Story
There are four characters in every story: the victim, the villain, the hero, and the guide. These four characters live inside us. If we play the victim, we’re doomed to fail. If we play the villain, we will not create genuine bonds. But if we play the hero or guide, our lives will flourish. The hard part is being self-aware enough to know which character we are playing. In this book, Donald will use his own experiences to help you recognize if the character you are currently surfacing is helping you experience a life of meaning.

We all have a longing to be significant. We want to make a contribution, to be a part of something noble and purposeful. But many people wrongly believe significance is unattainable. They worry that it's too big for them to achieve. That they have to have an amazing idea, be a certain age, have a lot of money, or be powerful or famous to make a real difference. The good news is that none of those things is necessary for you to achieve significance and create a lasting legacy.

We often treat the word capacity as if it were a natural law of limitation. Unfortunately most of us are much more comfortable defining what we perceive as off limits rather than what's really possible. Could it be that many of us have failed to expand our potential because we have allowed what we perceive as capacity to define us? What if our limits are not really our limits?

Life-changing perspective
To some of you, this book might be basic stuff but for me this was life-changing. I find myself listening to it over and over. I am hoping that the concepts will finally sink in. Until about a year ago, I really had never truly failed. When I finally did, I handled it in the worst way possible. I pretty much did everything that the author tells you not to do. I ended up making the situation way worst than it was originally. When I listened to this book, it was like a wake up call. I only wished that I had come across it earlier.

Fairly Good
Good listen about failure and changing your perspective in relation to it. The focus of the book is failure is actually a good event. However, this is abridged and it shows. Many chapters are barely mentioned. It felt like you were rushed through the book.

Nice and encouraging
The concept of failing forward is nice and encouraging. But the book is storybased and the points mainly summarized by the phrase "try, try and try again". The stories told underline this point. If you just keep trying you will inevitably succeeded. It’s a bit annoying that the author doesn’t take into account that, because some made it through hardship and failure, some will not.
The book is very one-dimensional, focusing almost entirely on the goals such as earning money or/and recognition from the "outside" world.
It doesn’t discuss what our dreams and goals are made of. Perhaps some goals which you are failing to achieve could use some investigation. Perhaps the goals are not truly yours but put upon you by others/surroundings, or perhaps you have stopped believing in yourself making it (unconsciously) impossible for you to success. The book does thought, point out that your attitude toward your goals is important.
The superficial approach of the book makes it a bit uninteresting, extraneous and lengthy.
But the book is nice and encouraging. And on a long, lonely night with some recent failures troubling you, I'm sure it will bring you some pleasant comfort.

Baby boomer blast!
Standard ideas from positive psychological roots. I liked it, though square shoulders and positive thinking are not always the keys to success, and people most often don't give up because the principles herein are lost upon them. Instead, the type A red, western greed, as a chief token of success is not invalid, it just is limited to those types of people. Personally, though I identify with the principles in this writ, I do not believe that any exercising of will, to a deliberate good, is key. Instead, Christ himself is key, and secularizing the gospel, in order to appeal to the widest audience is a position that promises what it cannot ultimately provide.
Still, in hopes that the forgetting of self will cause one to flow unto Heaven, I support the concepts herein, save only, the fact that the tone of the presentation will call upon the carnal ambition to "succeed" in promising wealth and empire, rather than smaller stewardships of smaller community style entrepreneurs; and for that, I shrug, and wonder at the state of man.

Best 3 hours this week
Would you consider the audio edition of Failing Forward to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the printed version. The way that Mr. Maxwell tells a story it would definitely be better to have the audio version. His voice and his ability to make you feel as part of his private group is great.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Failing Forward?
The story of Dave was one of the most memorable parts. This gentleman started a couple places to eat and enjoy the atmospheres that you would be more than happy to take pictures of the place and proud to be in his creations.
What does John C. Maxwell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His love for helping people. You can hear it in his voice. He is full of energy, yet he knows how to release it at the right times in the right amount.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Yes You CAN!
Any additional comments?
Have a few pieces of paper and a pen or pencil with you as you read this great book. Also share what you learn with your loved ones. It is not worth learning something if you don't apply it.

Not life changing
Maybe my expectations were a little bit high but I feel this book was more about overcoming adversity than it was about failing forward. Maybe that's the same thing I don't know. It's basically some anecdotes about people not giving up and eventually succeeding at something. It does make you think a bit though. Overall I feel this book is more for teenagers. It might make them realize that most successful people are not these gods that somehow received a position they can never achieve, but were at some point also beginners.
