Publisher's Summary

Legendary story teller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higherfor their world or ours.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was 10, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. Then, when Charlie is 17, he meets a dog named Radar and his aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from it.

Charlie starts doing jobs for Mr. Bowditch and loses his heart to Radar. Then, when Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. What Bowditch knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world.

King's storytelling in Fairy Tale soars. This is a magnificent and terrifying tale about another world than ours, in which good is pitted against overwhelming evil, and a heroic boy—and his dog—must lead the battle.

Real world part great, Fairy tale part, average.

Narration was good and really liked the first section, classic King character building. But the fantasy parts were kind of boring.

A Masterclass in Preamble

People who want to cut to the chase and are purveyors of fine instant gratification won't like this book.

What King does so extraordinarily is to build two worlds and to make you feel like you are right there. Plus you will fall in love with a dog- and if you have a dog of your own you will find yourself hugging it and loving it while you listen. You will also give it extra treats.

The narration was some of the best I've experienced... all I can say is it's totally rad.

Finishing this book hasn't sunk in yet and I'm still at a loss for words and reassimilating into normal life. I'm buying a copy to read myself so I can experience it in another way. I feel sad and lost like the well has closed forever.

Second half hard to follow

I love King in general, with Eyes of the Dragon being one of my all time favourite books. The story build beautifully, peppered with true King suspense. Unfortunately I found the fairytale portion of the book less engaging and difficult to follow. Would love to see more fantasy novels from King in the future.

Classic Stephen King

I thoroughly enjoyed this listen! it felt a lot like The Dark Tower, which is an all-time favourite and was written in such a way that I am sure that 90% of readers visualised the characters and their and their backdrop in much the same way. it was my first time listening to Seth and the attention to detail did its part in bringing the characters to life.

Long days and pleasant nights.

A real fairy tale

Absolutely loved Fairy Tale! As a lover of Stephen King and a long time fan this was a little different to the stories I’ve come to love but it was amazing! Again I was transported into a world I had yet to discover and I was transfixed from the very beginning. Thank you!

Phenomenal!

A fantastical adventure narrated with perfection. King’s Fairy Tale completely swept me away, and I can’t wait to listen to it again. An absolute masterpiece.

Not great, not bad

The story took a very long time to get into the fantasy part, and when it did I felt very underwhelmed. The book was fine but pretty average overall.

HUGE SK fan - feel cheated - what happened?

I am a huge SK fan - even the books/genres that did not appeal to me - where still incredibly considered and developed.
What happened to this ? 24 hours (and yes I listened to it all) hanging in there because "any minute now the actual story is going to come " ..... hoping for the King magic - but alas it was only MEH.....
I could hear/see at least 5 other of Mr Kings books making a showing in this everlasting book in some form or other (so no new and original idea's) and even identified JK Rowlings "dementors" from Harry Potter when the guards of the palace are featured.
One cannot fault as always the beautiful words and wit and the narrative choice which was top notch.
This is literally the first time I have EVER felt so strongly disappointed that I have actually made the effort to write a review. After all the you cant always get it right - But man ... Mr. King is a sure thing - you never walk away disappointed ....
My monthly audible credit is a massive luxury - one I DEEPLY regret using for this book

Loved this novel from start to finish. Wonderful narration, and a story that takes you to another universe.

This was surprisingly disappointing

I started this book with high hopes and in the beginning, I wasn't let down. It felt like this was going to be like 'The Talsiman' and 'Wind through the Keyhole' mashed together but by the time we get into the other land and past the sundial, I was completely let down. Nothing exciting happened except a single chase scene and I was totally fed up with hearing that we are getting a translated language every time somebody says a slang word, a number, or reads a sign!

I am a constant reader and this will be the first time in over 20 years I haven't finished a King book.

Not his best

I am a big Stephen King reader but this story did not work for me. With many of his other books the story took me in and suspension of disbelief was total. In this case it did not happen. The only emotion I felt was for the dog in the story, the other characters felt flat.

Incredible

Despite working full time, I managed to finish this 24hr audiobook within 5 days (to the detriment of both my sleep and relationship lol). Easily my favorite Stephen King book in recent memory. Despite taking almost 9 hours to actually get to the "fairy tale" part, this book was absolutely captivating from start to finish. The narrator was perfect as well. I found myself whooping, crying and laughing throughout. There were times I was so stressed that I had to physically stop what I was doing because I was so engrossed in the story.

