Publisher's Summary

It’s the start of something huge. From New York Times best seller Pepper Winters comes a new dark romance full of decadent angst, monstrous heroes, and pages chock-full of lust.

A house hidden in the middle of nowhere. A man who’s lived alone for a decade. A woman who trespasses on his solitude. A love full of hate, as well as hunger. The thing about my life is...I was never in control of it. I just I thought I was. I thought I had everything figured out - a good career, fun hobbies, a bright future, but everything changed when I found an ivy-cloaked house, tucked in a forgotten valley, hiding a man who corrupted my world forever.I thought I was successful, until he showed me fortune and happiness could be snatched away in an instant. I believed I was blessed, but really, I was cursed. Cursed to become a plaything for a monster. Cursed to become a prisoner just because I trespassed.

Now, I know nothing. I am nothing. I’m just his.

Please note this is a dark romance and not suitable for people who have triggers. Content included can be hard to hear and is recommended only for people who like dark romance.

Dark fairytales are the best!

I am a lover of fairy tales and my favorite is Beauty and the Beast. So when I started to listen to this new telling of the story, I was super excited. But it's nothing like the old record(yes I am dating myself) I listened to a little girl. This is so much better! Pepper Winters has used her magic and rewritten a story that is familiar, disturbing, exciting, passionate, broken, and so good, I could not stop listening. Gemma is a girl who has her own set of issues. She is able to relate to Kas like no other woman could ever do. The question is why? Kas is such the broken man. His past is horrific, his present non-existent. Until Gemma. Now where will this all go? You have to grab your own copy because the ending will shock you! Loved every minute of this dark retelling and I can't wait to see where Winters takes it from here.

Tor Thom and Charley Ongel are one of my favorite narrating teams. Winters scored when she chose them to tell this story. Kas is such the alpha, but so broken and emotional. Tor Thom brings it all out with a fabulous interpretation of his character. Dark, mean, scared, confused, it pulls out all the stops and creates the beast. Ongel has Gemma to voice, and she is just as complex. She is a loner, lonely, compassionate, afraid, determined and it all is voices with nuances that make us feel her. It's the perfect team of book and narrators and one you have to get!

What did I just read!? Pepper Winters is…. The best!!!

I am so in love with these characters! Kassel and I, however, have a love-hate relationship! He’s been so badly damaged by his past, that my heart aches for him. My husband keeps telling me it’s only a book, it’s not real…. But it feels real.. because Pepper Winters is a Master…. Or Mistress .. of creating stories so real, so heart-wrenchingly real.

When Gemma takes her first steps into Kassen’s valley…. You can feel it… feel that something terrible is going to happen!!! And it just gets better from there. It keeps you glued!!! I could not stop once I started…. I can’t explain how much I loved this.

Tor Thom and Charley Ongel are narrators I have heard often, and they did a good job with the characters.

Not a Fan of this new series

Generally, I love PW’s writing but this story just seemed to bizarre and lacked the normal chemistry and character development of her other books. It was really hard to relate or feel an emotional connection with the main male character. Let alone see why the female lead would be attracted to him while after he try’s to kill and rap her just for finding his abandoned estate hidden in a national park. Let alone his unkept appearance and short unfitting clothes. This story just didn’t do it for me.

Duet dark romance performance

In Fable of Happiness climber Gemma felt a kindred spirit to something hidden away, happy in its seclusion, harboring a loneliness despite its wild perfection. Kassen is an unhinged beast hiding away in a mansion in the Mammoth Cave National Park. He has not seen human presence in eleven years having escaped human contact all that time.
When Gemma ventured into the park her intention was to discover a new climbing adventure to post on her YouTube channel instead she trespassed upon the hidden home Kessan claimed. Kessan’s hunting skills were on high alert when he realized he had an intruder.
She became his prisoner. He knew he should get rid of her, but he wanted her too badly. Now she’s stuck in an erotic nightmare where his thirst for sex is insatiable. Here she is laughing at the ludicrousness of her situation when just before her adventure she was searching for a manly man on dating sites. Kassen is man unlike any she has come across before.

Pepper exudes a deep dark voice within her characters. Not only is this story sexually driven it’s full of pain, survival, and torment. Pepper speaks my literary language. The sex…the sex was intense and graphic and violent. Pepper shares just enough to entice the reader into reading more. Of course she writes what she knows. There’s a reason Pepper is the best selling author in the dark romance category.

Narrators:
Married team Tom Thor and Charley Ongel provide a sensational duet performance. I welcome Tor’s masculine voice bringing Kassen’s character to life.
Tor Thom is a voice-over romance actor. He’s known for his sweet soothing baritone which captures the softness of love and the deep passion of desire. His Personal motto: Seduction, one syllable at a time.
Charley Ongel has spent years behind the scenes editing and directing audiobooks. She stumbled upon narration unexpectedly.
This was a sensational performance. This was an unabridged audiobook in which I enjoyed following with my ebook. Book 1 was 7 hours 55 minutes. 25 chapters make up book 1.

