Mimi and Alex are a good team. I enjoy the stories most when the couples are sweet and kind to one another, like this book and The Work Of Art, also written by this author. I also like that this is a clean romance novel.

So Damn Sweet
Mimi Matthews is my favorite author! Wyndham is my favorite narrator! highly recommend! Mimi writes her characters so authentic and genuine, the emotion and the *moderate* drama so believable and immersive, and Alex Wyndham performs it all so beautifully, I never get so lost as in one of her stories and especially as read by him!

Just an outstanding story that I loved!
Fair as a Star is an amazing story of a beautiful woman dealing with a mental illness. You don't really think of love stories in Victorian England and mental health issues. This love story brings together two people who love and complement each other despite the struggles and are better for it. I lice a story where the characters are not perfect.

Missed the mark
I love Mimi Matthews' Parish Orphans series. "The Matrimonial Advertisement" is one of my favorite books ever. I've read and listened to it four times. I also love "The Work of Art."
Sadly, this book really missed the mark for me. I just wasn't invested in the characters or the story.

A beautiful study of depression, love & acceptance
Mimi Matthews really is an incredibly talented writer. Something I love so much about her is her uncanny ability to capture the plight of women in the past, but also the potential for women—even in times gone by—to find fulfillment and happiness in their lives, and to self-actualize. I was reluctant about Fair as a Star because I knew it dealt with depression and didn’t want to be overly bogged down by what people with depression had to endure, and still endure. I also didn’t know how something as intense or fraught with difficulty as “acute melancholia,” an unfitting betrothal, and a strong case of forbidden longing could be resolved in a few hours. Somehow it is not rushed, is beautifully presented as a story of understanding and hope and ties a touching love story into the bargain. Alex Wyndham is, of course, perfect. I don’t doubt we will get more Matthews/Wyndham collabs as her future books come out—either way this very quick listen is still work the credit. Very possibly, it might eclipse some of her other work it is so gently wonderful.
Ps. In the, likely fruitless, hope that Mimi Matthews reads reviews: you are so adept at the Victorian world and writing historical fiction. You are a committed, highly competent researcher and storyteller. But your gift shouldn’t be confined to this period alone! You should try your hand at other points in history like... maybe... perhaps... 17th century Britain might tickle you? Because it is a very turbulent and interesting time religiously, politically, and for especially for women.... and I feel like you could explore womanhood in this period with such aplomb. Just a thought, either way you have my loyalty!