Do not be put off by the length! I haven't been this enthralled by an audiobook in a while. A smashing 5 star book.

"Nah-nah"

Much of the book takes place in the real world and once you get to the fairytale world, there is little time for world building. If you're looking to explore some of King's works that are newer, stick with Billy Summers, Later and/or The Institute.

wonder full

Loved this adult (?) fairy tale. It's been a while since magic, goodness & evil, feisty people & talking animals, nasty critters have passed my way. I'm pleased I can still appreciate those uplifting tales of 'derring-do', princes & princesses, monsters & large insects! Was VERY caught up in the journey.

Good dark magical adventure

I liked how one half of this long tale had no magic, then the second half did. Like two very long books in one. It was a very engrossing read through the characters’ personalities and struggles. But the best part is this was an adventure. Fights, journeys, magic, discoveries. And like any fairytale whether dark or light, this too had a happy ending.

Cringey and derivative

Who is this aimed at? Adults? It's way to stupid. Kids? Way too long. Teens? Way too cringe.

It starts off well. The world building is phenomenal and sucks you in but the Fairy Tale bit is just awful. There's no tension, you know how it's going to go as King follows every Fairy Tale trope there is. None of it makes any sense or stands up to any logic. And Yes we get it " That's not what he said but what I heard".

One of King's worst. Time to retire.

I expected more I think - it wasn't bad and I saw it through but I was relieved when it ended - I thought the whole thing was a bit weird and disjointed when it had potential to be great - see what you think

Great first half, but the fantasy was flat.

Very strong start, the build up to the fantasy was exciting and kept me listening far longer than I usually would, but as soon as the fantasy element is revealed and that section of the book began it all feels a little flat and half hearted. A love letter to fairy tales but without the love. I kept thinking that it felt like 'Later' by Stephen King and 'Elantris' by Branden Sanderson had been stuck together and this was the result. 3/5 star book for me, fantastic performance by the narrator and King 5 star in that respect.

Skip the first 45min. Or first 2h 45min

It's a standard mother dies in a "goddamned" tragedy on the "goddamned bridge" continued with the typical Drunk grieving father. After a prayer the boy makes... Father go's to AA. Kid goes to high school.

Annnnnnnd then the goddamned story begins...

Also, if you're not American... The over usage of unknown brand names, or should I say Acronyms, is just goddamned annoying.

As is all the "goddamned" things in this book! Seriously talk about an over used phrase.

May alter review.... Let's wait n see... But definitely save yourself 45 goddamned minutes n skip ahead.

Man falls off ladder. Boy Heard dog. Man goes to hospital. Boy watches over dog. Boy become angry man's BFF. House needs work......... Zzzzzz Zzzz

Sadly after 2h n 45min I've given up.
While it's well written... I'm bored to death. So very very long winded and as a woman in late 30s it's unrelatable.

Not a fairy tale... I won't need any more guided meditation to send me to sleep... Because this book does it!

Goodnight

What a great book!!💕

Wow, thank you Stephen King…this book is fabulous. The narration was perfect, really well done. I couldn’t stop listening.
I’ve read all of Stephen Kings book, and I’d definitely put this one up there among the best. A couple of little references to The Dark Tower gave me shivers, and Fairytale reminded me a little of The Talisman (which I also love). Highly recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Not one of his best

I’m a long time fan of Stephen King but this book is just not up to it. The characters are two dimensional and a lazy cliché. I didn’t care if any of them lived or died, I just wanted it to end. The whole thing was predictable and dull.

Stephen King at his storytelling best

One of my favourite books is another fantasy written by Stephen King, “The Eyes of the Dragon”. He does this genre so well. Loved every page, wanted it to on and on!

A Fantastic Fairytale

I loved this tale, it was one of those stories that you need to finish but you never want to end,
I've listened to and enjoyed a few Steven King stories by now and while this had a few of his trade mark notes, it felt so different to his usual writing. the Narrator does a really great job with this story as well, I felt completely submerged in this world and I didn't want to come up for air.
More please Mr King :)

Exciting concept - great start

Enjoyable story which kept me entertained. However from about half way it dragged along without much excitement. Lots of characters were introduced who failed to fully become part of the overall plot. Some very clever and original ideas well developed, but again a bit too much of a grind for most of the second half.
