Publisher's Summary

Working at Bliss, Sarah Harrison deals with all sorts of...interesting clientele. Yet no one sparks her interest more than Jared Gaines, the ultra-rich, ultra-sexy businessman who frequents her shop, buying delicate little “gifts” for the women in his life.

But one day, Jared sends Sarah a gift from Bliss. Then another - and another. So when Sarah walks into his office demanding to know why, he makes her an offer she somehow can’t refuse: be his fake girlfriend for the weekend while attending his brother’s engagement party.

The next thing Sarah knows, she’s in San Francisco pretending to be in love with Jared. Not that it’s a hardship. Once you get the man away from the office, he’s much more relaxed. Sweet. Funny. Even...thoughtful? Oh, and sexier than ever, of course.

Their pretend relationship feels very real, very quickly. Soon Sarah’s in over her head. Could what she and Jared share turn into something real? Or is it all actually...fake?

Dnf: I will never get back the hours I wasted here

To be fair, maybe its just a style/taste difference; it has plenty of good reviews and the trope is common enough, so maybe its just me. But I am going to be honest, so if you don't want to read negativity, then this review isn't for you

What I liked: the male narrator did ok. His parts were short and his voice wasn't what I imagined stiff, stoic (personality-less) Jared to be, but he was ok. The female narrator was expressive (sometimes a bit over the top), but her version of men's dialogue was *shiver* not great. Otherwise the narrators weren't bad.

What I did not like: (and there may be mild spoilers up to Ch. 25)

The plot of a single billionaire obsessing over a normal girl, spoiling her absolutely rotten, pursuing her blindly and yet still retaining his dignity somehow does not always work. In this book's case, it didn't at all.

Sarah is a pretty typical tropey romance heroine: she martyrs herself and her future for her younger siblings after their parents died tragically. She works at a fancy lingerie store where she meets our hero, Jared: a two-dimensional attractive billionaire with a dominant side who shops there all the time. He randomly starts buying Sarah lingerie (totally inappropriately) then, when confronted by her, he somehow convinces her to attend a family event across the country for the weekend with him (thus the 'Fake Date' thing). In the book there is about as much logical progression in that plotline as I am giving it - as in, head scratching, huh?

The two are supposed to 'hate' each other for some reason that is never really explained. Sarah doesn't like Jared because he is presumably a player. Jared... Well, he never seems to like or dislike her. He just wants to see Sarah naked. He buys her Loubaton shoes, and those are discussed at GreAt length, over and over and ov-- ugh. The shoes. We get it.

The first half of the book pretty much consists of the characters sitting at restaurants, coffee shops and storpping. The characters hash out and rehash everything; how Sarah feels is the main topic. How wishy-washy she is about Jared is explored ad nauseum, but lets not forget the shoes.

I kept thinking once she get so San Fran it will pick up, things will HapPeN. But they eat dinner, breakfast, go to another coffee shop... And talk. What do they talk about?

How Sarah is going to fix this grown @$$ man. Thats what. She gets huffy because he is rude, he doesn't like his stepmom, he is short to his sister. And Sarah thinks its her place to set him straight. When she sits with her arms crossed and snipes out a list of all the things Jared needs to apologize for or she won't date him, I was DoNe. She went from a bit mousey and whiney to being a self-righteous you-know-what. And Jared goes from being a jerk of a man to being a doormat in a few chapters. Gross.

So basically, this book is pure, 100% wish-fullfillment escapism for every girl who dreams of some filthy rich dude tirelessly pursuing her, buying her ridiculously priced shoes, and bowing to her every whim. Definitely not for me.

Tried but Couldn’t

I really tried to get into this book but it never hooked me. 15 chapters in and I had no feelings for the heroine and didn’t like the guy. It’s shouldn’t take that long for me to get invested into the book. I’m going to delete and move on. Good thing this was part of Audible Plus.

