We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Publisher's Summary
As the only child in an upper-middle class family, Rowan has had it easy. Doted on by a mother who never wanted anything but a child to love, she's never wanted for anything. Kiaya’s life, however, has been anything but easy. Parents who didn’t want her, followed by being torn away from her only sibling by the foster care system, she knows what it means to have to work hard for the things she wants.
When a deadly virus sweeps the country, Rowan and Kiaya are away at college and far from everything they love. Desperate to make it home, they team up, but as the world around them dies, an unexpected detour leaves them stranded in Vega, Texas where they make a shocking discovery. The virus isn’t just killing people. It’s changing them.
When former cop, Devon, sweeps in to save the day, it looks like their luck has shifted. With hundreds of miles left to cross and the dead taking over, the trio is determined to do whatever it takes to get home. Traveling historic Route 66, Rowan, Kiaya, and Devon fight for survival as they struggle to come to terms with their changing world.
Written in the tradition of the Amazon best-selling Broken World series, Far From Home follows a group of survivors through a zombie infested country as they search for safety, all the while growing and changing with the world around them.

Amazing book, robotic narration
“Far From Home” by Kate L. Mary is one of my favorite post apocalyptic books with its perfect pacing, nonstop action, and the beginnings of interesting character development. I discovered this book a few months ago on Kindle, and read it twice while seriously checking every single day in hopes it would be released as an audiobook. I love this story so much, which focuses on a group of strangers banding together as the virus ravages the country, and then doing their best to understand what's happening when the dead begin to walk. I was flooded with joy when this book made it to Audible, but Nicole Jones’s stilted and robotic narration made it very difficult for me to focus on the riveting plot. I have never in my life written a negative review of a narrator, and only do so now to encourage you to do your best to focus on this fabulous story instead of on the flat narration. “Far From Safe” will be released in August, and though it causes me physical pain to belittle the work of a voice actor, I implore those who have the power to do so to choose a different narrator so the story isn’t overshadowed by the lackluster delivery.

The little train that could!
Kate Mary is one of my favorite post-apocalypse authors. It troubles me to give her less than a stellar review but the narrator chosen for this series is detracting from the overall experience. Ms. Jones’s reading was monotone and emotionless for the most part. I was used to it by the end of the book but that’s still no endorsement. Rowan left much to be desired as well, although her background supported this feeling. She appeared naïve and whiny, not the strong female lead I expected from Kate Mary. Devon is egotistical, Kiaya is an introvert, while Miller is a douchebag. Not the group of characters I was expecting. Perhaps this will turn into a learning experience for all of us. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Far from Home (Far #1) was a good read by Kate L. Mary. Rowan has had an easy life as the only child in an upper middle class family. Kiaya's life was difficult with parents who didn't want her. She was then torn away from her only sibling due to the foster care system. Rowan and Kiaya are away at college when a deadly virus sweeps the country. Another fun zombie adventure!
The narration was okay; her voice fit the characters well, and she gave a quality performance. I just wanted a bit more emotion to her voice at times. Still a good listen.
I really enjoy some zombie/post-apocalyptic adventures, so I liked that aspect. The action is fun to read about. Rowan and Kiaya both go to the same college, when things start going crazy in the world; the whole zombie thing, they decide to team up to get home. Along the way, they find many dangers, but also, some help. It’s a wild adventure through zombie land! I enjoyed all the characters; there are some annoyances with their lack of common sense, but they are interesting. There’s room to grow for them, so I hope to see them mature as the series goes on. Overall, I’m excited to see how these characters fare well. Fun zombie adventure!

The narration is fine..
I put off listening to this audiobook for months because of the bad reviews of the narrator.. The sample clip kind of made the reviews seem legit. However, I thought the narration was fine. It’s also a great story; just as I expected from a Kate L Mary book.

Good story, meh to narration...
Far from Home (Far Series, Book 1) by Kate L. Mary and narrated by Nicole Jones is a good start to a new series- looking forward to where it goes. 4 stars for story, 3 for narration.
What’s it about? At the beginning of the outbreak, Rowan and Kiaya are trying to make their way home but end up in a small town and meet up with Devon. From there, it’s life or death as they move (or not move) through the newly infested zombie world. They meet some new folks along the way (some good, some not so good). Love that it ties into Agnus’s world. Yes the characters do some not-so-wise things at times but it’s the beginning of the outbreak and the full dangers aren’t known yet.
The narrator, Nicole Jones, was ok. Sometimes there was a lack of emotions and monotone. With that being said, she has potential to become a great narrator, but needs a bit more practice.
I recommend this is you are a fan of Kate’s work or are looking for a new zompoc series.

Life is complicated...then. Zombies...
I received this book via a promo code and this is my voluntary review.
Book 1 of this branch in the Broken World universe (I do recommend starting from Broken World->Silent World.. followed by Alone then the Oklahoma Wasteland Series 1-2 <leave book 3 until after Twisted Fate to avoid spoilers> and Broken World Stories Novellas then Twisted World-Twisted Fate) There are some other short love stories dotted around in different time lines which are nice to enjoy afterwards.
This book follows another group of survivors at the start of the viral outbreak as they travel down Route 66 just like Vivian, Axel, Angus and the rest of Team James. Phoenix University, in Arizona is where Rowan is trying to make her way home from college back to OHIO, She's joined by fellow travellers Kyle and Kiaya, because there's safety in numbers and a lot of desperate people trying to flee the infected areas. Rumors about the true nature of the virus and YouTube videos of potential dead walking around. Given the chaos caused by Covid and Lockdowns, the fuel shortages and chaos the characters face is very familiar.
Okay not so much the Martial Law and road blocks and requiring official papers to travel but it IS only August... plenty of time for that yet. People aren't exactly dying in the streets and schools havent been set up as emergency clinics... but I'm still waiting on the Alien Invasion portion of this year to ruin Christmas.
It's barely a day into their journey when Kyle gets exposed to a sick woman in a pit stop diner and they end up having to stop to deal with his fever. They stay with him until the very end... iit's here we see the Cameo from Angus, Trey and Pavarty... I'm assuming this is the same rat motel where Vivian has Strep. Rowan even ends up tagged as Blondie number 2. Gets the low down from Joshua in the shop and gets a Come to Jesus Prepare for the End nudge from Angus.
Kyle ends up dying and its lucky for them that Devon, a local cop is nearby to help them deal with the zombie threat. Kiaya is travelling to get her younger sister and get someplace safe, and Rowan isnt as used to having to fend for herself as Kiaya who spent time in the foster system.
I won't give out too many spoilers but its awesome!

A gripping, riveting read!
This book caught my attention right from the start, the characters and story completely enthralled me. I didn't think I would like Rowan much but it wasn't long until I was soon wrapped up in Rowan & Kaia's partnership and appreciating how they complimented each other. I'm still shocked at the ending, but can't wait for book 2, I really enjoyed Nicole Jones's narration.

Fantastic!
Loved it!!! I love the unfold from the 1st re-animation, the 1st time a zombie is seen... The shock, the disbelief. I really enjoy a storyline that takes me from illness to death and all the way out to the calming of the story somewhat. Where they can take a breather and take stock. This book delivers that high drama and nail biting moments. You never know who's going to get ill, bitten, turn or die!!! Excellent 1st book and fantastic narration. Hurry up book 2!!!
