Story
Emily Baxter feared she was the sole survivor of a deadly alien plague that swept through New York City, the nation, and the world in a downpour of blood red rain. And when the dead began transforming into a terrifying new form of life, she feared her survival might be brutally short-lived. Then, a human voice crackled from a satellite phone, urging her to flee north, where more refugees of the global annihilation hunkered down in a desolate Alaskan outpost. Now, with only the supplies she can carry and her faithful dog, Emily races across the country.

Story
For Meredith Gale, ending her life seems like her only choice, and that choice is the reason she’s dangling by her fingertips from a bridge high above the freezing water of the San Francisco Bay. But someone or some thing has other plans for Meredith, and as her fingers slip from the cold steel of the bridge, a disembodied voice asks her a simple question: “Candidate 13: Do you wish to be saved?” Realizing her mistake too late, Meredith screams “Yes!” and instantly finds herself transported to a mysterious island, alongside hundreds of other Candidates like her.

AD 2150: Chris Randall just lost his job as a bodyguard. That night, after picking up his wife, Bree, from her shift at a local casino, he breaks the bad news. Moments later, thunder cracks the sky, but there’s no lightning. Flaming debris rain across the valley, and a dark mass goes sailing out of the clouds, headed straight for LA. It’s not one of the Union’s starships, because they can’t defy gravity like that. But then, what is it? The answer chills both Chris and Bree to their cores: It’s an invasion.

Publisher's Summary
Emily Baxter’s dream life turns into a waking nightmare the day the red rain falls. Like a biblical plague, the scarlet downpour spreads a hideous virus that demolishes life in New York City, the nation, and the world. Suddenly the last soul in an annihilated metropolis - and possibly on Earth - the onetime newspaper reporter must learn to scavenge, survive...and plan for a future of utter solitude.
Then, from far-flung Alaska, another living voice reaches out, and Emily grasps at her only glimmer of hope. But she may be even less alone than she thinks. The world is in the midst of a strange and frightening transition; something that fell with the red rain is remaking Earth in its own alien image.
Now, Emily alone will bear witness to the terrifying new evolution - and risk her life to outrun it, for the sake of the future and in the name of all that is human.

Wouldn't have been able to finish this book
What disappointed you about Extinction Point?
I was disappointed in the main character. Almost every aspect of her. I also didn't buy the fact that she couldn't drive even though she grew up in a rural area and not in New York so therefor I felt her plan to bike her way out of harm is foolish and unnecessary. The book also moves at a slug pace. You hear about every single action Emily makes. Even the ones that are unimportant. She took off her shirt and her pants and her socks and her panties (hate that word but they use it) and she put on new panties and shirt and pants and socks.... Get on with it!
What other book might you compare Extinction Point to and why?
The only comparison I have been making this book to is the remaining by D. J. Molles simply because I was reading it at the same time. It is similar in the way that there has been some world ending event. The main character of that book is much more competent and his inner thoughts are not mindless and if they are about an old girlfriend that doesn't change the story in the slightest it goes by fast.
How could the performance have been better?
I didn't like the "acting" in this book. I felt it was over done and every time Emily speaks out loud I cringe and picture how I would say it. Her voice is shrill and hysterical every time she raises her voice and it sounds like nails on a chalk board. and her voice is fake when she is talking to other characters. Like how someone would sound on an off brand medication commercial or even an off brand infomercial. "Can the Weston 5000 REALY cook eggs in THREE minutes FLAT?!" Not normal conversational tones.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I must say I was disappointed! This book could have been so much more! The story was good. But the main character is a bit of a mess. And uses her "reporter curiosity as an excuse to just stand and watch whatever is happening instead of doing whatever goal is to be done, drawing out the scene another 10 or so minutes. It left me saying just go! I don't care instead of wanting to know more about what was going on.
Any additional comments?
This book would be a great movie. Without Emily's incessant and meaningless inner monologue and the narrators horrible acting I think the character's downfalls would be more tolerable. The only reason I finished this book is because it was an audio book. I'm glad I listened to it before Christmas b/c I would have shelved it in no time.

Had to quit this one...
I don't stop listening to many audiobooks in the middle, but this one is a rare exception. I should have paid more attention to previous reviews, but chose to give the book a shot because so many were positive.
The main character is so annoying that I found myself caring little if she made it. The style of writing is so tedious I wanted to bang my head into the steering wheel.

Several hours that I'll never get back
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
If a story in which the primary character is a naive dim bulb who repeatedly takes, what in my estimation are, idiotic, ignorant, short sighted actions, sounds interesting to you then this book might be right up your alley. Personally, I found myself repeatedly saying "idiot" out loud each time the central character did something ill advised or conceived and then had to deal with the consequences of her incompetence. In all fairness, I may not have fared any better in similar circumstances. Hopefully I'll never have to find out.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Extinction Point?
Had the author written the story with a central character who had a bit more understanding of life in general, this could have a much more enjoyable and interesting book.

Stay far far away from this book. It is horrible.
Would you try another book from Paul Antony Jones and/or Emily Beresford?
I would try another book by Emily Beresford who narrated the book, however I won't be reading any more books written by Paul Antony Jones.
What do you think your next listen will be?
I am currently listening to Night Film by Marisha Pessl and it has nearly made me forget the horrible experience called Extinction Point.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Emily Beresford?
I think the narrator did a fine job with the material she was given.
What character would you cut from Extinction Point?
There is really only the main character, so I would cut her...
Any additional comments?
Stay away from this book!

