Story
It should have been a routine investigation. Instead, DEA K-9 agent Adam "Deck" Decker watches in horror as one Denver hospital seems to be ground zero for overdoses of a new drug. Now Deck can only hope a certain ER doctor will help him and his canine partner track down the source. Dr. Tori Sampson has her reasons for not trusting federal agents, especially ones working for the DEA. But the rash of overdoses—including a heartbreaking case involving a teen—is alarmingly high. And the new opioid is not only extremely dangerous, it defies all the usual medical treatments.

Publisher's Summary
Honor, Loyalty, Love
David Cruz is good at two things: war and training dogs. The ex-soldier's toughest case is Atlas, a Belgian Malinois whose handler died in combat. Nobody at Hope's Crossing kennel can break through the animal's grief. That is, until dog whisperer Evelyn Jones walks into the facility...and into Atlas' heart. David hates to admit that the curvy blonde's mesmerizing effect isn't limited to canines. But when Lyn's work with Atlas puts her in danger, David will do anything to protect her.
Lyn realizes that David's own battle scars make him uniquely qualified for his job as a trainer. Tough as nails yet gentle when it counts, he's gotten closer to Atlas than anyone else - and he's willing to put his hardwired suspicion aside to let her do the same. But someone desperate enough to kill doesn't want Lyn working with Atlas. Now only teamwork, trust, and courage can save two troubled hearts and the dog who loves them both....

Dogs, Military Guy & Smart female - Perfect combo
For me the most troubling aspect was having 2 narrators--who would read the entire chapter--and all voices. Then the other narrator would read the next chapter--and all the voices. I think either one could have read the entire story and it wouldn't have been so jarring. Other than that, the narrators portrayed the male and female voices clearly.
I loved the story and look forward to reading more in this series.
David and Lyn had a rough first meeting but they came together for the sake of Atlas, the dog. They both are attracted to each other, but Lyn wants to keep their relationship on a professional level. David reluctantly agrees. But the attraction grows.
Lyn's relationship with her stepfather is "odd". She was very sympathetic to David's relationship with his family--but very negative and sharp with her stepfather. At times it was like she was baiting him or looking for something to be mad about.
I loved Atlas. What a great character. He is my favorite part of the story.
I believe PD could have worked Rojas & Forte into the story more--especially as they will be in future books. Thank heavens for that! I'm ready to read the next book!

Great Story
This is the first book I have purchased by this author and can say that I really enjoyed the story. I totally fell in love with Atlas, the canine hero in the story. There was intrigue, action and romance. I have never listened to a book with two narrators before and I was surprised when each narrator just took turns reading. I assumed that the female would read the female parts and the male would read the male parts, however that did not happen. It was difficult to relate to the characters when their voices kept changing! I would have preferred that only one narrator read the same character throughout the book. I am wondering if this is common with two narrators? If so, I will be sure to only purchase books with only one narrator in the future!

Flawed Story
This just doesn't make sense. (Hard to explain the flaws without spoiling it but I will try) Lynn pulled a favor to get put in a position to work with Atlas. But shortly after arriving her room is searched and she is attacked twice. What info could she possibly have when the person in charge of this operation and the one who put her in the position to work with Atlas is the person who facilitated her access - she hadn't even been on the job more than a few hours. And the attackers threaten to do harm to her knowing who her step dad is? It just doesn't make sense. There are other serious flaws in the logic of this story. Second I didn't find Lynn's character all that likable. She comes off at times as a bitch, pushy, (e.g. the first meeting, when Atlas is taken), immature (e.g. listening at the door, pouting that David isn't telling her everything ...). This is first and foremost a romance story so it doesn't have to make sense and if you approach the book this way you won't be as disappointed. If you want suspense, action and a strong heroine this isn't the book for you. If you want a strong heroine and action try the Pike Logan series with Jennifer Cahill by Brad Taylor. I also didn't find Kristin's narration all that strong but it might have been the material she had to work with.

love Atlas
I am a dog lover and I have great respect for trainers and working dogs trained for the military. This book is a great story about such a dog who lost his handler. The story gets suspenseful by the minute as we follow David and Lyn's investigation to find out why is Atlas wanted so much by unsavoury characters. Atlas gets attached to Lyn the minute they meet and there is hope that he will recover from the loss. A few twists thrown in makes for an interesting listen. It ends up with a positive note with a HFN for David and Lyn and of course Atlas. First book from Ms. Drake and will check out the other books in the series for sure.
My first listen to the narrators and I really enjoyed their voices and variations for the characters. I will definitely check out their other audios.

Finally a Hunky Guy with a Heart
So glad someone has written an entertaining romantic suspense featuring a smart, hunky guy who loves animals and appreciates a strong confident woman.
After experiencing the horrors of war, Cruz wanted a peaceful life training dogs with his friends. Enter Lyn, who was hired by the Army to assist in rehabilitating one of their military dogs (Atlas) who was traumatized by loosing his handler.
While Cruz and Lyn had professional differences in the beginning, Cruz always treated her with gentleness, respect and admiration. Cruz was not an alpha jerk or sexual bully; he had seen enough suffering to last a lifetime.
Likewise Lyn was kind, confident and spunky - not a submissive bimbo - who managed to use keep her cool even when confronted by unexpected violence. This was my first novel by Piper J. Drake but it won't be my last.

I appreciated the story, but not the porn portions
Why an author chooses to wreck a good story with porn, is beyond me. I thought the story was engaging and kept me interested, however, when the porn portions started, I fast forwarded through the portions. I'd be interested in buying another book by this author, but don't want to pay for porn. I read the reviews on the book that follows this one, and found the same complaint in the reviews. No more of this author, for me.