I don’t have the words to describe how horrible

This book is bad. I had to stop mid way thru. Did not want to waste time on finishing. Narrators were fine but could not save the book

Love This!

well performed, well written and just a wonderful story. I find it difficult to write reviews of books because it can be hard to not give spoilers.
This story made me laugh, made me cry, and made me swoon. This is a great romance.

The writing was awful.

Honestly the worst part was the way the story was written. It was in third person but switched viewpoint and also had inner monologue. It was so disjointed and confusing. It didn’t make any sense. Also I think the author just discovered the word “incredulous” because it’s used constantly. I was on board for a cheesy/cringey/predictable romance trope, but I couldn’t get past how bad and whiney the writing was. I didn’t finish it. I’m glad it was free.

Stupid

I couldn’t finish this book. The characters are one dimensional and lack any substance. The characters are so over the top melodramatic that it’s sickening. Most of the time I was yelling ‘come on’ or ‘Geeze’ that’s just stupid. Don’t waste your time on this one.

Not a fan

There are lots of terrible messages about masculinity and femininity in this book. Lots of possessive language from the male character which objectifies the female character and contributes to intimate partner violence and possessiveness. Monica Murphy sounds like a burgeoning feminist who’s not aware of her use of problematic language. Monica - take the time to read some real feminist books before writing another one of these! Women like Bell Hooks, Kimberle Crenshaw, Audre Lorde. I know this is supposed to be a light fun romance novel but you could have achieved this by leaving the majority of your work as is and just removing the problem language like “claiming her” and “all mine” etc. Readers: if you’re aware that this is problematic it is a fine source of entertainment, similar quality to a reality tv show- just don’t expect anything more.

Not For Me.

This story was mediocre at best. The narration, terrible. Even the reason for the breakup (there’s ALWAYS a breakup in a romance novel) was ridiculous. I got bored around chapter 25, and while I enjoy the concept of a fake date, these characters were not particularly likable in any way. None of the characters were. This book was just not right in any way for me.

Enjoyable listening

Savannah and James did a great job bringing Jared and Sarah's story to life.

While I didn't particularly like Jared for a lot of the book, I really enjoyed Sarah as a character.
After the loss she has suffered, she has worked hard to provide for her family, so to see her taking something for herself was rewarding.

While Jared was generous, he was such a grump. I could understand why he went about things the way he did, after learning about his past, but still... such a grump!
You can't help but be drawn in by Candice, she is a gem.
Much like Sarah, she is almost the opposite of her brother and wears her heart on her sleeve.
Again, props to the group of friends for providing some much-needed perspective and all the drinks.

I can't wait to listen to Candice's story!

Poor writing

I chose this because its two of my favourite tropes. I wish I hadn't persevered, it didn't get better.

Pleasant enough……🤔

I liked the story, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as the last MM books I listened to.

The characters had great potential, but I personally felt the male narrator didn’t seem convincing as the alpha lead or gel well with Savannah Peachwood. To be fair, he has a nice voice and narrated well, but I don’t think he was the right fit for this male lead character, something just seemed off 🤔
That’s entirely my personal opinion and why I gave it 4 not 5 stars.

I listen with earbuds, but I found myself constantly tuning out and then having to go back and listen again to go over the parts I’d missed.

Sadly, it wasn’t as enjoyable as I had hoped or previously experienced with other MM books. ☹️

Creepy rich guy is a regular customer at an upscale lingerie shop. One day he starts sending sexy stuff to a shop girl. Then they end up together.
You're welcome!

Loved it

This is the first Monica Murphy book I’ve listened to/read and I couldn’t put it down. The only gripe I have is that I would have loved Sarah to give Jarad more of a piece of her mind at the end. But I guess she’s more mature than me, so there’s that lol. My next listen will absolutely be from this author.

Captivating

This book was brilliant. I've now read the hard copy as well as listen to the audio and both were so well done. The story itself pulls you in and you can't help but fall in love with the characters.
