appetizer while waiting for the followup to 14 and The Fold... Worth the credit and a binge read...

EXCELLENT ADDITION TO THIS AWESOME SERIES!!!

If you could sum up Ex-Isle in three words, what would they be?

Awesome, Excellent, Thrilling!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Ex-Isle?

When I thought Madeline may be dead...I was not happy...but I kind of thought there was some hope, I mean she Is The Corpse Girl!

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I love these narrators...all of....they really bring this story to life....

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yep it was, and I totally neglected my DVR to do it....but it took me 2 days!

Any additional comments?

I love this series...its unique and written so well, I am glad I gave book 1 the chance, I think I might of even picked it up on sale...I was super impressed and dove right into book 2...that's all there was at the time of the series...and it was enough to drag me in and hook me for life! LOL Peter Clines writing is so exciting and totally believable, even for a Zombocalypse! In this installment we have 2 separate story lines going on, because the group is split into to different missions....and I like how the story flowed smoothly from one plot to the other....I actually think this is one of the better books in this series, and I cant wait for the next one!

2 HUGE THUMBS UP AND A HIGHLY RECOMMEND FROM ME!!!!!

Performance wasn't up to usual standards

The story was good, but the performance was not great. Most of the female voices sounded exactly the same, even when there were multiple women in the same scene. There were also some editing/production errors where the male voice for a particular character changed in the middle of the scene, as though that line of dialogue was recorded by a different person, which was distracting. For example, in one scene, the voice of Cesar sounded like the voice for Gibbs for a couple lines, even though Cesar was alone and talking/thinking to himself. In another scene the voice of St George sounded exactly like the voice of Zap, even though St George's voice is usually done by a different actor.

First Clines book that just didn't do it for me!

I've liked all of the other books in this series, but I felt like this one didn't really have a plot. I wasn't feeling it on this one... maybe I'm crazy!!

Ex-ceptional...

Another great Ex-Heroes installment. Even though I looked at the cover image all the time (constantly checking how many more days until my pre-order would be available), it wasn't until the last couple hours of the book that I actually realized what it was.

To start, I think it was great that they went back to having multiple narrators; I think Jay Snyder did a great job on his own, but I think have Khristine and Mark back on the team adds an extra element to the narration.

This book had a lot fewer interactions with Stealth and Captain Freedom, both characters I enjoy a lot, but we learned a lot about some of the characters, and as usual, we were usually following around our here, St. George.

Another solid entry.

It is important to note that Clines has a knack for writing a compelling and enthralling story. Superheroes and Zombies are rarely the focus in these books. The focus is a fantastic story. Some how he always manages to make these people feel real. There's always complex problems that are realistic and believable instead of happenstance and bs. Its incredible how efficient and well paced it is. It dwells long enough to let you think and become invested but it moves fast enough to stop it from being stale. I missed a lot of my favorite characters but it still feels like returning to family with each entry.

great continuation of the story!

I listened to this book in a single sitting feeling that they are to short, maybe they are but the continuation of the story is fun and worthy of its place in the books story line.

Very clever theme of good overcoming evil

The storyline and narrators make this series rock. The compulsion to survive takes many forms...it builds character or it exposes the lack there of. I hope this series continues as a new world evolves out of an apocalyptic ongoing event/events

Hmm did I miss something

So I was expecting a little more closure from this book, instead, more characters were introduced and no closure

Lacking something

The Ex-heroes books are generally excellent, and Clines' writing is usually exceptionally well plotted.
This just seemed to spin its wheels for most of the book and then end. The flashbacks didn't really fit in or add anything - it feels like half a book with the conclusion omitted.

So, not his best book (that would be 14) but still better than The Walking Dead.

Peter Clines is a story telling genius.

Peter Clines is a story telling genius.
The characters and plot never fail to impress or surprise me and the narrators are so impressive in what they do, I can actually hear their distinct voices during character dialogue while reading the book and not listening to the audio-book
Over all this was an amazing book and series and as I hope for another instalment, I think I'll start the reading/listening to them all over again.
