Publisher's Summary

I’ve loved Calder Cruz from the moment he taught me how to fly. Racing down a mountain and giving me the release I so desperately needed. My understanding. My safe space.

Hadley has fought for a life of her own ever since her sister’s kidnapping. When she was drowning in expectations and family pressures, Calder was always the one who understood her.

Until one night changed it all. From best friends to strangers in a single breath.

She’s like a fire that lives inside me. Even when I thought it was all burned out, there were still embers that lived in my bones.

Calder knows what it’s like to almost lose the people he loves most. He’ll never make that kind of mistake again. Working at the fire station and taking care of his daughters are the only things he needs.

All it takes is a single moment to make him realize how wrong he is. A split second of coming close to losing the woman he has always loved.

But as long-buried embers light anew, there are those who lurk in the shadows. And they’ll do whatever it takes to extinguish that flame for good....

So captivating!!

I adored this story, Calder and Hadley are adorable together and I was rooting hard for them. Calder is a single dad and a fireman. I could not get enough of his adorable girls. They were so different but both so completely sweet in their own ways. Hadley is Hayes's (from book 1, Tattered Stars) younger sister. She's an adventure seeker, searching for that adrenaline rush all the time. Which all comes from being so overprotective by her parents. All 4 of these amazing characters are hurting and they need the other 3 to help heal.

I fell in love with this group of characters and spent an entire weekend devouring both book 1 and Falling Embers. Catherine Cowles really reminded me of Nora Roberts' latest romantic suspenseful books. There was friendship,  love, and a bad guy. I fell for Cowles writing and am a devoted fan now. The narration by Vanessa Edwin and Joe Arden were beyond amazing. Edwin was able to be fun and carefree, while still being able to show a more vulnerable side. Arden just does no wrong. He could narrate a pig for 6 hours and I'd still listen and rave!

Captivating & Swoon-Worthy Romance

5/5⭐️ 5/5🎧 3.5/5🌶

I am obsessed with Catherine Cowles’ flavor of romantic suspense! Falling Embers kept me guessing from start to finish and blew me away! It is refreshingly unexpected, pulse-pounding, and enchanting. It is a slow-burn romance intertwined with a brewing storm of suspense. Falling Embers is an adventurous, unrequited love, passionate small-town romance.

“You’re the last person I’d ever want to hurt…You were my air.”

Calder never imagined that the outlet he introduced Hadley to would be the lifeline that fuels her soul. Calder is a single dad firefighter haunted by a horrific incident that upturned his life. Hadley is the EMT he distanced himself from when her lifestyle and his fears created a chasm in their friendship. Now, hidden threats prowl in Wolf Gap that could draw the two together or tear them apart forever. The magnetism between Hadley and Calder is palpable. Cowles has an exquisite talent for writing heartbreaking, exhilarating, steamy romance with a dark twist. She writes amazing characters that stay with you long after you finish her books, Hadley and Calder are no exception. Calder is the consummate book boyfriend you’ll want to curl up with and Hadley is my new favorite book bestie!

Joe Arden & Vanessa Edwin are fantastic in this riveting, heartwarming, emotionally raw audiobook! He brings Calder’s sweet, tormented, protective persona to life so sensationally, that I was affected in a visceral way. Joe seductively growling “little daredevil” is one of my new favorite things. Vanessa embodies the courageous, charismatic, withdrawn, effulgent persona of Hadley. Her organically emotional narration of Hadley’s complex character is incredible. Cathrine Cowles’ vivid imagery and beautiful storytelling brought to life by Joe and Vanessa creates a truly immersive experience for the listener.

Loved Calder and Hadley so much!!

Catherine Cowles is the queen of small town romantic suspense! Falling Embers was full of mystery, danger, and so much SWOON! Seriously, the town of Wolfgap is full of hunky protective men, that will do whatever it takes for the ones they love, and I am here for it. This audio gripped my attention and latched onto my heart from start to finish, and I didn't want it to end.

Joe Arden and Vanessa Edwin narrate this audiobook. Joe and Vanessa are some of my favorites, and they made me feel every bit a part of Calder and Hadley's world. Joe Arden's performance showcased Calder's brave, loyal, and protective sides to put his daughters first, and fall head over heels in love with Hadley. Hadley is such a fierce, strong, and determined heroine that Vanessa Edwin brought to life flawlessly! Vanessa's melodic voice is simply mesmerizing! Joe and Vanessa convey Calder and Hadley's intense passion for each other which will make your heart melt in all best ways!

