Definitely Dark

Well, yes. We were warned, I just didn't realise how far into darkness Benedict Jacka was going to go with this one. Parts I should have known, the hints were there from previous books, I just didn't pick up on the Drakh bit.

Definitely NOT a book to start with, there is too much back story for anyone to understand a lot of the book unless they've listened to (or read) the previous books. It's almost as if characters from every book made an appearance in this one (maybe they did, I lost count).

Beautifully narrated as usual by Gildart Jackson, although some of the voices changed from previous books. I think that's been commented on before regarding previous books.

In some ways this is a rough book to listen to, it takes away so much that Alex has worked for. I'm trying not to give anything away in this review so I won't list anything else. It does, however, leave the reader with a bit of a cliffhanger ending, of which I'm not fond - especially when we have to wait probably a year for the next book.

The writing is powerful, character development for Alex is taken several steps further and, to be honest, it's a bit of a rollercoaster as far as emotions go.

Better than the Dresden files

If you love the Dresden files like me and read every one 10 times, you will like this even better, I thought it wasn’t possible, but wow 😳

Brilliant storyline

This one really steps it up for all the lead characters and is my favourite of the series so far, well worth reading the first ones though as they set the scene. Perfect for Jim Butcher fans too.

Closing in on the big finale

After the story became a bit repetitive in the last couple of books, it takes a turn and changes pace in the this volume. Finally there is some progress and we get a peak at some of Richard's big plans. Good Performance be Gildart Jackson, who I enjoy as a narrator. It feels as if he had ever so slightly changed his intonation on Arachne though. I'd really love for these books to be translated into a TV series. I struggle with all the different characteristics of Elsewhere and its probably easier to understand in a visual medium.

What has happened to the narration??

The book is great, the story is fantastic and fast paced. It should be a thoroughly enjoyable listen but the narrator, who started off the series so well, has completely lost his way. Initially there were distinctive voices for each of the main characters, while not in the league of some of the vocal performers I’ve listened to, I could tell one character from another. The lines between characters have become more blurred in recent additions and as many have noted, arakni has turned into a dalek. I could handle all of that, as while it may have hampered may immersion into the story somewhat, it didn’t hamper my ability to follow the story itself. This has unfortunately changed with fallen.

I now find myself getting lost in conversations between certain characters. Anne sounds exactly like Alex, which seems to be the narrator’s normal voice. Chalice somehow developed an Indian accent and now sounds exactly like a less angry Veri. Arakni is worse then ever. It’s as if the narrator has completely forgotten his initial readings. Maybe it’s worse since I’m binging the series one book after the other so the memory of the past incarnations of the characters is fresh and the new ones feel ridiculously off kilter.

If it had been this bad from book one I would have likely never made it this far. May have to finish the series in paperback to save me from trying to follow AnnAlex’s further adventures in butchering a conversation.

Bored now

The first books were interesting enough that I overlooked the self-indulgent mansplaining the main character keeps doing. I attributed the portrayal of the female characters as either weak or stupid to mostly due to the narrator's pitch. But this book was looooong. Drawn out battle scenes (think marvel avengers long) and the endless posturing bored me far more than the storyline interested me. The female characters were uniformly laughable this time, as if the author really can't imagine a strong female unless she is also crazy. As I realized most of the way through that I really don't care whether Verus lives or dies, it's obvious the series deserves no more of my time. I'm guessing the target audience is teenage boys.

Finally Back On Track

After the last two books, I was starting to feel that the story had lost its way. But now that I’ve listened this, I realise that it’s finally back on track and quite possibly leading to a grand finale. In fact, if the story had continued, we could have had the grand finale now! But, I guess that this is the way to make the money roll in. LOL.

There is still more story to tell, there are some things that need to be tied up and tidied up. So if the next book is the Grand finale I really hope that he takes his time and writes a real showstopper! One that simultaneously tidies things up, and satisfies our enjoyment of the world we have travelled through with Alex and co-.

I also hope that the Narrator gets his mojo back! It’s been a bit suspect over the past three stories - struggling with the female roles…

Decent story with small surprises

I like this series (obviously) and this book was fitting. I can‘t really point my finger on why it only got 4 stars, but somehow it lost a bit of its flair, despite being well written and enjoyable to listen to.