Hate this character
I really just disliked this character. The world is ending and she decides to flee New York City on a bicycle? I've been to New York, I have issues envisioning this kind of thing. It did not come off as even the least bit imaginable for me. Somehow in the preview I missed the fact that this is about aliens and I dislike alien stories but that's probably more my fault than the authors. Nothing about this one I liked. sorry.

Very, very slow!!!
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If the entire book had only been the first five chapters.
What was most disappointing about Paul Antony Jones’s story?
Too much detail, which made it very slow paced.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Emily Beresford?
Yeah, sure. She did a good job.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The story line was interesting, blood rain, all of humanity disappearing, nasty looking aliens, all thumbs up, but it took too long for it to get anywhere

I Didn't Read the Reviews
And now I have regret.
This book is tedious and unbelievable. The main character is stupid, and the story is nothing but a dry narrative of her foolish actions.
It was a real hate-listen: I finished it only to be able to write a scathing review. But now that I'm done, I don't have the energy.
Just dreadful.

Stuck In The Car with Audible's Deal of The Day
The deal will be when this novel gets to the extinction point. Was on a commute, and it was the only listen I had. It BARELY beat out listening to nothing. The reader experiences no character development with the one exception of a stray dog. There was no real attempt to link sci fi elements with reality, and the writing didn't allow the reader to suspend reality, resulting in a poor attempt at story execution. Pass it by.

One of the worst books I have ever paid for.
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I can't imagine anyone finding this book anything but aweful. It has a great story Idea, but it is so poorly written it should have never been published. The Repetitious use of words makes it seem like the writer was trying to reach a word count.
Did Emily Beresford do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
THe Naration was fine.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Extinction Point?
This book should not have been published and sold. It will need a complete rewrite.

Lost time
I try to think of the feelings of writers & so don't often write negative reviews, and since it appears many others have done so I'll just say that, even at a discount, I wondered how this book got made- much less an audio version. Editing and additional drafts with more depth and better character & story development might have made an interesting concept something more...sorry to say, this lacked all the important elements.

First-rate enjoyable story
I have not read an extinction story before and found this to be excellent. We follow Emily Baxter day by day. We see her everyday life, for a day, before the Blood rain falls and the virus takes affect.
The description of her feeling and the events around what happened to her policeman boyfriend were well described. We watch as the virus overtakes the city and she realises she is alone.
From other peoples reviews it is obviously a love it or hate it book and I am on the love it side.

Very poor written and predictable storyline
I bought this audio recording because it was recommended by Audible or Amazon's search engine bots for me. Why - I don't know.I'd recently read the exciting and enthralling Robo-apocalyse and Amped by Daniel Wilson and also, Daemon and Kill List by Daniel Suarez.
My true interest is in the coming of a Robot/AI age and how we get on with that. This book was poorly written, written by numbers horror/end of the world schtick. Think "I am Legend" with a woman instead of Will Smith and red goo aliens instead of the rabid, vampire monsters.
Why on earth she chooses a bicycle instead of a car is a mystery. The endless descriptions of clothing and "I think this" "I decided that" were tedious.
It did keep me reading, so it wasn't appalling, but really not very good. Especially as I just re-read Hyperion by Dan Simmons and Player of Games by Iain Banks. I suppose comparing it against them is not fair, but there are a number of modern authors who write exciting and more contemporary stories. This just isn't one of them.

Edge of the seat stuff
This audio book was fab, I am not usually a fan of the American accent's to be honest, but Emily Beresford's accent wasn't too bad. So I listened to the whole book. I was pretty scared all the way through it if i'm being honest, I love sci-fi stuff always have, what a great story I am hoping that Paul Anthony jones has a follow up to this. I recommend this audio book wholeheartedly.

There is no need for a prolonged imitation of child’s screaming
I tried to like this book - but seriously - the performer screaming at the top of her lungs continuously throughout the scene in an attempt to show what the child sounds like is just too much. I can easily imagine it by myself, thank you, there is no need to continuously illustrate it. Ok, fine, do it once, but at least 10 times in one scene? Who signs off on this? Sorry but I am going to stop the book here and not going to risk anymore, in case there are other sudden weird screaming sounds in this book, the performance is just bizarre and inappropriate in my opinion. I didn’t have time to pull off my headphones before it happened and thought my head will explode! There should be a warning in the description of this book about these screams - ridiculous. And if you are emulating child screams, why not then emulate “swooshing dust sounds”? Fire alarm? Adults’s screams? The story also doesn’t grip me, sorry, it began well - fast-paced, easy to listen - but then started to get a bit dull. Maybe I would have given it a bit longer, but the screams were just too much.

Flowery prose
If you like long descriptive passages this book is for you. If you like fast paced action then I would not recommend this book.

Frustrating
Is this the dumbest, most inept, naive woman in all of NYC? Surely the author could have given her a little more common sense, especially since she hails from a farming community. I found it cringeworthy to listen to at times but, I have to get the next book to see if she finally gets her act together.