Overall, I LOVED this book. If you are a fan of small town romantic suspense with a hot hunky single firefighter dad, an independent adamant little daredevil, adorable twin girls, baking, mountain biking, sweet seductive steamy times, plot twists, jealousy, heart pounding danger, and a HEA that will leave you feeling deliciously gooey inside, then you will love Calder and Hadley's story! I'm looking forward to more from Catherine Cowles!

Such an amazing story

Anyone else have an author that just snuck up on you and now you can’t get enough of them? Because that’s Catherine Cowles for me, and let me just say… I am IN LOVE with her writing!

Falling Embers is the story of Hadley and Calder. HELLOOOOO BROTHER’S BEST FRIEND!! Hadley did not have the most desirable childhood. After her sister was kidnapped, her mom went into protective mode and never wanted her kids out of her sight. Something that definitely was not enjoyed by Hadley, who just wanted to LIVE. So when Calder taught her how to take risks, she was in heaven. She just never thought that LIVING would drive a wedge between her and him.

This book was so addicting. I loved seeing how Hadley refused to do anything but be who she wanted to be. So many people wanted her to change her lifestyle to fit in better but she absolutely refused. I also liked seeing Calder learn how to pull the stick out of his rear end. His past definitely scarred him, but he found a way to push it to the side in order to get what he really wanted.

Calder and Hadley - Must Listen Series!

Falling Embers - Book 2 in the Tattered and Torn Series was just as captivating as book one! Friends to lovers, sibling's best friend, small-town romantic suspense!

Calder and Hadley have embedded themselves in my heart and a story that will always be with me. Their journey is one with plenty of angst and emotions - your heart will break a little but the end will mend it all back together. I adored Hadley's relationship with Calder's twins such a sweet and loving side of Hadley shown even when she was at odds with Calder. This wouldn't be a CC book without some mystery/suspense and I felt it flowed well with the storyline with romance and unraveled bit by bit along with the family drama between Hadley and her mom. Overall another great listen that I would highly recommend, A captivating storyline that kept me wanting more and on the edge of my seat. Wolf Gap is now one of my favorite small towns and I can't wait to listen to the remaining books.

audiobook narrated by Joe Arden and Vanessa Edwin and I have no complaints! They were great at bringing the characters and story to life for me and I fell in love with everything about Falling Embers!

Surprising

The relationship between Ca,lla and Hardley seems genuine not to mention, Calla came across as innocent. At ant rate, Vanessa Edwin was great! Joe, on the other hand is becoming as expected? Meaning a somber sound. Yes, I love him to death, but he's loosing his luster

Wonderfully Fluid

This story is absolutely angsty but it flows just like a babbling brook. There were some parts of the story that were made painfully obvious to distract you from the real person behind things.

The focus on his ex was the distraction and I wasn’t shocked when she did something really stupid to get attention.

I wasn’t truly expecting the character that blew Hadley’s world up at the end. When they were revealed there were some hints earlier that made themselves clear but had been brushed off lol

The narrators of this beautiful babbling brook were
Vanessa Edwin and Joe Arden.

I very much enjoy listening to both of them.

Joe does the CUTEST little kid voice on the planet lol and he made the chef at the firehouse Cajun and oooh that is a lovely drawl 😍

Vanessa is an absolute powerhouse in and of herself also. ❤️❤️❤️

A small-town romance with suspense and spice.

***************************
I’ve wanted you for more than I should have. But it’s more than that. You’ve always been more. You own my f%#king soul, and I don’t ever want it back.

***************************

It was great being back in Wolf Gap. I love this community and family Catherine has created. Calder is Hayes from Book 1’s best mate and Hadley is Hayes’s sister. Catherine’s enjoyable blend of contemporary small-town romance and romantic suspense is just what I needed. This is a story about a strong heroine stifled by her family who has loved her hero forever. He’s living a “safe” life looking after his twin girls, keeping her at arm’s length.

Hadley is a “Little Daredevil” with her mountain biking, snowboarding, skateboarding and more. She’s basically who I want to be when I grow up! I loved all the adrenaline sports in this one. We get to see how she fits or rather doesn’t fit into this family of troubled souls. Calder finally realises that reining her in is sucking the life out of her and decides to help her fly free.

I loved the suspense in this one. With a crazed psych0 out to get her, we’re treated to some action, car chases and near misses. The other relationships in this story are well developed too. With siblings, chosen family, friends, and lovers, the whole spectrum is covered. With a decent dose of heat, you can’t go wrong with this one.