If you love GREAT narration, listen to this story

wow. I am just AMAZED at how perfectly dark and sexy and just INCREDIBLE this audio was. Tor and Charley did SUCH a wonderful job recreating Kas and Gemma, I am not sure if anyone else could have done a better job. The chemistry, the intensity, the magnitude that I felt in my chest (and lady bits) during the entire story just astounded me. I loved this so much. I knew from the moment Kas ran butt naked towards Gemma in his house when she trespassed that it was going to be a wild ride and it was! That was a crazy ending that left me needing more! Cannot wait for the next story!!! 5 stars!!!

Fable of Happiness

Holy sh...
How hot is that story?

But it also has a kind of Beauty & the Beast character.
The hero with the tragic past, living far away from the civilization and the heroine who finds the house by accident and so their story begins.

The audiobook has a great narration and is worth listening to.

What I don't like is the cliffhanger, so therefore book 2 is a Must-Read for me.

A real life take on the Disney version

Imagine if Belle had actually been locked in a castle with a secluded “beast”… Dark with very mature content. You’ve been warned. I will say that I got a little annoyed with all the “c0ck slapping against thigh” and “balls” genital obsession, but it was worth trudging through. 4/5 for this book. 5/5 for the 2nd and 3rd books. Well worth the credit, finish the series. The narration is absolutely perfect. He even kind of sounds like the Beast from the Disney cartoon. 😄

I'm absolutely BLOWN AWAY

Y'all, I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of this bad boy, and I have to say that this book in audio format is EVEN BETTER. Tor & Charley absolutely brought their A-game. The way they brought Kas and Gem, the tension, terror, emotions, highs & lows, and general all-consuming angst of this story to life is otherworldly. As I listened, I was constantly on the edge of my seat wondering what would come next (and from someone who'd already read the e-book first, that's when you know you've found audio gold!), and all I can really say is FOH is absolutely amazing in any and every format. I cannot recommend it enough.

Dark, gritty, feral and beautiful

It's dark and filled with horrors - and I loved it! That was my first thought after reading Fable of Happiness. If you like dark romance you will love this book. If you you like dark tragic tales of survival you will love this book. If you love stories of lonely broken people who find their missing pieces in each other, you will love this book. But if you are afraid of a darkness that is so primal, so feral, so primitive that it drives two people to fight, maim, copulate and kill just to survive, to protect and feel alive for the first time in their lives, than this book is not for you.

Pepper Winters has created one of the darkest stories she has ever written and one of the most enigmatic characters in Kassen. A man who has cut himself off from civilization and lives with a brutal past that still haunts him. He will do anything - kill anyone to survive and protect his home.

Gemma a thrill seeking mountaineer is trying to fill a void, an emptiness one adventure at a time. She sets out on another climb hoping to chase away her loneliness.  When she gets lost on her journey and takes a wrong turn she encounters something far more dangerous than the rockiest of peaks - Kassen.

This book ends on a cliffhanger bigger than Mount Everest it's raw, gritty, violent and disturbing in a way my dark heart 🖤 craves. It has trigger warnings galore and it is not for the faint of heart. But it is lush, beautiful, sad, electric and it made my heart and pulse race with it's intensity. I can't recommend it enough to all of you brave souls that love to take a read on the dark sexy side. It will leave you breathless, shaken and wanting more.

Dark & Twisty

Story: 3 ⭐️
Steam: 5🔥 heavy smut - noncon/dubcon
Audio: 4 🎧

This book was okay. It started really strong for me but quickly felt a little boring. The dynamic between the leads was a little hard for me to believe. It was almost like instalove even though he’s tormenting her, which was a little confusing. Our male leads backstory is completely heartbreaking and I still have so many questions about his past. Our heroine doesn’t seem to have much to her so I’m interested in getting more from her as well.

I’m wondering what happens with the rest of the trilogy. I’m not totally convinced this needed to be a trilogy so we will see what else happens!

Audiobook Performance: I love the narration style, where the narrators are voicing the opposite gender even when it’s not their chapter to read. However I did feel like the narration took a little away from the story. I could never really tell how the female lead felt about the situations becomes the narration was almost always a seductive tone, even when the writing didn’t really seem to need that.

Gripping with a whole lot of WTH

I am always a little torn reading books written by this author. Because they never EVER hold back and I forget sometimes that this is dark dark and then I'm hit with FOH and..yeah this is for sure a PW book. It's very insular, being that Gemma and Kasen are practically the only characters in the story and Kasen is certainly not the faint of heart. This won't be a book for everyone and I get that, but I found it difficult to put it down despite the less than savoury sections. This is the first in a trilogy so I'm expecting it to get darker before the light shines. Check for triggers warnings if you need them because this goes there. You've been warned. I volunteered to listen to a complimentary copy of this. All opinions are my own.
