Publisher's Summary

From the author of The Boys’ Club, a gripping novel set in the high-stakes world of art forgery that moves across the globe, from the trendy art galleries of Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood to the high-flying international art fairs of Hong Kong.

Can you spot the difference?

Emma Caan is a fake.

She’s a forger, an artist who specializes in 19th-century paintings. But she isn’t a criminal; her copies are commissioned by museums and ultra-wealthy collectors protecting their investments. Emma’s more than mastered a Gauguin brushstroke and a van Gogh wheat field, but her work is sometimes a painful reminder of the artistic dreams she once chased for herself, when she was younger and before her family and her world fell apart.

When oligarch art collector Leonard Sobetsky unexpectedly appears with an invitation, Emma sees a way out - a new job, a new path for herself, and access to the kind of money she needs to support her unstable and recently widowed mother.

But every invitation incurs an obligation...and Emma isn’t prepared for what’s to come. As she’s pulled further into Leonard’s opulent scene, she will discover what’s lurking beneath the glitz and glamour. When she does, the past she’s worked hard to overcome will collide with the present, making her wonder how much of her carefully curated life is just as fake as her forgeries....

Best book ! Couldn't stop listening !!

Love this book and this author. I was on the edge of my seat and enjoyed it from start to finish! I can't wait for more Erica Katz books. She tells a great story and weaves past and present together seamlessly. It was also fun to learn more about a side of the art world I didn't know existed. Highly recommend !!

Predicable & Anticlimactic

This book was a let down and I would not recommend it to friends.

The main characters fail to demonstrate any complexity with simple story lines saturated in non-sensical naivety making the entire read hard to stomach. The narration is so-so, the back and forth conversation with the FBI is like nails on a chalkboard. The entire storyline is very predicable from the start. After about 3 hours I seriously considered throwing in the towel but proceeded on; it got mildly interesting about 6 hours in before coming to sharp conclusion an hour later. I really enjoyed the Boys Club and was excited for this book to come out but it missed the mark.

The biggest bummer is the premise of this story ‘counterfeit art in a modern world’ has so much potential but it's pretty clear where it's headed when Emma -a naive, art copier who is constantly seeking approval and attention via social media and fake friends caused by long-ago daddy issues meets a Russian billionaire who likes to buy copied art and then sell it..... sprinkle the FBI interrogation into the first chapter and it's pretty clear how the entire story will unfold.

BORING

I really tried to get through this quickly and it shouldn't have taken me as long as it did to read this but unfortunately here we are. This was interesting at first but then it got boring and just dumb. Narrator wasn't good either.

Boring

It had potential, but was so boring. There was no build up, and the ending was not satisfying.

Was Hoping for a Twist

I was captivated for the most part. The narrative was intriguing, but the naivety was irritating. I loved the detail given about this exorbitant lifestyle. The detail and passion for art in this novel really left an impression. But the storyline itself needed some sort of twist. I was hoping it wouldn’t be as directly obvious as it looked in the very first chapter. I decided to rewrite an ending with more intrigue for myself.

Still worth a listen though! The character’s and their backstories are intriguing even though they’re predictable. I did enjoy the book overall.

May try your patience

Had potential but but the emotions and perspective of the main character were flat. Not enough punch-in-the gut action or insight about the true nature of going through such an ordeal. Two dimensional.

Horrible

One of the most painfully trite stories I’ve ever listened to. A testament to patience if you can bare to finish it.

Even better than her first!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book & even thought the narration was perfection; which is incredible in & of itself considering her first book was narrated by one of my favorites, Julia Whelan. The storyline is so original & captivating. Loved loved this book. Can’t wait for her next one!!