Vanessa does a great job of voicing the frustrated Hadley. We see her fierce outer persona and her sad and lonely soul. She really put me in my feels. Fan favourite Joe delivers Calder the father, Calder the protector, Calder the best friend, and Calder the partner in life and love.

Another fantastic story in this series I’m about to binge.

Wow! Fantastic!

Catherine gave me all the feels with Hadley and Calder’s story. Both lived with tragedy in their pasts, and pain in their present. Hadley suffered in silence from her mother’s overbearing protectiveness as a kid and her verbal abuse as an adult. Yes, Catherine took a character she made readers love in Tattered Stars and gave her love a darker side in Falling Embers. Calder lives for his twin daughters that he almost lost in tragedy, and doesn’t have much to give beyond what he lavishes on his girls. Both trust few and with the chasm that lies between them, these once close friends are ships in the night rarely ever connecting even though what they both need is each other.

Calder and Hadley bonded one night in highschool and he became her everything. Then one fateful night, the boy she loved disappeared from her life even though he was still there. Years later, Hadley is still there for him helping him raise his twin daughters as a single dad. She still loves him, but he can’t get past the risks she takes to feel alive and free. But when they respond to an accident and Calder has to save Hadley, everything changes and the fire between them reignites once more.

There are so many things to love about this story. While you feel deeply for how hard Hadley’s life is with her mother, you also love Hadley’s strength. It was wild how even though Calder saw Hadley almost everyday, he didn’t see her pain that was right in front of his face. However, I think sometimes we miss things that are right in front of us and he was very focused on his girls. I loved the friends to lovers aspect of this story and the twist at the end will catch you completely off guard. While Catherine leads you in so many directions with the threats and the sweet love story, you get caught completely off guard by the ending! It was a fantastic read in an amazing series!

Heartbreaking. Emotional. Beautiful.

Another wonderful story from Catherine Cowles.

I absolutely adore Calder and Hadley. And of course, Calder’s twin daughters. This was such a wonderful story, but it had some heartbreaking and emotional moments along with the romance, drama and suspense. It was so good, I didn’t want it to end.

This story was narrated beautifully by Vanessa Edwin and Joe Arden. Both narrator’s did a wonderful job in bringing the characters to life. Brilliant narration by both.

Wonderful Book

Falling Embers is book 2 in the Tattered and Torn series. This story focuses on Hadley and Calder. Hadley and Calder had a close bond during childhood but during adulthood they drifted apart. Hadley has overcome so much, a fiercely independent woman who excels at her job. Calder a single dad of twins, who is a firefighter what more could you ask for.
This book has all the feels, romance, drama, suspense, emotions. Fantastic 5 star read!

Amazing book

Oh my! What an emotional and heartbreaking story. This book had it all. Drama, suspense and intrigue. I wasn’t sure what Hadley and Calder’s backstory was and I couldn’t have guessed it if I’d tried. It was definitely different than I expected but in a great way. The friendship that turned to love altho neither knew, was magical. I adored the twins! The supporting cast as always was great. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen the book took another turn to keep you guessing. Wonderfully written with heart and lots of love. I’m so excited for the next book now. I can’t wait to see what extraordinary storyline Ms Cowles will deliver next. Each book this author writes is suspenseful and also a wonderful love story. The narration was spot on too. I think it enhances my experience of the story immensely. Wonderful narration

I loved this sweet and swoony romance

I loved this sweet and swoony romance. The story is the second standalone in the Tattered and Torn series.

Hadley is a bit of an adrenaline junkie which drives her mom crazy. Both her mom and Calder seem to want to keep her in a bubble and protected from any chance of danger.

“You deserve better. Someone who appreciates you for who you are and doesn’t try to force you to be someone you’re not.”

Calder is fighting his own demons and only wants to keep the people in his life safe. He has been holding Hadley at a distance, keeping her in the friend zone.

“It seemed as if a force born of the two of us carried me to him, a creation that would only ever be ours. My hands found his, and all felt right in the world.”

Falling Embers combines suspense, mystery, second chance swoony romance, a smokin’ hot firefighter single dad of two cute kiddos, and an emotional storyline that will pull you right in and won’t let go.

“I’ve loved you forever.”
His eyes glistened with unshed tears. “Always have, always will.”

I listened to most of this book on audio and the awesome narration only added another dimension to an already wonderful story.

