Chastity Jeffries and Xavier King come from very different backgrounds, though they have one thing in common: they’re both living with family secrets. Chastity is the only child of a prominent pastor and has been raised with privilege, but her father’s testimony as a philanderer and her mom’s role as dutiful wife have tainted her view of love. Xavier never knew his father, and his mother abandoned him. His grandmother raised him in a household built on cruelty and violence instead of love and acceptance, instilling in him a fear of abandonment and an enormous sense of insecurity.

Story
Eric Jerome Dickey strides boldly over the minefield that is modern marriage. The central couple's biggest challenge is timing: He works days; she works nights. Instead of growing together, they're rapidly drifting apart, coexisting on stolen phone calls from work, punctuated by occasional bedroom encounters that leave them both feeling even emptier and more alone. When she finds out about his affair - and starts her own - the delicate fabric of their marriage is torn irrevocably asunder. Or is it?

This was an amazing book!

Publisher's Summary
Growing up poor in Texas, Vera Lomax used every gold-digging trick in the book to land a rich husband. Now living in the lap of luxury in San Francisco, her only job is to fawn over her much-older husband, so it's been easy for her to balance a life of shopping and affairs with younger men with a major secret: the 16-year bribery of one of her husband's mistresses to keep her pregnancy under wraps. Vera figures that a little hush money every month will ensure her husband's fortune is hers alone.... Unfortunately for Vera, Sarah Cooper is the child Kenneth Lomax always wanted. When the father she never knew shows up at her mother's funeral to claim her, it's a fairy tale journey from the ghetto to a mansion on a hill. But Sarah's life is not as carefree as her father wants it to be...because Sarah knows from the start that her step-mother is as two-faced as they come. And after losing all the family she's ever known, she wants a life that's richer than what Vera's got planned for her.
Neither woman can be sure who will win Kenneth's heart and fortune. But as Vera and Sarah scheme to get what they want, everyone they know will be choosing sides, taking chances, and gambling it all to come out on top....

Antiquated vernacular
Some books by the author are really good and due to the time period the vernacular is warranted. I don't understand why the author insists on using the same verbiage/vernacular in every book. It takes away from the storyline and the authenticity of the characters. There is no 19 year old or savy and intelligent middle aged person in the 20th century using slave like lingo or backwoods terms.

I didn't like it.
It's rare that I don't like a book, but I didn't like this one. I thought it would get better but it never did. The story was not well developed. There were lots of missed opportunities for this to be a good story. Overall it was unrealistic. It was a drawn out plot for no reason. The characters talked about the same things over and over in each chapter. The dialogue was awkward and none of the characters were likeable. On a positive note, I feel like Patricia Floyd's performance was good. I'm disappointed with this one.

She knocked it Out the Park
This literary art work is classic Mary Monroe, with the high energy vivid characters. Within this book it is plenty rags to riches stories, chocked full of drama. Some of the characters are so0 naive, but it’s so well written it’s believable. I thought the daddy character was going to run out of money. It is taking everything in me not to spoil it, so I will stop now. 2 thumbs up. If you are a fan – you will love it. If this is your 1st MM book, you will be a fan. Great read.

too slow
Is there anything you would change about this book?
It could have been shortened by about 30 chapters
Would you recommend Family of Lies to your friends? Why or why not?
No, it moved way too slow. The characters were weak except for Vera.
What three words best describe Patricia R. Floyd’s performance?
Believable, bitchy snob
Do you think Family of Lies needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
no
Any additional comments?
The plot was good, but I found the characters to be slow and the conclusion to be lacking

It was OK
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It was ok overall. The story was not that believable to me either.
Would you be willing to try another book from Mary Monroe? Why or why not?
No
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narrator who read Kenneth's voice was terrible. He paused in the most unlikely places.
Could you see Family of Lies being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No

I didn't expect any less from Mary Monroe
What made the experience of listening to Family of Lies the most enjoyable?
I enjoyed how the story unraveled. There were touches of foreshadowing here and there that gave the story a hint of suspense. The characters were very human...sometimes even comical.