Breathtakingly beautiful small-town romance

Okay, so I’m embarrassed to admit that until this title I had never read/listened to a Catherine Cowles book and oh my goodness, I’ve been missing an absolute treat! I’m looking forward to getting lost in more small-town romances from this fabulous author.
Falling Embers is book two in the Tattered and Torn series and is the story of Hadley Easton and Calder Cruz.
My heart broke for sweet Hadley and all she endured throughout this story. She suffered the most out of her siblings because of her sisters kidnapping years earlier. Hadley has been prevented from experiencing life due to her family’s irrational fear. Hadley was unable to be who she truly is and live her life to its fullest potential without repercussions. The only person who saw her and her needs was Calder, her brother’s best friend. He showed her how to live, how to feel and how to chase the stars and the high of an adrenaline rush. He gave her an outlet to forget the cruel words thrown at her by a woman who should love her unconditionally but has put restrictions on that love. However, tragedy struck, and Calder’s world almost came crashing down around him which caused him to abandon Hads and anything that can remotely be seen as a little dangerous.
Calder is a hero firefighter and single father to twin girls Birdie and Sage. Due to an accident years previous that almost cost him his precious daughters, Calder has sole custody of the twins and even though he backs aways from Hads, she loves the girls so helps out and has a fantastic relationship with them. Calder begins to see Hads in a new light when she risks her life to save an accident victim as part of her job as an EMT and Calder in turn then had to rescue her.
The amazingly talented Joe Arden and Vanessa Edwin narrate this phenomenal book. Mr Arden has a way of performing the raw, gritty characters that have you feeling every emotion, plus no one holds a candle to him when it comes to children’s voices, they are just incredible. Ms Edwin truly is remarkable at her craft. I felt everything Hads was feeling. Vanessa portrayed her vulnerabilities, her need to not let her family down but also her wants and desires to be free and chase that high.
Ms Cowles is an incredibly talented writer who has a way of making her readers fully immerse themselves in the story, feel everything and have you on the edge of your seat in suspense, I was captivated from start to finish. I couldn’t have loved this anymore and am now looking forward to sweet Addies story in book three of this series.

Amazing Audio Adaptation

The second book in Catherine Cowles Tattered & Torn series, Falling Embers is another amazing friends to lovers, romantic suspense novel that swept me away from the opening chapter. Top marks to Joe Arden and Vanessa Edwin for doing such a fantastic job giving voice to Cruz and Hadley. They managed to imbue all the emotions of the story into the characters while slipping seamlessly between the male/female parts. Thank you for sweeping this listener away from her daily work commute to the scenic mountain town of Wolf Gap where danger lurks beneath the surface for Hadley just as she finally finds happiness with the only man she has ever loved.

I love this series.

I am absolutely loving the Tattered & Torn series Catherine has given us so far.

I had the opportunity to listen to the audio book, which I did in tandem with the read, Jo Arden and Vanessa Edwin did a fantastic job.

Falling Embers just ramped the series up with this heartbreakingly beautiful story, it was full of twists and turns throughout!

Catherine knows how to reel us in, I was already on the edge for this paring after Tattered Stars, there was chemistry flowing off them, but we had no idea what their back story was. Catherine gave them a good one. Plus I friggin love Birdie and Sage.

Yet again what’s not to love, all bases covered for me, romance, heartbreak, angst, plot twists and turns, and a HEA!

I didn’t want this to end such a good read.

Shiloh & Caldor!

Every time. That is how many times Catherine Cowles draws me into her worlds and keeps me captivated. This story is an easy one to fall into. Single dad of twins, firefighter, yes, I am in! But it's not just the hero that pulls me. It's the stories. Hadley has had it tough. After her sister Shiloh's kidnapping, her parents began smothering her. That is until her brother's best friend, Caldor showed her how to blow off steam. And the adrenaline junkie was born. She and Caldor share a mutual attraction, but he's her brother's best friend. There are boundaries. Until danger shakes some sense into Caldor. Now with threats coming in through her Instagram account, and her mothers incessant abuse regarding her dangerous life, Hadley is at her wits end. Will she and Caldor find their happily ever after? Cowles gives us so much in this story. From Hadley's childhood to the present, friends and adventures, to Caldor's heartache, fear and protectiveness with his own kids. It's full of realistic family problems and current relevant issues including that of social media. I love the way it has just the right amount of angst, a thrilling suspenseful plot and a love story to boot! It's a wonderful listen.

And to make it even better, Joe Arden and Vanessa Edwin bring it all to life! This team is so good! Arden plays the broody Caldor, with his impossibly warm heart. He can make us feel it all just with an inflection! Edwin gives us Hadley, spunky, adventurous and full of love. Each scene is genuine, from parent voices to kids, we are treated to an amazing performance.

Falling Embers

This book is emotional, and sweet and all the things a good romance book should be. I really enjoyed it!
